First Voyage around the World Assignment

1. What was the purpose of the voyage of Magellan?

The purpose of the Voyage of Magellan is to find fame and fortune, and a way to go to West
using the route East going to Spice Islands to conduct trading. Because it is what he proposed to
the King and Queen of Spain. Then he became the first one to cross The Pacific Ocean for
around 99 days.

2. What were the reasons for their stay on the island?

The aim of Magellan's stay on Spice Island was to conduct spice trade. Furthermore, they
intended to broaden the economy's base. By playing with new and different spices Magellan's
long journey came to an end with the discovery of Spice Island. However, it was discovered that
during his round-the-world journey, he had become obsessed with spreading Christianity.

3. How did Pigafetta describe the natives of the island?

Locals such as Rajah Humabon and his wife Juana, according to Pigafetta, greeted Magellan and
his crew with open arms. In exchange for allowing some of the Rajah's followers to be baptized
as Christians, Magellan, or one of his crew members were able to cure the Rajah's ill grandson.
He was seen with friendly people who had a smile on their faces as they arrived on the island.
However, not all of the locals were friendly, and Magellan was killed in a fight by the
subordinates of Lapu-Lapu and since Lapu-Lapu is the chief, the credits go to him.
4. What were the traditions or way of living of the natives as observed by the travelers?

The travelers noticed the natives' customs, which were that the natives are welcoming to
visitors to their island. They were gracious enough to sell the travelers fish, a vessel of palm
wine, figs, and other smaller and better taste of fruits, as well as two cochos. They make a hole
at the top of the tree, as far as its root, from which a liquor falls out and cascades down the tree
in their way of life, such as making palm wines. They also have caned the size of legs that they
use to suck the liquor from and hold fastened to the tree from night to morning.

5. What were the cultural practices imparted by Magellan’s group/Spaniards to the natives?

The natives have gained a large amount of education as a result of Magellan's arrival. He
passed on a lot of stuff, like Christianity. The exchange of information and Spices for gold and
other types of jewels have caused a shift in the market, how people dress, specifically how they
style themselves in dresses. Magellan was a sailor who’s also carried cuisines for the locals to
learn about new dishes. They also explained the importance of holidays.

6. How did Magellan’s companions treat the natives?

They arrive and have a misfortunate experience. For a while, Magellan treated the natives well,
but the natives did something to Magellan and his crew or some misunderstanding. They also
did not get acquainted with them. As a result, a dispute erupted between the natives and
Magellan together with his associates. So, Magellan and his crew fought back against the
natives burned their houses because of what the natives had done to them.
