Monday May 4 Assignment.

Calorimetry can be used to determine the amount of energy in food. Water is heated in a Calorimeter when food is burned
inside the reaction chamber. You can figure out the energy in the food by calculating the energy change in the water. The
energy is transferred between the reaction chamber and the water.
A peanut is burned in a calorimeter that contains 200.501 g of water. The initial temperature of the water was 21.2°C and
changed to 36.9°C after the peanut burned. The peanut had a mass of 0.725 g. How many Cal/g does the peanut contain?
NOTE: If you are not sure how to get the greek letter delta, you can just copy it from here: ∆

How much energy is absorbed if 200.5 g of water changes from 21.2°C to 39.7°C? Use the
specific heat in calories.
List Variables Equations and Set up:
Temperature Equation: ∆T= Tf - Ti

Set up Equation: ∆T= 39.7°C - 21.2°C

Ans: 18.5°C

Energy Equation: q= m C ∆T

Set up Equation: q= (200.5 g) (1.00 cal/g °C) (18.5 °C)

Final Answer 3,709.3 cal

Answer the following questions about the peanut burned. Answer:

How much energy was released by the peanut? (in calories) 3709.3 cal

Convert the peanut energy into Calories Answer:

Set up Equation: 3709.3 cal ( 1 Cal / 1000 cal)
3.7093 Cal

If the peanut had a mass of 0.625 g, calculate the Calories per gram in the
Answer:
peanut.
Set up Equation: 3.7093 Cal / 0.625 g
5.935 Cal/g

You eat a one ounce (28.0 g) package of peanuts. How many Calories did
Answer:
you eat?
Set up Equation: 28.0 g ( 5.935 Cal/g )
166.18 Cal
