It is widely believed today that the globalization of culture will lead to greater global

understanding. It will make people aware of difference, lead to rich cultural intermixing, and
might even reduce the likelihood of cultural misunderstanding and conflict. Globalization has
propagated economic opportunity, elevated human rights and improved access to information,
technology and goods for people all over the world. Critics argue that these benefits have come
at a steep price: the sacrificing of regional cultural identity for Western ideals. Globalization can
affect culture in a few basic ways. Though often thought of as a modern concept, the processes
of cultural globalization can be traced back through most of history. Even during times when
most societies tended to exist in relative isolation, international trade and exploration often led to
transformative exchanges of ideas. In addition to cataloging the influences of globalization on
culture, students of this phenomenon should ask to what extent the effects on culture are negative
or positive, and why they are happening. The mechanisms of cultural globalization are numerous
and come from different sources. Thinking about globalization in the broadest possible terms,
there are three principal ways that globalization can be seen to have an impact on global culture.
These occur through:1. the development of a new culture of the globally connected professionals
and especially business elites and the proliferation of pop culture. The impact of globalization on
culture may also be seen as a blend of the heterogeneous and homogenous, or a "glocalization"
of sorts. Glocalization can be understood as the development of hybrid cultures at the local level,
as foreign cultures reach local soil, such as in the creation of fusion cuisine or music.

Globalization is seen as the intermixing of people, cultures, economies and technologies. Modem
cultural globalization is a new phenomenon. It started with economic globalization—spread of
transnational corporations and global commodities. In this way, we are all sharing in a common
transnational form of consumption. This developing consumerism has encouraged mass common
consumer culture which reflects a powerful grip on societies throughout the world. As
consumerism spreads, changes are visible in lifestyles, cultural tastes, food habits, dress patterns
and in modes of entertainment also. In spreading cultural globalization, technology has played a
crucial role. Technology, in reality, has shrunk the world in our palm. Revolutions in electronic
communication and rapid means of transportation have produced an indelible impact on local,
regional and national cultures because these means can now reach swiftly even the remotest
corner of any country.
