400 years ago - Yoyo


The people of the Philippines employed the yoyo as a
war weapon against Spaniards and intruders 400 years
ago. The original "yoyo" was quite huge and had sharp
edges as well as studs. This toy is now mass-produced
and well-known all over the world

1931 - Quic Ink


Quink Ink is one of the most popular fountain pen inks
on the market. Developed to operate with Parker Pens
by Filipino scientist Francisco Quisumbing in 1931. It's
water-resistant, won't clog the pen's aperture, and
won't blot or fade.

1941 - Medical Incubator


Fe del Mundo is the first Asian to be accepted into Harvard University's elite
School of Medicine in 1941. She is credited with developing the incubator
and jaundice-relieving device as a result of her research. Two native
washing baskets were stacked inside each other to create this improvised
incubator.

1942 - Banana Catsup


Maria Orosa y Ylagan, a culinary technologist,
invented Banana Catsup in 1942. She is credited with
developing the first banana catsup recipe, according
to legend.

1953, Jeepney
The Filipinos built their own version of the "jeepney"
after the Americans colonized the Philippines. Since
then, this truck has been spotted on nearly every
street and road in the country contributed to the
framing of the jeepney as a Philippine cultural icon.
1949 - Erythromycin
The microorganism Streptomyces erythreus produces
the antibiotic erythromycin. It's widely used to treat
acne and remove pimples. In 1949, Abelardo Aguilar
used dirt from his home province to discover this strain.

1949 - Patis
Patis, or Fish Sauce, is a salty condiment used in a
variety of Filipino recipes. It was discovered by
accident in 1949 by Ruperta David (aka Aling Tentay).

1981- 16-Bit Microchip


Fe del Mundo is the first Asian to be accepted into Harvard

2000 - Mole Remover


Rolando dela Cruz devised a method for removing moles or warts
from the skin that were deeply embedded. The recipe was made
with cashew nut extracts (Annacardium occidentale). This recipe
won a gold medal at the International Invention, Innovation,
Industrial Design, and Technology Exhibition in 2000.

2005 - Anticancer Cream


Rolando dela Cruz took home the gold award for
developing a cancer-fighting cream on 2005. Cashew nuts
and other indigenous plants were used to create it. It is
used to treat basal skin carcinoma (BSC), the most
common kind of skin cancer.
