May Pag-asa sa Pagbasa: A Library Corner for High School Students

For this school year 2020-2021, the educational system was greatly hit by the ill effects
of the global pandemic, COVID-19. Issues being faced by students affecting their academic
performance increase as they adapt to the “new normal” in education. Some learners both from
primary, secondary and tertiary levels have limited ICT resources and limited or no
connectivity at all.

To make instructional materials accessible to every child studying at an urban school in

Lucena City, Lucena Dalahican National High School and Rotaract Club of Lucena South
aspired to set up a library corner, which will be composed of fiction and non-fiction books as
they will provide them knowledge necessary in learning under flexible learning as an approach.

This project named “May Pag-asa sa Pagbasa” was created to address the individual
needs of pupils with limited resources and differing circumstances based on the current
conditions in their community. Just like other schools, fighting illiteracy is the primary
movement of educators of Lucena Dalahican National High School. As they do believe that lack
of access to books is a key-contributor to educational disadvantage, the school administration set
its partnership for a school library with Rotaract Club of Lucena South. Additionally, some of
the books that were given were donated by Rotary Tasmania, Australia and Rotary Club of
Lucena South.

Aside from the reading materials handed over to LDNHS, bookshelves were also
received personally by the school principal, school librarian and teachers. The bookshelves,
meanwhile, were donated by other Rotaract clubs (Rotaract Club of Carmona, Rotaract Club of
Manila Metro, Rotaract Club of Balintawak, Rotaract Club of Cavinti, Rotaract Club of San
Pedro South, Rotaract Club of Malvar, Rotaract Club of Downtown Ibaan, Rotaract Club of San
Pascual, Rotaract Club of Bauan, Rotaract Club of Maryhill College, Rotaract Club of Legazpi,
Rotaract Club of Legazpi Central, Rotaract Club of Daet North, Rotaract Club of Metro
Sorsogon, and Rotaract Club of Virac).

Carmen H. Macatugob, the school principal, extended her gratitude to Rotarians and
Rotaractors for being their stakeholder.
