When no external force acts on the system, the centre of mass of the double
star moves like a free particle. The orbits of the two stars are slightly
complicated, but combination of two motions:
a) The uniform motion of the centre of mass CM in a straight line and,
b) The circular orbits of the two stars around their CM. However, the two
stars always remain on the opposite sides of the CM.
c)
ii. EARTH MOON SYSTEM: The moon moves around the earth in a circular
orbit and the earth moves around the sun in an elliptical orbit. The CM of the
earth – moon system moves around the sun in an elliptical orbit.
7) OTHER EXAMPLE OF THE CM MOTION: Fire cracker moves along a
parabolic path. Each fragment will follow its parabolic path.
8) RIGID BODIES AND ITS CENTRE OF MASS:
RIGID BODY: a body is said to be rigid if it does not undergo any change in its size
and shape, however large the external force may be acting on it. More appropriately, a
rigid body is one whose constituent particles retain their relative positions even when
they move under the action of an external force.

Where, ω = final angular velocity
+, = initial angular velocity
α = angular acceleration
. = angular displacement
11) MOMENT OF FORCE OR TORQUE
F= ×
Where, τ= torque
r = perpendicular distance
F = applied force
12) PRINCIPLE OF MOMENTS: When a body is in rotational equilibrium, the sum
of the clockwise moments about any point is equal to the sum of the anticlockwise
moments about that point or the algebraic sum of moments about any point is zero.
