What This Guide Will Show You & Why

You Need To Read It NOW
By the end of this course, you will know how to make a lucrative ongoing income
from the Etsy marketplace. You'll learn how to make short term CASH while
building an even more profitable long term business! With this guide, you're in
on the ground floor...well actually BETTER than the ground floor...you're in the
lobby, on the elevator, and on your way UP!

What do I mean by this? Simply that NOW is the perfect time for you to get into
the Etsy business! Etsy has been around for a few years now and has a strong
following BUT it is still new enough to have plenty of opportunity!

Basically you can think of Etsy as a popular online marketplace where art buyers,
craft buyers, and vintage collectors come together with sellers of same. Art
pieces, crafts, craft supplies, and vintage collectables are sold through “fixed price
listings”. Sellers also get to set up their own Etsy stores (easy to do) to attract
more buyers, and encourage multiple item orders. 'Social sharing' of listings is
also encouraged on the Etsy site, which can hugely increase your sales & profits!

Etsy is an 'open' marketplace that allows buyers to give feedback ratings that are
made public. As we shall see, Etsy's built in 'social sharing' (when tapped into
properly) allows sellers to boost their traffic (and sales!).

This newbie friendly guide shows you everything you need to know from “A to Z”
to start and run a highly profitable Etsy store chalk full of highly popular unique
products! And NOW is the time to get started! Don't ignore this guide and be
kicking yourself 3-5 years down the line at a 'missed' opportunity.

Take action today while Etsy's high earnings marketplace is still wide open!
Establish yourself NOW while it's still relatively easy to do!

7
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

In this guide, you'll learn the insider secrets to...

1) Finding tons of amazingly profitable product niches on Etsy
2) Finding lots of “hot” high demand products to offer in your Etsy Listings
3) Setting up your own “uniquely themed” professional & attractive Etsy Store
4) Creating awesome offers that Etsy buyers will find irresistible
5) Promoting your listings for free (both within Etsy itself and also by using
Email and/or Facebook)
6) Getting multiple sales, repeat sales, and more money per sale
7) Virtually eliminating refunds and boosting your positive feedback ratings
through the stratosphere
8) Using email to build a customer list you can sell to again and again
9) Grow your business to any “size” you wish

And much more....

Why Etsy Produces Higher Profits With Less Work:

When most marketers first look at Etsy, they tend to evaluate it in comparison to
Ebay. This is a mistake. Etsy can be very profitable. But it's a different kind of
animal than Ebay. Etsy has different demographics, and its buyers have a
somewhat different psychology.

As we shall see, by tapping into Etsy's unique demographics and buyer

psychology, we can make substantial profits in short order and do so much more
easily and quickly than in most any other venue!

Also, UNLIKE Ebay, Etsy offers products in only three (3) major categories...
1) Handmade Art (or Crafts)
2) Vintage Items (over 20 years old)
3) Art/Craft supplies

Etsy is a very newbie friendly site, and offers lots of online help and support for
its sellers and buyers alike. Etsy, unlike Ebay (which in my opinion tends to
discriminate against new sellers), makes it easy for new Etsy sellers to enter the
marketplace profitably.

So why do some sellers on Etsy make few or zero sales where others make
thousands of sales?? ...Research! (plus this guide!!).

8
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Here are some common causes of low to zero sales (which this guide will
show you how to avoid!)....

– Choosing the wrong niche

– Choosing the wrong products
– Trying to appeal to the wrong demographic
– Amateurish looking Etsy store
– Creating listings that fail to inspire or persuade
– Failing to differentiate oneself from other sellers and/or NO cohesive theme
– Failing to promote store/listings off site (promoting 'off site' is very
important and also simple to do!)

Here are some major advantages of using Etsy to make money...

– Lots of buyer traffic – tightly targeted and relatively easy to access.

– Unique demographic – As we shall see, we can use this to our advantage.

– Simple To Set Up – Etsy's site is very user friendly and offers plenty of
online help & support.

– Low competition – Etsy has a strong following but is still quite new!

– Social Aspects – The Etsy website has a number of “social factors” built in
to help sellers bring attention to their store & their listings!

– Level Playing Field – Rules favor new sellers as much as established sellers.

– Listings Attract Organic Traffic – Your Etsy listings may show up in Google
search results bringing you additional free traffic!

– Easy To Promote – Etsy listings lend themselves naturally to free

promotions through Facebook fn pages (easier to do than you think!).

– Flexible Shipping & Pricing Options – Etsy gives you the ability to turn
'single product' sales into “multiple item” sales to hugely boost your profits!

9
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Here are TWO more BIG Etsy advantages.

1) Etsy now let's you sell art pieces or crafts that are created by other people!
This means you can now source (or outsource) your art or craft pieces
instead of making them yourself! As such, Etsy sellers can now spend their
time simply listing, promoting and fulfilling orders, and leave “product
creation/production” to others! (if they so wish). Etsy only stipulates that
the product design or idea originated with the seller.

This guide will also show you how to tap into numerous lucrative “art prints”
niches royalty free too!

2) Etsy now lets you sell DIGITAL art that your customers can download
instantly! And, Etsy lets you host these digital products right on their
website! This way, you DON'T have to build your own download pages or
any of that cumbersome stuff!

This means you have NO shipping costs, NO running to the post office, NO
“physical inventory” taking up space, etc. Just list, promote, & profit!

That said, I always recommend “diversification” on Etsy. If you decide to

tap into Etsy's “digital” markets, you may well still want to sell “physical
products” too! This gives you added credibility, lets you access a much
wider market, and has other advantages as we shall see.

What does it cost to sell on Etsy?

Another advantage to using Etsy to sell is its very low costs. Joining Etsy is FREE.
Setting up an Etsy store is also FREE.

Listings cost just $0.20 (20 cents) each [at the time of this writing] and the
listing remains up for a full 4 months (or until the item(s) are sold). After 4
months, (if you still have items left) you can renew your listing(s) for another 4
months (for just another 20 cents). You have the option of canceling a listing
anytime.

So suppose you have an Etsy store offering 20 different items with a separate
listing for each item. It would cost you just $4 to list everything and you're good
for 4 months ($1 per month). Normally your items will sell much quicker than
this! In other words, there is a 20 cent fee for creating or renewing a listing on
Etsy. There is no fee for editing a listing.

10
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Here's some MORE good news! If you have multiple quantities of an item listed,
you DON'T need to pay more up front. You'll only be charged 20 cents. The 20
cent listing fee for the remaining items is only charged AFTER each sale! For
example, If you have 36 identical vintage postcards for sale, Etsy only charges
you “upfront” for listing the 1st card (20¢), NOT $7.20 for all the cards. ETSY only
deducts the 20 cent listing fee on each additional card after (and IF) it sells. After
4 months, if there are items remaining, you can renew the listing for just 20
cents. This way you can list multiple items without risking huge listing fees!

No other money or fees are taken until (and only IF) your item(s) sell. Upon each sale,
Etsy takes 5% of the sell price (including shipping) as a sale fee. So say you were
selling your cards for $10 + $1 S&H ($11 total). Then each time one of your vintage
postcards in the example above sold, Etsy would deduct 20 cents listing fee and 55
cents on the sale (5% of $11) = 75 cents. CHEAP!!

Etsy also allows buyers the option of using a wider range of payment methods
from besides just Paypal. ETSY refers to this additional payment option as ETSY
PAYMENTS (formerly known as “direct checkout”). This option allows customers
to pay for their purchase of your items by credit card, debit card, or Etsy gift card
Apple Pay, Android Pay, bank transfers, etc. Etsy takes care of all the payment
processing for you & deposits payments directly into your bank account (deposits
are delayed 5-8 days depending on your sales history).

All ETSY Sellers must now include the ETSY PAYMENTS option(s) for all of their
customers. If the customer selects an ETSY PAYMENTS option, ETSY takes care of
everything but charges an additional cheap nominal fee that varies by country. In
the US a flat fee of 25 cents plus 5% of the total sale (including S&H) is
charged. WELL WORTH IT FOR THE ADDED SALES!! Etsy has shared internal
stats showing that shops with ETSY PAYMENTS see 49% higher sales on average.

So let’s say we sold a vintage postcard for $10 + $1 S&H and the customer used Etsy
Payments. Using USA fees as an example, ETSY would charge you the following. 20
cent listing fee, 55 cent sale fee (per above), Etsy Payments fee 58 cents (25 cents
plus 3% of sale + shipping = 25 cents + 3% x $11 = 25 cents + 33 cents). Total =
$1.13 CHEAP!! Here are some handy info links to help you out as needed...

Understanding The Psychology Of Etsy Buyers &

What makes Them BUY!

We can get some insight into how to better target and persuade Etsy buyers by
looking at Etsy's demographics (source: SocialMediadd.com ) .

We see right away that TWO THIRDS of Etsy's visitors are women and
over 2/3rds don't have children. A little more than half make MORE THAN 60K per
year and are between 18 and 34 years of age.

This tells us that, all else being equal, we want our products to appeal to young,
upper middle class women. Children's items and men's items are much less suited
to Etsy (at this time). There are exceptions to be sure. This demographic is slowly
changing over time as more and more men (for example) seem to also be
discovering Etsy.

But for now (and especially when just starting out), we want to put the odds
squarely in our favor by not bucking the above demographics. Further, I myself
have listed items, some of which appeal to men and some which appeal to
women, and I have found that sales results bear out the demographics. The vast
majority of my sales are to women with virtually no sales going to men.

We can get further insights by looking at Etsy's stats on Alexa.

12
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Again we are seeing mostly female visitors, and we see that they tend to be fairly
well educated. We also see that the vast majority of Etsy visits (almost 2/3 rds)
come from the United States.

Personally, I always offer worldwide shipping (and recommend that other sellers
do the same to maximize profits) but realize that the vast majority of your sales
will come from within the USA. Again my personal sales bear this out too.

To get a better understanding of the psychology of Etsy buyers, we

consider two things... 1st we consider the Etsy site itself, and second we consider
where most of Etsy's traffic comes from.

13
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

As we shall see (and as mentioned previously), Etsy has a number of on site

social sharing abilities. For example, Etsy allows sellers to acquire “followers” who
can “favorite” items that they like (later in this guide you'll learn how to easily
and efficiently build a list of powerful followers and get many “favorites” to boost
your sales and visibility on Etsy).

So we see that Etsy has a social component that fits hand in glove with it's
commercial function. When sellers efficiently and properly tap into this, their sales
and profits can jump upwards significantly!

Now let's look at where most of Etsy's traffic is coming from. Again from Alexa
we get...

From the above we see that there are some KEY social sites we should be using
to increase our Etsy sales. Etsy visitors tend to be very social! Specifically, we see
that we should be using Facebook to draw additional attention to our Etsy store
and listings since it drives by far the largest share of social traffic to Etsy. By
using FB, we can create a stronger (and continually growing) customer base.

We will also want to optimize our listings to increase the chances of them
appearing in Google's search results.

Don't worry, this is all very simple to do (once you know the secrets). This guide
will cover this in detail. And by the way, when we say we will be using Facebook

14
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

to promote our Etsy store, we're NOT talking about doing so on our “personal”
Facebook page...we will be creating a completely separate “Facebook fan page” to
do this (this looks more professional and also avoids violating Facebook's TOS).

For now, just keep in mind that we will be making use of Facebook to quickly
“ramp up” our Etsy sales. Don't be overwhelmed by this...all the steps are easily
doable and fully outlined in this guide.

Of course, that's down the line...1st we need to plan out and then create our Etsy
store (and fill it with some great products!) BEFORE we get into the detailed steps
on how to do that, let's review an “overview” of everything we will be doing.

Again, don't be overwhelmed...just follow this guide... and also follow your
passion... and everything will fall into place.

Method Overview:
Many people make the mistake of trying to set up an Etsy Store BEFORE they've
adequately researched the market or thought about “branding”. Building 1 st and
“thinking” later is putting the proverbial cart 'before the horse' and will result
more often than not in failure.

This is where this guide will put you ahead of 97% of your competition. Just as
you wouldn't build a “highrise” building without a blueprint, you can't build a
high-profit Etsy business without a blueprint either. This guide IS your
blueprint!

In order to make excellent money on Etsy, you need to lay a foundation (don't
worry...it's simple and doesn't take long to do, but can make ALL the difference).

Here are the steps you'll follow to create your highly profitable presence
on Etsy...
1) Find one, or several profitable niches (easy to do using FREE online tools).

2) Create or source several 'hot' high profit 'products' to offer for sale (this
guide will show you how to get/create products FREE and/or at very low
cost that you can sell at 350%-1850% profit). [You'll even learn how to
buy just one cheap product and turn it into 15-40 separate products
that are highly desired, rare and fetch high prices].

15
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

3) Put some thought into your 'branding' & “store theme” (based on your
research and your passions).

4) Think about your packaging and how to make it creative, attractive, and yet
still low cost and functional (i.e. protects your products from damage &
adds perceived value to your products).

5) Create some simple but stunning graphics using free online tools (your
store will need a header banner, and (optionally) a logo. This differentiates
you from any competition, boosts your buyers' confidence in you, brands
you, and unifies your 'shop theme' (easier than it sounds).

6) Prepare your product photos (again simple to do – many items can just be
'scanned' but even “taking photos” need not be a cumbersome process).
7) NOW we build our Etsy shop! (Including an enticing 'bio' and 'about' page
that will inspire your buyers).

8) Create your listings in a way that makes your products irresistible and also
encourages multiple item sales and repeat sales!

9) Optimize your listing with keywords and tags so they can be found by Etsy
buyers and even Google searchers.

10) Promote your Listings on “key” web 2.0 sites (This guide gives you
complete step by step instructions) to draw in even more buyers!

11) Promote your Etsy store/listings from within Etsy.

12) Create a FB fan page with an email opt-in and also embed our Etsy shop
into our fan page too! Interlink everything into one powerful buyer
recruiting magnet (this can all be done for free – this guide shows you
how!).

Finally, rinse repeat!

– Add more products/listings
– Add more niches
– Build a following for repeat sales (and free additional profits!).
– Grow your business!!!

16
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Each of the above steps is explained in detail below. However, DON'T get bogged
down with details! Rome wasn't built in a day!... Concentrate on getting your
basic Etsy store up 1st. You can refine things later as you go. Realize that even
with a mediocre store, you may well be getting significant sales! (even before
you've completed all of the steps!). If your initial photos are less than stellar, use
them anyways and improve them later. If your descriptions are lacking punch,
polish them later...as long as your “branding” (theme) is consistent (we talk about
this later), everything else is forgivable. Get your virtual doors open!!

A well thought out Etsy store that is themed, branded, enticing, and contains
desirable items for sale will, many times, attract buyers almost all on its own.
Although you always want to complete the steps listed above to grow and
maximize your profits, don't feel you have to implement & perfect everything all
at once. Take an evolutionary approach rather than a revolutionary approach.

The following sections of this guide gives you full details on how to complete each
of the above steps. But you DON'T have to complete “everything” prior to actually
opening your store!

Let's get started!

17
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Section I
Detailed Steps For Building Your Own High
Profit Etsy Store
How To KNOW and PROVE An Etsy Niche Is Making Lots Of
Money BEFORE You Invest Your Time & Effort Into It.
The biggest mistake any Etsy seller can make is to waste time and effort building
and promoting products that are in a non-profitable (or low profit) niche.

This section will show you how to PROVE an Etsy niche is making money BEFORE
you invest your time targeting it. It's simple to do and can be fun too! This
niche research “method” actually takes longer to explain than it does to actually
just do it! Once you get the hang of this, you'll be able to discover dozens, or
even hundreds of “hidden” high profit Etsy niches on the fly!

Here's what to do...

If you don't have an ETSY account, go here and sign up for one now (Don't
worry, you can go back and tweak everything later). Next, go to Etsy and enter a
keyword search phrase (related to a niche that you are interested in) into Etsy's
search bar. This brings up a list of products for sale.

Note: Unlike Ebay, Etsy shows only current listings...past listings are not
accessible. But that's OK!

From the results page, select one, or any number or products that catch your eye
or interest.

Power Seller Tip: To speed things up, you can just “right click” on product
images and select “open in a new tab”. This way you don't lose your original Etsy
results page each time you select a product, and you can open listings very fast!

Many times I'll simply right click and open the 1st half dozen or so listings.

Look at the products & sellers. If you like the product (or even if you don't), click
through to the seller's shop. Every Etsy product listing has a link to the seller's
shop located in the upper right hand side of the listing (where it shows the
number of items the seller has - that number is a link to the seller's shop!) OR
you can just click on the shop name.

18

Note: At this point, don't worry about where YOU will get products to sell...We'll
cover “product sourcing” a bit later.

Once you've clicked through to a seller's shop, look at the “shop info” at the top
where it says, 'number of sales' and 'on Etsy since'. From this, you can
calculate an estimate of the sales per month for the shop!

There is one further thing you can look at... At the top of the left hand side
column, you'll see the title “Shop Sections” which breaks down the seller's
products by sub-categories.

Once you get some specific ideas of what's selling well, you can then repeat the
search process using more specific keyword searches (for products offered by
high selling vendors) and drill down to highly profitable sub-niches and sub-sub-
niches! For example, I went to Etsy and entered the search term “digital print”
and this page of products came up...

I then clicked on a couple of the products...one was the “Blue Abstract Digital
Print” you can see in the bottom-left of middle listing in the above screen shot,

and (scrolling down the page) the other was called “Balloon of love hearts”.

There were literally dozens of interesting products that caught my eye! But let's
go with just these 2 for now in order to illustrate.

TIP: While you are doing this, start a listings “swipe file” - that is, copy and
paste parts of interesting descriptions or groups of words, or product description
outlines or KEYWORDS that may prove useful in your own listing descriptions
later...we never want to “plagiarize” a listing, but we can “rewrite” and “adapt”
good words, phrases and outlines!

Below is a screen shot of the 'Balloon of love hearts' print listing, and below that
is a screen shot of the seller's shop, which, as said, is found by clicking on the
“number of items” in the upper right hand side of the listing OR clicking on the
shop name ('TillyandMaud' at upper left)

We can see from the next screen shot below that this seller has sold 314 prints
since 2015 to present (at the time of this writing). That's, at best, only ~13 sales
per month...not great at all!...I thought this might prove to be a profitable niche
(romantic art) BUT in this instance, this is NOT the case!

20
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

If I keep searching, I may find other sellers in (variations of) this niche who are
more successful but until I do (and only IF I do), I won't touch this niche! I have
saved myself from wasting time and effort going after a low profit niche!

NOW let's take a look at the “Blue Abstract Digital Print” mentioned earlier.

Again we click onto the listing and then go to the seller's store (ref screen shot on
following page).

21
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

In the next screen shot below (following page), we see this seller's store items
broken down by product type.

Under “shop info” we see that this seller has sold 3,704 items in 2017 alone!
That's 370 prints per month! Much better!!

We can learn a lot from this seller. FIRST, we can start to narrow in on more
specific 'popular' products. Scrolling towards the top of the shop page at left, we
look at the “Shop Sections” list.

We see that, this seller offers both physical prints as well as digital prints.

22
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

From the shop sections, we can also start drilling down to sub-niches...We could
now do new searches for “digital aerial photography” or “abstract art prints” or
also “botanical prints” etc., etc. and see what we find. We can also try searching
popular vintage artists too. Such prints are often in the PUBLIC DOMAIN and thus
free to use or sell. We'll have more on this later but for now a quick example... I
searched “digital print Alice In Wonderland”, I found this in the results.

Looking at the seller's shop revealed 34,989 sales from the beginning of 2007.
That comes out to about 300 sales/mo ave over the 9 ½ years this seller's store
has been open. 4 items were priced at $60. The rest ranged from $3.95-$20.00.

23
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Let's say this person averaged just $8 net profit per sale (after Etsy and Paypal
fees and incidental other costs – likely a 'low ball' estimate). That puts this seller,
at $3,200+ per month PROFIT (likely much higher!). This is a niche & seller
worth studying!

We notice that this person offers their digital prints both as instant downloads
AND as sets of prints on CD (CD’s are incredibly cheap to make and ship!).

What if this seller offered physical prints too in addition to the digital prints?

Of course we can't just 'copy' what other sellers are doing... We have to put our
own unique twist & our own personality into “our” Etsy shop (we'll see how to do
this later), but by learning which types of products and offers are selling well, we
greatly increase our chances of success with our own offers!

Here's the KEY... By studying successful sellers in successful niches on Etsy, we

give ourselves a leg up (many legs up actually!!) on our competition! And we
avoid wasting time and effort on 'loser' niches too! And (as we will see very
shortly) there are TONS of easy to acquire products you can easily get your hands
on.

For example, under “digital products” alone we could look at digital copies of
vintage books, vintage photographs, vintage posters, vintage postcards etc. etc.

Of course we should NOT confine ourselves to the “digital” markets

alone! “Digital prints” were used only as one example of many! As we shall see,
it's easy (and cheap!) for us to locate physical prints too (along with many
other products) which are royalty free and salable at high profit WITHOUT
violating copyright (more on this very shortly).

We can look at selling PHYSICAL reprints or PHYSICAL original prints! We can

even look at selling our own (or other people's) current artwork (as originals,
reprints, or digital prints available on CD or available as instant downloads).

We can also consider selling other handmade physical items (made ourselves or
made by others) such as jewelry, clothing, purses and bags, even phone cases!
As said, product creation/sourcing will be covered later in this guide. Just
remember, when searching out profitable niches, don't limit yourself!

That said, I like the “print niches” a lot!!!

Side Note: “Digital Items” Vs “Reprints” Vs “Original Prints”

While we are on the subject of product selection, realize that there are unique
advantages to selling each type of artwork, print or other items listed above as
follows.

“Digital items” generally have the lowest “costs” associated with them and are
easiest to deliver (instant download!). Even if you are offering
digital items on CD, the creation, packaging, and shipping is simple
and quite cheap.

THE BEST THING about digital downloads is you can TOTALLY

AUTOMATE the whole process because ETSY takes care of
everything for you! Etsy HOSTS your downloads for you so
you DO NOT need a website nor tech skills!

Thus, a digital downloads ETSY business is very simple to put

together!

IN FACT, we've created a whole separate course on how to do this

and IN IT WE REVEAL A SECRET HIGH PROFIT PRINT NICHE buyers
CRAVE! Go Here Now to see what this secret high profit niche
is!! or click the banner at left (take notes!).

Digital products (artwork, vintage prints, etc.) generally go for

lower prices than physical items, BUT it's virtually 100% PURE
PROFIT as “product creation” costs you nothing and “fulfillment” is
automatic! The simplicity of “automatic” order fulfillment (via
instant ETSY download) means that digital products provide you a
virtual 'set and forget' method of selling!

You also have the advantage of being able to sell a single print (or
sets of prints) over and over and over again (to infinity). You need
only acquire the print once (which the above course shows you how to do for
FREE!) and you can sell it over and over again...forever! Click Here to see how!

“Physical reprints” have the advantage of a higher perceived value, and thus
you can command somewhat higher prices for them (plus you can offer value
added services like framing or matte framing to increase profits) and like digital
prints, “reprints” can be sold an infinite number of times...just keep making
copies! Of course with physical reprints, you now have to take care of nominal

25
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

printing costs, order fulfillment, and shipping. However the higher profit margins
generally more than justify this effort and order fulfillment can eventually be
outsourced (if you wish). For example you can use Amazon's FBA (Fulfillment By
Amazon) service to ship your Etsy items for you - you can find out more on
Amazon's website anytime.

“Physical ORIGINAL prints” command the highest prices and highest profit per
sale (all else being equal) and thus generally have more profit “margin” than the
former examples above. However, original prints can't be 'reproduced' (or it would
no longer be an original print!!!). As such, original prints can only be sold ONCE.
That said, as we shall see, there are ways to acquire dozens, hundreds and even
thousands of “completely original prints/artwork” at very very low cost, so that
they are more than worthwhile to carry and sell! They can be VERY
LUCRATIVE!

As we shall see, Prints can be sourced (free!) from the public domain, OR at very
low cost from other sources. Current artwork (digital or printed) can be created or
sourced cheaply online.

PERSONALLY, I like the “original prints” market but I recommend Etsy sellers
experiment with all three types of “print” products (original prints, reprints, and
digital prints). In my experience, each Etsy store should sell exclusively in each
print market. BUT there's nothing wrong with having MULTIPLE ETSY shops in
EACH of these three print niches loaded with appealing products from each niche.
This maximizes your sales and profits! That said, you aren't limited to prints! ANY
hand made product you can make is a potential income stream!

The point is (as said, and as we shall see shortly), there are many very low cost
and even FREE product creation/sourcing options available for acquiring TONS of
“hot” Etsy products. You need not feel limited!

Power Seller Tip! When you start to enter a search word or phrase into Etsy's
search bar, Etsy will (like Google) give you suggested search terms in a drop
down box (reference screen shot below).

These “suggestions” represent the most popularly searched variations of keyword

phrases typed in by Etsy users. This can aid you not only in identifying popular
Etsy niches (by seeing what people are searching for) but also help you later to
find popular keyword variations to include in your OWN listing titles, and tags!

26
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Another handy feature is that at the bottom of the KW phrase suggestion list is an
option to “find shop names containing [your KW phrase]” which can be a quick
way to find other sellers in your niche (or in any niche!). Pay attention to these
handy search suggestions and options from Etsy and use them to your
advantage.

Final Notes On Researching Profitable Niches On Etsy:

In concluding, we should realize that there are limitations to the “niche info” that
can be gleaned from reviewing Etsy's website & sellers. As said, unlike Ebay, Etsy
doesn't have an option for accessing “past listings” and only shows current ones.

Also, although we can see the # of sales a seller has, (and their most recent
sales) we don't know their sales volumes for individual items.

But even with these limitations, it is still a simple matter to locate successful
sellers and find hot popular products on Etsy!

In the next section, However, we are going to tremendously “hedge our bets” with
some further “off site” research (using free online resources).

High Profit Niche Research Made Simple

(Using FREE Resources)
Etsy has hundreds (perhaps thousands!) of “hidden” niches and sub-niches that
are highly profitable. As we have seen, we can discover many of these “hot”
niches simply by searching and studying Etsy itself.

Now we want to further “hedge our bets”. In this section we explore how to find
hot Etsy niches & products by searching Ebay! Ebay offers many search options
not available on Etsy.

We will also be using a cool free online tool to help us.

Here's what to do...

Go to Ebay. Navigate to the listings category in your niche (hand made jewelry,
handmade soaps, handmade scarves, handmade handbags, prints, art, deco, etc.
etc.). I like the prints niche, so I'm going to use “art prints” for this example.
So from the Ebay homepage, I would click on 'Collectables & Art' – 'Art' -'Art from
dealers & resellers' – 'Prints'.

If your Etsy niche is different, navigate to the Ebay category most appropriate for
your Etsy niche.

I'm showing my navigation path on Ebay (in red) in the screen shots
above and below on the following page (using the “prints” niche as an
example).

28

Scroll to the bottom and select 'See all items in prints' (ref below).

Then on the left hand side of the page (where there are many search items), I
would select “sold listings only” (to see past sales) and “sorted by most recent

1st ”. I also like to set the “price range” filter to $10-$35 (of course, you may
choose to vary the price range searched if you wish but this is a good starting
point).

NOTE: Since most of our Etsy customers will be coming from within the USA, we
generally want to be searching eBay’s US site ebay.com.

Look at the resulting images and click on any Ebay print listings that catch your
eye or are in the Etsy niche you are (considering) going after (again, right click
and open listings in new tabs). Once on a listing, check out the 'seller's other

listings and see which prints sold well in the past.

Power Seller Tip: Just like you did on Etsy, start a “listings swipe file”,
copying and pasting parts of interesting descriptions or groups of words, or
product description outlines that may prove useful in your own Etsy listing
descriptions later.

Pay particular attention to (and make note of) any prints that are listed
as 'book plates' (as we shall see later, “book plate prints” are relatively
easy to source and can be legally sold, even if copyrighted).

Also make note of any prints you find that are (possibly) in the public domain
(published before 1923 for US) as these are also fairly easy (and free!) to source.

Click on the Ebay seller to see what other items/prints they are selling. You want
to see if items that have sold well in the past, are still selling well...If past items
are re-listed in current listings by the same seller, this is an indication that the
prints are still popular.

Get the print artist's name and use it in your search string (on both Ebay and
Etsy) to refine your searches and also see if the prints are selling well for other
sellers.

Note any and all prints or niches that are selling well!

Next, we will make use of a free online tool to get more specific information on
product sales in our (soon to be created) niche.

Open a new browser tab and go To www.watchcount.com - Copy the eBay

item# from any Ebay listing of interest (ref red circle below)...

Paste the item# into Watchcount's keyword box & click the “What's Most Popular”
button (ref screen shot below).

31
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

This brings you to a page that gives the listing dates (so you can see how long
the item(s) took to actually sell! (ref screen shot on following page).

When you find tightly niched items (or popular artists) that...
1) Appeal to women
2) Are selling well on both Ebay AND Etsy
3) Fit your niche (or fit into a niche you can create)
4) And are commanding sufficient prices ($3-$10 for digital products, $7 or
more for physical products).

You have a winner!

Once you have several “winners”, our next step is to see if we can “source” (or
create) the same (or similar) products to offer in our OWN Etsy store!

This is covered in the next section below.

1) “Instant Cash” Tips For Sourcing & Selling

Digital Products On Etsy
“Public domain” is a goldmine for acquiring rare, yet free digital products (images,
books, video, movies, old radio programs, etc. etc.) that you can then sell.

If you are unfamiliar with public domain, this simply refers to creative works
(books, art, movies, radio programs, etc.) who's 'copyright' has expired. Such
works then fall into the 'public domain' realm which means anyone can sell the
works for whatever they want!

For example, in the USA (as said previously), works published before 1923 are in
the public domain. But many more recent works are also in the public domain by
virtue of the fact that their creators/authors chose not to renew their copyright
for whatever reason.

A complete “legal discourse” on public domain is obviously beyond the scope of

this guide and nothing in this guide should be construed as, or taken as legal or
professional advice.

How To Acquire Popular Digital Prints And Digital Books For Free:
One free online resource I use frequently is http://www.gutenberg.org/. Take
some time to explore and get familiar with this wonderful site. It has tons of
public domain books, vintage radio programs, and even vintage videos, all free
for the taking and legal to reproduce & sell!

NOTE: Be sure to familiarize yourself with the Gutenberg site rules, Terms Of
Service, and licensing rules. For example, if you download a 'public domain'
ebook, it isn't considered truly “public domain” until you remove any and all
Gutenberg references from the book (easy to do – usually any such references
come only at the beginning and end of the book). ALSO, works on this site are in
the public domain in the USA only – They may also be in the public domain for
other countries too but if you are outside of the USA, check.

Sometimes the book is not in PDF format (a common book file format on
Gutenberg is EPUB)... No problem...download the EPUB book and then go to
http://www.zamzar.com which is a FREE online website that converts file formats.

35
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Upload the file you want converted and use the drop down menu to select the file
type you want the item converted to (pdf in the example above – note that you
will have to scroll down the drop down menu to get to “Document Formats” to
find “pdf”). Upon entering an email address (so you can receive your converted
files) and clicking on the 'convert' button, you will have your book in PDF!

This website also allows you to convert video formats, image formats, etc. (very
handy!).

To edit any PDF (for example, to remove Gutenberg's references when necessary)
you can use this free online PDF editor: https://www.cutepdf-editor.com/.

Here are just a very few examples of public domain books I've found on the
Gutenberg site in the crafts and vintage prints niches...

36

And there's tons more works on every subject from crafts, cooking, classic stories
and more. You can, as said, also find classic old time radio shows, vintage TV
shows, historical texts and photos, and more.

Even better, you can use Google's Advanced Image Search to find tons of
copyright free art, prints, and images.

Simply Google “Google advanced image search” (or click on the Google link
above) and once there, enter the search term “(artist's name) prints”. Then
scroll down to where it says, “Usage Rights”. Use the drop down menu to select
either “free to use or share, even commercially”, or “free to use, share, or modify,
even commercially”

You can search by subject matter, artist's name, book title (if images were
published in a book) etc.

For example, searching “Margaret Tarrant prints” (Margaret Tarrant's “Alice In

Wonderland” prints, among others, are cherished) on Google Advanced Image
Search (with 'usage rights' set to “free to use, share or modify, even
commercially”), I got these results... (following page).

Think it would be hard to load up a CD with wonderful prints and sell it? (Or have
individual or sets of prints for sale, available as instant download?).

Think it would be hard to print these out onto photographic paper and sell them
(with or without matte frame) as physical reprints?

TIP: You can also do Google image searches using images themselves! Simply
download and save any image of interest (by right clicking on the image and
selecting 'save image as'. Then referring to the above screen shot, click on the
little camera icon at the right of the Google search bar. You get a pop up that
gives you the option of entering the image URL, or uploading an image to search.

This comes in handy if you've acquired physical prints (such as book plates for
example – covered below) and want to see if you can acquire copyright free
digital images of the physical prints. Simply scan the book plates into your
computer, and upload them to Google for a search (with the appropriate 'usage
rights' setting!).

38
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Another Google search technique you can use to acquire quality, royalty free
prints (for digital or physical reprint production) is to just do a regular Google
image search BUT add the words “commons license” to the end of your search
string. This returns images that are royalty free to use (but sometimes with
conditions). Many times, the only “condition” is that the original source of the
photo needs to be stated/acknowledged (also be sure the commons license allows
commercial use of the image).

With a bit of persistence, you'll be pleasantly surprised at how many interesting

and beautiful famous prints you can find! And remember, once found, you can
reproduce the image(s) to infinity and keep selling them forever!

Here's some handy info for digital item sellers on Etsy's site:
To learn how to list digital items, go here:https://www.etsy.com/help/article/3850

ETSY allows you to have up to 5 (zipped) files of up to 20MB each for EACH listng
you have so you can sell BUNDLES of prints in addition to single prints!

2) How To Acquire Popular FREE Prints For (Legally) Creating

Physical Reprints:
Simply follow the same methods as above to acquire public domain and/or royalty
free prints but instead of making them into digital products, print them onto
photographic paper! You can do this yourself or outsource it to a local printing
service, and you now have physical prints to sell!

You can optionally include frames or matte frames to increase the perceived value
of your prints.

Power Seller Tip: If you are planning on “printing” images for resale, scan/print
them at a minimum of 240 ppi (pixels per inch). 300 ppi is better and
preferred. This is needed to preserve the image quality (resolution). If
downloading an image for print, be sure it at 240-300 ppi also.

39
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

The chart below shows some standard “print photo” sizes (in inches) in the left
column, and in the columns to the right are shown how many pixels are needed
to maintain image quality when printed.

With digital photos that will only be seen on a computer monitor screen, you can
generally get away with less resolution (120-150 ppi). If you are interested in
how to precisely calculate minimum “ppi” for a given computer monitor size and
resolution, you can go here.

3) How To Acquire Rare And Popular ORIGINAL Vintage Prints For As

Little As A Dollar Or Two And Resell Them For $10-$35 Or More!
This is the market I especially like! Here's the thing...when you “purchase” a
physical book (any book), you are free to resell it without being in copyright
violation (because you are not “copying” the book). Furthermore, you are free to
“rip out” pages and sell them (because you own them...you BOUGHT the book!).

SO... To acquire “original prints” to sell on Etsy, we simply...

1) Locate popular high demand prints that are selling on Ebay (as we
discussed previously).
2) For listings advertising “book plate” prints, we study the listing(s) to deduce
the book they came from (often these listings will have the artist's name,
book name, date printed, etc.). We are specifically looking for “out of print”
books as this makes the plates (prints) more rare and thus more valuable.
3) We go to www.addall.com which is a searchable website (data base) that
specializes in listing sources for out of print books! You can search books by
date, author, title, keyword etc.

40
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Typically a book might contain 20-50 “plates” and can be bought (through the
Addall site) for $20-$50. Each plate (image) can then, in turn, can be sold for
$10-$35. These numbers can vary. I've found books for as little as $4.89 with
46 popular plates (prints) in them (even with shipping my cost per plate was less
than a quarter each!). In any event, all you have to do is research a bit and then
run the numbers...

1) You know what prices the prints go for from your eBay/Etsy research.

2) You know how many plates the book contains from the descriptions on
Addall (hint: check descriptions carefully to see if plates are one sided or 2
sided. If 2 sided, you can only sell 'half' the plates. That's still very
profitable, but something you need to know to run your numbers correctly).

3) Calculate your projected profit per book, and acquire these rare books
accordingly.

4) Optional – I also like to calculate how many plates I need to sell to recoup
my modest 'investment' in the book. I like to buy books with 30+ plates
that I need sell only 1-3 plates to recoup the cost of the book including
shipping (this is very doable!).
I've found rare out of print books going on Addall for as little as $5 or less ($10
including shipping) that have 40+ plates in them, where EACH print sells for
upwards of $10-$60 (plus shipping) and yielded over $1,850.00 in profit.

Typically you can run at 350% - 1,850% profit. Put another way, a $6-$25 book
with 30-50 plates need only sell 1-3 plates to pay for the entire book..the rest is
pure profit!

You simply remove the pages with the plates printed on them (I use a steel rule
and hobby knife to carefully remove pages) and that's your product! You can sell
the prints “as is” or in a “matte frame”.

4) How To Create Or Acquire Your Own Exclusive “Celebrity” Artwork

Prints Free Or At Very Low Cost For Resale 90%-100% Pure Profit.
This method requires some extra time and effort compared to the other methods
above, but the payoff can be quite handsome!

To execute this method, you will be creating (or outsourcing) your OWN digital
“artwork” pieces based on popular public domain “celebrity” images you find
online. Doing this requires some (minimal) graphics knowledge and software use
BUT the software is FREE and there are lots of newbie friendly online “tutorials”
(also FREE) to help you get going with the software (Ref links below!).

As an example, if we started with a colored public domain “photo” of a famous

person and altered it in several ways to add an artistic flair to it, we would end up
with an 'exclusive handmade original work' that we could sell!

Specifically, if we were to convert a photograph into a “digital painting” of that

person, and then add further alterations to it (say by setting the “painted” version
of the photo upon an 'offset' and partially opaque “black and white” print of the
person - both created by transforming the original image), we can transform the
original photo into an “added value”, unique and original 'artwork'.

We can ALSO add new “elements” to the piece. This can include things like
additional transformed image(s), new or different colored backgrounds, and/or an
assortment of design effects (all easy to do). ALSO we want to be sure that the
piece represents an 'artwork' and not an “ad”...in other words, we can't have the
celebrity in the image (even a copyright free image) “appearing to endorse”
anything.

If you find that you enjoy creating “graphic art”, you can eventually get really
fancy, creative, and imaginative... BUT you don't have to get complicated!
Popular salable prints can be simple and fast to produce using minimal “very basic
skills” with free software.

“Celebrity artworks” (whether based on public domain images or under commons

HOWEVER, once created, you can just print and sell the art image again and
again and again AND because they are your OWN exclusive creations, you'll have
a “corner” on the market with a line of totally unique products!

NOTE: When we say “celebrity image” we often think in terms of TV/Movie stars,
famous people, scientists, models, singers/bands, etc. HOWEVER, the term
“celebrity” doesn't always have to refer to “people”!

A “celebrity image” may be a famous vintage car, or a nostalgic name brand, or

an animal (of fame), or it can be a tribute to a popular passion, or to a popular
pastime.

To create your own “celebrity artwork” prints, you can use a free software
program called GIMP which is an open source version of Photoshop. You can
download it free here. Here is the GIMP online manual. A detailed graphics course
is beyond the scope of this guide. HOWEVER, you can learn all you need to know
from free online tutorials.

Here are some basic online video tutorials showing how to use GIMP:
(you can search for additional tutorials on Google and/or You Tube)

JUST REMEMBER that (when outsourcing) any craft or art item you sell on ETSY must
be of your OWN design.

respectively)....

and create this...in about 11 minutes.

My 1st try took me a full morning, but you get much faster with a bit of practice.
The resulting composite could use a little more blending and touching up, but you
get the idea. The nice thing is, you only have to do the work of “creating” your
celebrity art pieces ONCE. Then you can sell them FOREVER (either as a physical
print OR as a digital print).

5) How To Acquire Vintage Goods And Exclusive Crafts (Locally) For

Additional Etsy Profits.
Personally, as said, I like the “prints” business for selling on Etsy. However, Etsy
has many popular niches beyond just prints! In the case of crafts, ETSY says you
can have them made by someone other than yourself but the original design
or idea must be yours. So when looking at crafts (locally) you are looking for
ideas you can modify as your own originals and then outsource the manufacture
of. In the case of vintage items, you can just source them directly and sell them.

So how do we source vintage items or get craft ideas for listing on Etsy?
There are any number of ways...
1) Attend some local craft shows and/or visit flea markets in your area. Upon
finding VINTAGE items that fit your Etsy niche, ask the seller/creator if they
have (or would consider) giving you a”wholesale” or “lot” price on any
vintage items. TIP: As part of the deal start out by just getting a small
'sampling' of items at reduced price before you commit to larger amount so
you can test market and refine your Etsy offers. For crafts you have to
design your own BUT craft makers LOVE to tell you how they made stuff!
TALK to them! Use their ideas as a basis to design your own unique items.
It's FUN and potentially very profitable!

2) Estate sales and yard sales (boot sales for our UK friends) can contain
vintage items that are popular. Also keep an eye out for interesting vintage
crafts books and craft patterns books.

3) Craigslist (and other classified ad sources) can also put you in touch with
crafts makers/vintage items...You can search Craigslist OR place your own
“wanted” ads. Here's a website that lists other ad sites similar to Craigslist:
adsiteslikecraigslist.com.

4) Bonus Tip! Another way you can use Craiglist to make money on Etsy is to
have online garage (boot) sales! Gather items that are handmade or
vintage (and are small enough to ship cheaply). Then create an Etsy store
based on an online yard sale theme! Promote the store by advertising on
Craigslist (in your city). To find garage sales, look under “for sale” and
select “wanted”. On the page that shows up, use the drop down menu to
select “garage sales” and that brings you to a page that lists garage and
moving sales...look at what people are posting (to get ideas for your ad).

45
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Instructions to post a Craigslist garage sale ad can be found here.

No matter which of the sourcing items above you pursue, just make sure that any
items you acquire are either “vintage” (over 20 years old) OR “handmade” (they
don't have to be handmade by you..they can be handmade by third parties...but
for craft items the original design must be YOURS – ref Etsy's rule on this here).

_________________________________

SO, once we've found a profitable Etsy niche, and found (or created) some nice
products, we can get to work thinking about our Etsy 'branding' and start setting
up our Etsy store!

This is covered for you in the next section.

46
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Uniquely “Branding” Your Etsy Shop & Making

It Look Fantastic Too!
OK so by now you've...

– Searched & studied successful product listings on Etsy & Ebay and selected
a high demand niche.

– Selected & sourced some “hot” products to sell.

– Created a listing 'swipe file' to aid in constructing your listings, outlines &
descriptions.

Now we need to prepare to get our Etsy store up and running!

Creating a basic Etsy store is a simple matter. 1st we have to register with Etsy
Simply go to Etsy and register here. Here are instructions on how to do that:
www.etsy.com/help/article/244.

Note that, when registering, your “full name” and “user name” cannot be changed
once chosen.

From there, setting up your store is a simple and straight forward process. You
can reference this helpful Etsy article to see the simple steps:
https://www.etsy.com/help/article/246

However, BEFORE we can complete the set up of our NEW Etsy store, we need to
do some thinking...

If you were opening an offline business at your local mall, you wouldn't build a
Brick & Mortar store without first giving some careful thought to store
signage, interior decor, store name, store branding & theme, etc. You
would likely go so far as to have blueprints drawn up before you started building
any interior decor.

Likewise, we need to give some thought to our virtual Etsy store...we need to
formulate a sort of blueprint in our mind as to what 'vision' our store should
project and make sure we project it clearly and consistently at every opportunity.

The GOOD news is this is MUCH EASIER (and faster!) to do within the Etsy mall
than it would be in a REAL mall!

47
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Specifically, we need to...

– Consider our store 'branding' (we want to differentiate ourselves AND our
store in the eyes of our buyers)

– Pick a store name (that expresses our brand & entices our visitors)

– Create a profile picture & unique banner (using simple online tools)

– Set up our Etsy Profile Page, About Page & our Store Policies Page
(these represent additional opportunities to “differentiate” ourselves and
“promote” ourselves in a unique and enticing way)

...and finally we need to;

– Create some enticing listings! (offer a minimum of 4 products and then

add more later)

Developing A 'Brand':
Developing a “brand” isn't as hard to do as you might first think! After all, most of
the 'hard work' has already been done for you by other sellers (or other product
creators). We NEVER want to 'copy' someone's brand, BUT, we can combine &
twist another brand (or brands) into our own unique theme (remember our
swipe file?).

That said, here's a tip that will allow you to rise above your competition. Look
for something your competition isn't doing (or isn't saying) and DO IT or SAY IT!

DO IT or SAY IT! In your store name...

DO IT or SAY IT! In your listing descriptions...
DO IT or SAY IT! In your packaging...
Etc. etc.

For example, don't be shy about explaining the details of how you carefully and
securely package your customer's items in a certain way to ensure it arrives
undamaged. Explain how each piece is carefully inspected both prior to listing and

48
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

again prior to shipping to ensure high quality... etc. Your competition is likely
doing the same things BUT NOT SAYING they are! So YOU end up on top!

Let's again consider the “print” niche. Specifically, let's return to our “Alice In
Wonderland - Margaret Tarrant prints example” mentioned earlier. Do we want to
theme our store as a unique “Alice in Wonderland Emporium”? Or do we instead
want to build our store around the artist “Margaret Tarrant”?...

Do we want to narrow our niche to a specific time period? Margaret Tarrant

published her books from 1908-1952... Do we want to target prints from the
early 1900's from this artist?....Or from several artists of that period? Do we want
to target a certain 'type' of print? (Victorian?, Renaissance?, Late Modern? Early
Modern? Abstracts? Etc.). Do we want to offer a specific “kind” of print? (digital?
Rare originals? Reprints printed on photographic paper? Reprints printed on
canvas?...)

Do we instead want to broaden our niche by targeting a wider time period? A

wider selection of artists? A wider selection of prints from a specific subject
matter?

The answer will lie in what our product research told us, as well as in
which products we have sourced (or decided to source). As well, our
passion for a particular artist, theme, or type of print may guide us too.

IMPORTANT: We want a niche that's wide enough to attract a large variety of

buyers, BUT narrow enough to still be considered a “specialty”.

My advice is go as wide as possible while still “specializing”.

On the one hand, you don't want to become too “generic”... You don't want to be
“Wal-Mart” - Everything to everybody...that's too wide to differentiate.
...Nothing against Wal-Mart (ASDA in the UK)...I shop at ASDA all the time...but
it's too wide a business model for our purposes.

You also don't want to be “Yankee Candle Shop” either – that's too narrow....

You want to be “Barnes & Noble” (“Waterstones” in UK) - still specializes (in
books) BUT appeals to a wide variety of people with a wide variety of products
(CD's, movies, games, etc.).

49
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

See the difference?

Just remember... Once you've decided on a certain range of products to offer, you
must make sure there is a clearly identified, enticing, and unifying theme.

If you are selling “prints”, are they “unified” by artist? By subject matter? By time
period?, Or other?

If you are selling craft items, are they unified by craft type?, decor type? Era?

If you are selling handmade soaps, are they unified by subject matter (shapes)?,
specialization (like hypo-allergenic)? A particular grouping of scent selections?

Etc.

ALSO remember that you can divide your Etsy shop items into “selections”
(product categories) which allows you to broaden your niche/theme.

You can also own more than one shop! So eventually (if you wish) you can
target more than one niche (which allows you to narrow your niche/theme).

ASIDE: Etsy allows sellers to have multiple shops if they wish, BUT each shop must have a
different unique user name and email address (but can still use the same credit card and
PayPal email address). ALSO, all of the shops' “user names” must be clearly disclosed in the
Public Profile of each account (“Public Profiles” are covered shortly below). Specifically,
Etsy says that a statement such as, "I am also an Etsy seller under these usernames..."
should be added (this policy includes any and all Etsy “buying” accounts the seller may have
too). THIS IS A GOOD RULE as you can LINK all your stores TOGETHER via
the stores' profile pages!

If/When you want to open up a second or multiple Etsy shops, there is more you
should know (for example, you are not allowed to list identical items in multiple
shops. And if just ONE of your shops/accounts get's shut down for some reason,
Etsy will shut down ALL your shops). Be sure to read these rules from Etsy
regarding having multiple shops.

50
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Picking Your Store Name:

This task goes hand in hand with picking your store theme. You want your store
name to reflect your theme (specialty) in a consistent and clear way.

You should note that, once your Etsy store goes “live”, Etsy allows you to change
your store name “instantly” only ONCE. After that, any further store name
change(s) can only be made by submission to & approval of Etsy's 'support team'.

Thus spending some time to create a strong branding name for your shop is time
well spent!

In creating a “store name”, you want to select something that...

1) Immediately and clearly brands you
2) Is easy to remember
3) Entices your customer
4) Creates immediate “perceived value” for your products

That seems like a tall order, but it can be done (remember that swipe file?). Also
don't be afraid to “brainstorm” a bunch of names, mixing and matching as you go
and then select the best one.

Let's continue with our Alice in Wonderland / Margaret Tarrant” example...

If our unifying theme was “Alice In Wonderland Prints”, we could look at

something like “Alice In Wonderland Prints Emporium”.
Let's work on making it more enticing...

“Alice In Wonderland Vintage Prints Emporium”

“Alice In Wonderland Antique Prints Emporium”
“Alice In Wonderland Original Prints Emporium”
“Alice In Wonderland Rare Prints Emporium”

Let's make it easier to remember and drop the 'Emporium'...

“Alice In Wonderland Vintage Prints”

“Alice In Wonderland Antique Prints”
“Alice In Wonderland Original Prints”
“Alice In Wonderland Rare Prints”
If we are basing our theme on the “artist”, we might consider “Margaret Tarrant
Prints” (as a starting point).

51
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Now there's already an Etsy shop called that...so we might “twist” it a bit and call
it... “Prints From Margaret Tarrant”, OR “The Margaret Tarrant Collection” or even
“The Margaret Tarrant Original Prints Collection”.

See how the title now “entices” the buyer? It's not just any “Margaret Tarrant”,
it's THE Margaret Tarrant...It's not just “prints”, it's the ORIGINAL Prints
COLLECTION...OOOoooooh....I want some of that!!

Creating A Profile Picture, Bio, & Unique Store Banner

Using FREE Newbie Friendly Online Tools:
Having a profile picture (or avatar) and a unique Etsy store banner/header is a
key part of your Etsy store “branding”. You can do this using free online tools.

Let's start with your profile picture...Your Etsy avatar/profile picture should
be a square image at 400X400 pixels (and <10MB). The best option is a good
clear photo of yourself. A color frame around your picture helps distinguish it
from Etsy's white background (in the case of “vintage prints”, we can get even
more imaginative and use a vintage print 'background' as a frame and maybe
even make our photo look 'vintage' to reinforce our vintage brand).

An avatar based on your theme or products would be an OK second choice but an

actual photo of yourself is by far best as it helps build trust.

Writing Your Bio (Profile):

Along with your “picture”, Etsy allows you to add a 'Bio' (Profile) which is
something you should definitely do. The purpose of your Bio is to help you make
a “personal connection” with your store audience.

Here is some info about writing your Etsy “Bio” www.etsy.com/help/article/66

Anytime you want to edit your bio, just go to “Your Account” - and select “Public
Profile”.

Here's the KEY to writing a good Bio... It should NOT be a resume! People
don't care where you went to school. INSTEAD, make your bio a story! Make it an
expression of your passion as it relates to your niche. Use it to tap into and
trigger people's emotions. Read other bios and see what grabs you and what
bores you!

52
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Here's an example of a badly written Bio...

My name is Jimbo. [redundant – they already see your name on your store]
I like football, swimming and hiking [who cares – what does this have to do with
what you're selling]

Here's an example of a good Bio...

I have a passion for collecting paper ephemera, particularly from the late
Victorian, Art Nouveau period.

I love bringing my finds to a new audience who will appreciate them as much as I
do!

[See how in the latter example we bring ourselves (and our products) to life? And
how we also make a more personal connection with our audience?]

TIP: Just as we created a 'swipe file' for our listings by looking at what other
successful sellers are saying, we should also look at what other successful sellers
are saying in their bios too and use it as a guide to writing our own.

Creating Your Etsy Shop Icon And Cover Photo:

You will need two graphics for your ETSY shop - a shop icon and a cover photo.
Although two separate graphics, they work together to represent your shop as a
whole. When someone visits your shop, these eye-catching elements should
create positive emotions and convey what your business is all about. Your shop
icon should be 500 X 500 pixels and your Cover Photo should (ideally) be 3360 X
840 pixels (or a minimum of 1200 x 300). Here is a terrific ETSY info page that
tells you all you need to know: https://www.etsy.com/help/article/160

GOOD NEWS! It's now a simple matter to create your ETSY shop icon and cover
photo...Etsy has partnered with Canva to provide templates that make it easy to
create your ETSY shop graphics that are the perfect size for uploading to Etsy (NO
tech skills needed!). You can use graphic elements from Canva’s library (most are
free or cost as little as $1) or upload your own images.

Go here to start your design. Instructions are included (if you scroll down). HERE
is an easy to follow VIDEO TUTORIAL that shows you how to use Canva to create
your ETSY cover image.

53
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

To create your ETSY icon, just follow the SAME process using the ICON template
rather than the COVER IMAGE template shown in the above video!).
NOTE: In past, ETSY shops had 'shop banners' only. However, NOW you can go
with a 'shop banner' OR a 'cover photo'...A cover photo is just larger than a
banner and of a different size....

CANVA has templates for BOTH so you can choose which you prefer (you only
need one or the other, not both).

You can also spend $5-$10 on Fiverr and have your ETSY shop graphics made
FOR you but Canva is so simple to use, I'd save the money and do it myself.

If you are stuck for cover image ideas, here is a terrific web page with excellent
tips to get you going!

ALTERNATIVES: MS Paint and/or Gimp are also FREE programs you can use if
you are familiar with them (or if not familiar, there are tons of tutorial videos
online)

Here's a quick banner I created in MS Paint using a shrunken & cropped “screen
capture” of a bunch of Public Domain Margaret Tarrant prints.

And here's a banner you could make using Gimp.

As said previously, GIMP is also free (and there are free online tutorials too). But
the fastest easiest way to create stunning headers is with CANVA.

As you can see, with banner designs, often times, “less is more”.

54
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Same with Cover Photos.

Here's a very cool and clever thing you can do with a banner OR Cover
Photo design. Often a “good photo” will be too tall to fit inside a 100 pixel high
header.

Nice image but at 200 pixels high, it's too tall for our 100 high pixel banner

The image above is a good example of this. If we reduced it in size we would lose
the “detail” that makes it such an exquisite image.

What we did instead (below) is take the 200 pixels high image, and slice it
horizontally into two 100 pixel high images (You can use Paint, GIMP, or any
graphics cropping software to do this – Your not making any changes to the
image itself...just sizing and cropping).

We then placed the top & bottom halves of the image respectively on the left and
right sides of our banner!

It creates a unique look and is a neat way to retain the resolution and beauty of a
great image!

Finally, here is another example of a banner created using the above techniques!

Bonus! - In your 'surprise unannounced bonuses folder (included free with this
course) is a PDF titled “20 Best FREE Stock Image Sources”. With these

55

sources, you'll have access to lots of beautiful images you can use free!
At this point, you can certainly start filling the 'virtual shelves' of your new Etsy
store by creating some listings (& preparing your listing photos). HOWEVER,
there are still some miscellaneous “store info” items that we need to take care of
too. Specifically, we want to be sure to to fill out our Etsy About Page, and also
create our Etsy Shop Policies Page.

These additional pages again provide us more chances to “reinforce our

branding”, “differentiate ourselves”, and build trust.

How To Write A Wonderful Etsy “About” Page:

Your Etsy “About” Page gives you a chance to tell people about your shop. Here
is some info on Etsy's site for writing your Etsy “About” Page:
www.etsy.com/help/article/2661

Like your bio, you want your About Page to show why you are passionate about
your products and show some personality too – Always write in the 1 st person to
make the strongest personal connection!

You can consider your About page to be an expanded version of your Bio but this
is aimed not so much at what you are about so much as what your STORE is
about as an “extension” of yourself.

Here is an example of a well written About Page...

Keeping the past alive by bringing antique and vintage book illustrations to a new
audience!
I spend much of my time trawling antique fairs and charity shops in my native North West England and latterly in the
beautiful and historic island of Ireland.

Over the years I have built up a substantial collection of paper ephemera but now I am finding it increasingly difficult to
find the space to store my collection.

The idea for my Etsy store was born out of the need to downsize my collection to free up living space for my family (three
teenagers and a nine year old plus a very curious cat!).

Antique book illustrations provide a low cost way to add unusual and beautiful art to any room in any home.

Modern reprints can never replicate the unique patina or scent of century old paper that has lain undisturbed for decade
after decade nor can they deliver the thrill that only comes from holding genuinely antique or vintage items in your hands.

Put Links On Your About Page!!:

Your Etsy About Page is also the place to put links!! Specifically, you want to list
links to your FB fan page (we will be creating later) as well as to other Web 2.0
sites (Twitter, your blog, You Tube channel, etc.) if you have them. You ALSO
want to have a strong, enticing, fun call to action for each link that
answers your customer's main question; WIIFM (“What's In It For Me”).

Your 'About' page is a great spot to capture people's email addresses too!! Have a
link to an email 'opt-in' page (also called 'squeeze pages' or 'landing pages') that
offer an strong free incentive for people to 'opt-in' to your Etsy newsletter (you
can embed an opt-in form onyour FB fan page (more on this later).

ALSO as we talked about earlier, you MUST add links of any additional Etsy
shops/accounts you have on this page also! (if you have multiple shops or
Etsy accounts). This is actually a GOOD rule! Interconnecting your shops can only
BOOST your audience for each shop after all!

Creating Your Shop Policies Page:

ETSY also has added a shop policies form (template) which is a page you
should definitely fill out. Completing your “shop policies” page (when you set
up your ETSY shop) will give you the following advantages...

1) Your policies help create trust, credibility, and excitement.

2) It's a further way to “brand” yourself and “differentiates” you from other
shops in a positive way.

3) Believe it or not, it can bring you MORE FREE TRAFFIC!

ETSY wants its shoppers to have a “positive shopping experience”.

ETSY feels that part of this positive experience comes from shops having the
'policies section' (and other pages above) completed and so they actually give a
search ratings boost to shops that have these pages fully done! These additional
pages again provide us more chances to “reinforce our branding”, “build trust”,
and “differentiate ourselves”. Here is an excellent ETSY info page that show you
all you need to know to create your policies page and here is a policies FAQ page.

57
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Remember that “policies” are not meant to unduly “restrict” your customers, but
rather, they are their to PROTECT and REASSURE your customers (which results
in increased sales). Of course you are free to modify your policies as you see fit,
but here is what I personally recommend...

– Whenever possible, offer unrestricted worldwide shipping to reach the

largest market possible.

– Keep the shipping costs you charge to a minimum – recoup only your actual
shipping cost (or even a bit less than your cost). Customers are quick to
spot when they are being bilked on shipping costs.

– Whenever possible, offer 'same day' shipping (“shipped within 48 hours”

should be the maximum delay).

– Always offer shipping and/or product price discounts for multiple item
orders to encourage larger sales.

– Have a very generous return policy and a “no hassles” unconditional

guarantee. Removing all risk for your buyers is what will get them to
BUY. A more generous guarantee will virtually ALWAYS produce an increase
in sales large enough to easily offset any increase in refund rate.

– Always give your customer the benefit of the doubt. For every
“complaining” customer that tries to 'rip you off' (extremely rare), there are
500 that are 'completely honest and on the level'.

Case in point, a customer wants a refund because the goods are “damaged”
in transit. YES the customer “might” by lying...Am I going to make them
ship the item back to me to “prove” their claim before I refund? It's up to
you, but I just refund in full including shipping – no hassles.

Are you going to set up your policies so you LOSE 500 honest customers
just to avoid being taken advantage of by one bad apple? Your call :)

Here's a good way to set up your policies...ask yourself this. “If this customer
were my grandmother, would I still hold her to these policies? If not, don't hold

58
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

your customers to them either...modify your policy.

There's just one more thing we need to do in preparation for creating our listings,
and that is to prepare our product photo's. It isn't particularly hard to prepare
excellent photos, but you need to be aware of some basic 'tricks of the trade'.
That's what the next section talks about.

Simple Secrets To Creating Excellent “Studio Quality” Photos

WITHOUT Expensive Equipment.
On Etsy, the optimum size for photos is about 1000 pixels high by 800-1000
pixels wide (or for landscape prints, 1000px wide by almost as tall). You can play
with these numbers somewhat and see how they look BUT the idea is you DON'T
want your photo's to be much smaller than this (so that when customers use the
'zoom' option they can still see the enlarged picture clearly), YET, you don't want
to be much larger than this because then they may take too long to load in
people's browsers.

ETSY now lets you post up to TEN images per listing! Use AT LEAST 3-5 of
these slots to show several images of your product as this gives customers a
better feel for your wares. Use all ten slots if you can!

Your first image becomes your listing's PRIMARY image and is the image that will
appear in searches, in your shop, and elsewhere on the ETSY site.
• To change the order of an image, click on a thumbnail and drag it to the left
or right.
• We recommend you use at least five images to help shoppers get a better
feel for your item.
• If you’d like to crop the full-size image that appears on your public listing
page, click the pencil icon under your photo.

59
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

If you are selling “prints”, from the public domain then the process of creating
good photo's is straightforward. Simply copy and paste the print being listed.

If you are sourcing prints from bookplates, you can simply scan the images into
your computer (at 300 ppi). If you don't have a printer/scanner, often you can get
them scanned at a library or office supply/printing store (or use a friend's
scanner). OR you could locate a 'commons license' digital copy of the print online
of sufficient quality and use that.

If you are selling a product or products that require actual photographs,

you will need to make a bit more effort, but you can still create high quality
photo's without expensive equipment!

NOTE: If you only have a cell phone camera, there is still a way you can get
professional looking photos. Here's an excellent less that 2 min video that shows
you how!

That said, if you have, or when you acquire a digital camera, you can use the
following simple tips to get excellent studio quality photos without investing in
expensive lighting or other equipment.

The 1st trick to avoiding having to invest in expensive lighting equipment is to

use natural daylight. Now most natural daylight is actually too bright, but
there’s a specific kind of daylight that works well. Wait until you have a day that
is bright but overcast (not dark or stormy). On days like this, use light coming in
through a north-facing window. The result is a crisp, white light that is wonderful
for photos.

Another lighting tip: If the light coming in from the window is causing one
side of your piece to get lost in shadows, create a reflector with a simple
piece of aluminum foil wrapped around a rectangular piece of cardboard. Set up
one or more of these 'low tech” reflectors on the shadowy side of your image.
Angle the foil facing the window so it reflects more light into any darkened areas.

Experiment with a variety of close up shots to see what looks best.

Look through your camera’s user manual. See if your camera has a feature
called EV “Exposure value”. Put simply, this feature allows your camera to
adjust to the light available when you’re taking a photograph. It will make
changes based on how much light is coming from behind the object you’re

60
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

photographing, how close or far away the object is, and other factors.

With most cameras, you can manually adjust the EV setting to improve
your photos.

On higher EV settings, the effects of “camera shake” become more pronounced.

This is because your camera is much more sensitive to movement when on high
EV settings. You always have the option of using a tripod or, if you don't have a
tripod, setting your camera on a firm surface. Using a timer to take photos can
also eliminate the camera shake that occurs when you physically snap the photo
manually.

You can also experiment with your camera's White Balance (again refer to your
camera manual) Different types of light can appear with different predominant
colors. Depending on the type of light source, you may have an orange, yellow, or
bluish “cast” to your photos.

The idea of “White Balance” is to match your camera’s light setting with the type
of light you’re using in your photograph, so the lighting looks natural (some
cameras simplify this by offering labeled settings such as “outdoor”, “indoor”,
“fluorescent”, etc.

Experiment as you did before with your EV settings to find what White Balance
setting works best to produce evenly-toned (not overly yellow or overly blue)
photos.

NOTE: If you are adjusting both the EV and the white balance, you may
have to take an iterative approach optimizing each in turn one or more times to
“zero in” on the best pair of settings. Adjusting the white balance first often works
best.

Experiment with different backdrops.

Most times a white piece of poster board is all you need to achieve striking
photos. Alternately, you might place your item on a piece of fabric, or even a
patio tile backdrop. Take lots of photos to see what works best. KEEP NOTES of
your settings so that once you do discover the settings for that 'perfect' photo,
you know how to repeat it!

Take shots from different angles, close up and further away, etc. Sometimes,

61
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

simply taking a photo of your item at an angle, rather than straight on can make
all the difference!

All this photographic “experimenting” may seem daunting at first, but taken one
step at a time, it's not hard to do. Bear in mind that once you've discovered the
best lighting, backdrops and angles to take your photos, taking future photos will
be a snap!

Once you get the best lighting, positioning and angles worked out, and are ready
to take your final shots, concentrate on “focus”. You want to focus every photo
carefully and precisely to avoid blurriness.

An alternate “lighting” solution to the “natural light” method mentioned above is

to build yourself a “light box”. You can construct a 'homemade' light box for less
than $10 and use it to produce pictures so crisp and clear they will look like they
were taken in a professional studio. This short video shows you how to make
your own light box out of a cardboard box, some 'Muslin fabric' (or you can use
white tissue paper), tape, and white paper (used as a backdrop). It also contains
some handy photo taking tips too!

If you’re selling USABLE items such as clothing, handbags, jewelry, etc., then
showing the item(s) being used or worn can add great 'context' to your product
photos. Note: If you don't have access (via friends etc.) to one or several good
looking “models”, bear in mind you need not show a face...Jewelry can be shown
with only hands, wrists, and/or chest in photo. Handbags can be shown close-up,
draped over a shoulder with no face visible, etc.

If you’re selling prints or artwork, take a picture of it on a wall. Help your

customers envision how your products will look in their home or on their person.

To encourage multiple sales, take a group shot of some of your pieces that best
complement each other (just make sure to be super clear in the listing which item
is included with the purchase so customers don’t think they’re getting the

62

whole set). A good way to encourage multiple item purchases is to have links in
your listing that lead to one or several of your other listings! (again, make sure
the products complement each other).

Creating Persuasive Listings That Tap Into People's

Buying Emotions!
Once you have your photos ready, you can set yourself to creating your actual
listings! Hurray!!!! REMEMBER that we want to create listings that are
persuasive. We do this by writing descriptions that tap into people's buying
emotions.

You want to create at least four listings (more if possible) and keep adding more
listings to your store on a regular basis (this encourages people to bookmark your
store and revisit it often – Google also favors pages that are updated regularly!).

Once you get a good number of products listed, consider adding “sections” to
your Etsy store. Recall that a 'section' is simply a subgroup of related products in
your Etsy store. Here is a page that shoes you how to create product sections in
your Etsy store.

Creating Listings:
Let's start out with the basics. Here are two handy Etsy info pages that tell
you, step by step, how to create listings:

To create listings for PHYSICAL products, go here.

To create listings for DIGITAL products, go here.

Variations: If you are offering PHYSICAL products and your product is of a type
where you can offer variations (example, choice of color, choice of 'size' etc.),
Etsy allows you to add these choices to your listing(s). (NOTE: “variations” are
not available for digital products).

If/When you offer a 'choice' in a listing, Etsy will not complete the order until the
buyer has made the appropriate selections. You are allowed to enter up to 2
variation “properties” in a single listing. So say, for example, you are selling...
“retro print shirts”, you might have your customers select a color (1 st variation
property) and a size (2nd variation property).

63
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

For a full listing of allowed variation “properties” and directions on how to create
listings with variations, go here (there is also a terrific instructional VIDEO on this
page too!).

Write A Persuasive Product Description:

Writing persuasive listings isn't as daunting as it may 1 st sound. Remember your
swipe file? Also your free bonus (included in this package), Anatomy of an
Irresistible Ebay/Etsy Offer contains all you need to know (and then some!) to
create excellent offers.
When we create our product descriptions, we want our words to do 3 things...

1) Build the item's “perceived value” in the eyes of your customer – that is,
make the customer want, need & CRAVE the product(s) being offered.

2) Get the customer to take action and actually BUY the product!

3) Attract highly targeted traffic from both within Etsy AND outside search
engines by using specific keywords and keyword phrases in our
product titles and descriptions.

1 & 2 above are covered in your bonus guide Anatomy of an Irresistible

Ebay/Etsy Offer (#3 will be covered later under the section about how to
promote your Etsy store).

Basically you want your listing(s) to have lots of buyer benefits, and you want to
also trigger your buyers' emotions (people buy on emotion, not logic). You also
want a strong guarantee so your customers know they are protected and can buy
without risk. You also want lots of 'calls to action'...that is, ASK your customer to
buy.

The bonus guide covers this in more detail. BUT even without the bonus guide,
just looking at what other successful sellers are doing (and using your swipe file),
you can create awesome and persuasive listings!

64
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Writing Descriptions That Sell!

A good method for writing persuasive listings is to follow 2 steps...
1) Create a listing “outline” and use that SAME outline for ALL of your listings.
Using a “common outline” for all of your listings allows you to create them
faster and yet still give them lots of punch. A common outline also allows
your customers to more easily absorb your listing information.

2) Write the content (listing description) following the outline you created
(i.e. fill up the outline).

A typical listing outline might be...

• Bullet point listing of product's main features & benefits (for the overview
portion of your listing).
• Introductory paragraph describing your “vision”
• Story/History behind the product.
• Emotion triggering detailed description of item (emotional triggers can
include “nostalgia”, “beauty”, “childhood memories”, “admiration of friends”
etc.)
• Exact dimensions of the art/product, followed by 'details' which lists all of
the materials used, dates created, etc.
• Finally, a “more info” (faq) section, which supplies general info about
secure packaging, fast shipping, gift orders, buyer’s rewards, coupons etc.
(as applicable) and a link to your “policies page” for customers seeking
more info.

Again use other listings as (in your niche) as models (combine the best of
the best!).

Build perceived value (see below), and (again) use lots of emotional triggers
(remember, people buy on EMOTION).

Also don't forget to have strong “calls to action” (that is, don't assume people will
just automatically click on your ADD TO CART button...TELL them to!

Calls to action can include phrases like,

“click the ADD TO CART BUTTON start YOUR OWN exclusive collection today!”
“click the ADD TO CART BUTTON below while supplies last!”
“click the ADD TO CART BUTTON below before prices rise!” … etc.

65
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Keep calls to action direct, short, simple, and specific.

ALWAYS have a strong guarantee and STATE it!! The purpose of a strong
guarantee is to remove risk for the buyer. Buyers don't have the advantage of
being able to pick up your item in their hand and examine it...SO..they must be
assured that if the product arrives and they don't like it, they can easily return it
for a full no hassles refund.

Power Seller Tip: A more liberal refund policy will virtually always produce way
more sales than it does refunds...don't be afraid to give your customers the
benefit of the doubt if they are less than thrilled with their purchase.

When you can get them, testimonials are always a super good thing to have.
Offer past customers a coupon for a fixed amount off of their next purchase in
exchange for an honest testimonial (see “coupons” below). Take the best of these
testimonials and publish them on your listings!

Tell a story (or provide a vision) that inspires viewers to indulge themselves!
And/or emotionally invest in your art or items. Tell stories that get the viewer to
visualize having the product sitting on their shelf or hanging on their wall or
draping over their shoulder etc.

To tell a story about your item, ask yourself these questions. What is the item
made of? How did you make it / acquire it? Where did it come from? What
'history' is attached to the item. What makes it special? Is it a 1st edition, original,
limited edition, reprint of a rare original? What emotions does it evoke?
(nostalgia?, childhood memories?, exclusivity? Envy of friends? Etc.). What
inspired YOU about this product?

Let’s say someone buys your item, and a friend of theirs sees it and asks your
customer about the item... What would you want your customer to say if you
could put words into their mouth?

ALL of these questions will help you to develop YOUR story & branding for your
items.

In your descriptions, don't BS...tell the truth. Your customers will appreciate it!

Writing Powerful Listing Titles

You should probably spend as much time writing your listing title as you do your
entire listing. Etsy allows you up to 140 characters in your listing title. Use this
space to full advantage. Your title is what gets people to click onto your listing
and read it, so make it enticing!

In your store, potential customers see only the 1st 28-30 characters of your title,
so the beginning of your title is particularly important. These 1 st 28 characters
must motivate visitors to click onto the listing!! Your title needs to...

– Give a clear specific description of your product in few words.

– Trigger emotions (curiosity, excitement, desire).
– Draw the viewer into the listing description.

Your listing titles should also contain as many of your best keyword phrases as
possible (covered later under the section about how to promote your Etsy store).

We will talk more about titles later, but for now, just be aware that your title has
to do in brief, what your entire listing does at length...create excitement, build
perceived value, differentiate you from the competition, and trigger peoples'
emotions.

Remember earlier when we talked about creating a name for your Etsy store?
Remember how we added words such as “vintage”, “original”, “rare”, etc. to build
perceived value and trigger emotions? We want to use similar descriptor words in
our listing titles...words like, “stunning”, “beautiful”, “stylish”, “unique”, “nostalgic”
etc. etc. (again that swipe file will come in very handy!) .

Don't Make It About Cost – Here's How You Can Increase

“Perceived Value” So You Can Get Higher Prices
When writing your listings, you always want to be building perceived value.
“Perceived value” is simply the “value” your customer attaches to your products.

Customers attach higher value to items that are unique, exclusive & specialized.
Whether we are selling art prints, handmade items, or vintage items, we can
easily increase the VALUE the customer “perceives” by using “value building”
words and phrases.

For example, Suppose you have an Etsy shop that sells “handmade soaps”. Any

67
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

potential buyer would likely “price compare” your soaps to other Etsy shop soaps
and so you are “forced” to compete on price and perhaps reduce your profit
margins.

To avoid this, we want to “build perceived value” by DIFFERENTIATING

ourselves from the “competition”.
SO...Instead of saying “handmade soap”, we can say, “scented, exfoliating,
handmade glycerin soap”.

See how the addition of descriptors enhance the VALUE and UNIQUENESS of the
product? FURTHER, price now becomes less of a concern... If the customer found
ANOTHER shop that sold “handmade soap”, there would not be any way to really
compare prices because YOUR soap is much more UNIQUE with specific benefits
added that your competition doesn't have (or doesn't SAY) they have. ALSO as
we shall see the addition of descriptors helps tremendously with KW searches!
If you are selling art prints, or vintage items, adding a few KEY descriptive words
will instantly build your uniqueness & perceived value. Words like...
“vintage”, “collectable”, “nostalgic”, “beautiful”, “limited edition”, “original”, “rare”,
“genuine”, “unique” etc.

Here's a quick funny story... Once, long ago, I was with a company selling
“shoulder bags”. When customers asked me if the “leather” was real (it wasn't), I
would reply (tongue in cheek), “This is GENUINE imitation leather...not that fake
imitation leather you see on other bags, this is GENUINE imitation leather!”

The customers would laugh and buy the product. By (jokingly) calling the bag
“genuine imitation leather” instead of just “imitation leather”, my sales almost
doubled! (I made a personal connection with customers by making them laugh).
Another time, we were selling these large sized desk calculators...they were big
and rather ugly and not selling...so one snowy winter day, here's what I did...I
told customers they were giant “ice scrapers” they could be used to scrape ice off
their windshields. They would reply, “no it's a calculator”. I would say, “oh ya I
suppose you could use these as calculators too, but they're really great at
removing ice!” They would laugh and pick one up! We sold out in a few days.

I'm not suggesting that you sell art prints as ice scrapers! But it illustrates a
point. By describing a 'common' product in an 'new and imaginative' way, we can
often dramatically increase the “perceived value” in our customer's eyes!

Another easy way to increase “perceived value” is to make the customer feel

68
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

secure when buying from you. Things like “securely packaged”, “same day
shipping”, “extra fast shipping”, etc. all increase perceived value.

Also (as mentioned, but it's worth mentioning again) having a strong
comprehensive GUARANTEE that removes all risk from your buyer increases
perceived value!

Your swipe file will help you with ideas for building perceived value.

ALSO, in your bonus guide “Creating Irresistible Etsy/Ebay Offers” check out the 2
sections titled, “Don't Assume Your Customer Knows Anything” AND
“Compare Apples To Oranges” for even MORE ideas on how to increase
perceived value.

How To Get BIGGER Sales, MULTIPLE Sales, and REPEAT Sales

There are 3 basic ways to build your Etsy profits...
1) Get more customers (covered in section II below)
2) Get customers to buy MORE than one item per order
3) Get existing customers to buy repeatedly

In THIS section we will discuss ways that we can encourage our customers to buy
MULTIPLE items and/or make repeat buys.

Etsy gives you THREE easy options that you can use to strongly encourage
'multiple item buys' and 'repeat buys' from your customers... It behooves any
smart seller to take full advantage of these options!
We can offer a discount coupon, we can offer reduced shipping on multiple
item purchases, and/or we can offer discounts on our multiple item
purchases themselves!

Offering Coupons
Etsy allows you to create “coupon codes” for your store (that you can then
promote off Etsy's site and/or on Etsy's site). There are several ways you can use
coupons to increase sales...

1) You can promote your coupon codes offsite (covered in section II)
2) For people who purchase an item (or items) you can send them a coupon
code valid on their future purchase(s) as a 'thank you' (to encourage repeat

69
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

sales)
3) You can offer a coupon discount right on your Etsy store. Your “Shop
Announcement” (covered below), is also a great place to offer a coupon
code to encourage larger sales.

Here is Etsy's info page telling you how to create coupon codes:
www.etsy.com/help/article/349

Etsy allows you to create 3 kinds of coupons...

• Percent Discount: This coupon gives your customer A flat percentage off
their entire order (not applied to shipping costs or tax rates).

• Free Shipping: This type of coupon removes shipping costs on the

shopper's order (this can be limited to orders shipped within your country).

• Fixed Dollar Amount Discount: Subtracts a set amount, such as $5, from
an order.

Here's some great info on Etsy coupon codes, along with some creative ways to
use them! https://blog.etsy.com/en/2013/improvements-to-coupon-codes/

You can also use coupons to “track” where your sales are coming from
(ref this article).

Offering Reduced Shipping On Multiple Items

Another handy option Etsy gives you is the ability to offer reduced shipping on
multiple item orders. The format followed is that you are prompted to enter
your shipping charge for one item purchased, and then a second (lower) shipping
charge for each additional item.

For example, if you are selling “vintage prints” the shipping charge on the 1 st item
might be set at $2.00 with each additional item purchased set at say $0.50 so
that if the person buys say 5 items, their total shipping is $4 ($2 + 4x$0.50)
instead of $10.

70
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Power Seller TIP: One thing I like to do is to set the additional items shipping
charge to $0.00 (zero dollars!). This way the customer pays shipping on the first
item only with FREE SHIPPING on all additional items! It's a great way to
encourage multiple item buys!

Here is some info on setting your Etsy shipping costs:

https://www.etsy.com/help/article/191

Power Seller TIP: If you have many similar size products with the same
shipping costs, you can save lots of time by creating a “shipping profile”.
Shipping Profiles allow you to quickly update multiple listings with similar shipping
costs (you can create separate Shipping Profiles for EACH of the different types of
items you sell). Here is Etsy's instructions for creating shipping profiles (easy to
do!)
www.etsy.com/help/article/190

Offering Discounts On Multiple Item Purchases

When setting up a “% off” coupon code, you have the option of setting a
minimum “purchase amount”. This encourages people to buy multiple items or
higher priced items so they can get the volume discount!

Another simple way to encourage multiple item purchases is to create separate

listings offering “bundles” of items at reduced pricing. For example, suppose you
offer 4 listings, each offering an Erte art print at $8.00, you could set up a 5 th
listing offering the 4 items bundled together at a reduced rate (say $24). If they
buy each item separate, the 4 items would cost $32...but by buying the 'bundle'
offering, they get a lower price of $24 (it's like getting one of the 4 prints free!).

Another Opportunity To Connect With Your Customers -

Creating Your SHOP ANNOUNCEMENT:
Now that your shop is set up and ready to go, you just need to write your “shop
announcement”. Here is some excellent info that tells you how to create your
shop announcement: https://www.etsy.com/help/article/167.

71
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Your shop announcement is yet another tool the Etsy website provides for you
to help you connect with your store visitors. It consists of a small window of text
that appears at the top of your shop page, that shows as a 'pop up' when
someone first lands on your Etsy store (see screenshot below).

You can edit and use your announcement to alert shoppers to important
information like a sale or if you are away on vacation. However, you can (and
should!) use it for MORE than that. With your announcement, the idea is to
communicate to your customers that you understand them and their
passions (and that you’re the person who can meet help them fulfill
those passions).

You can even use your Etsy Shop Announcement to announce a limited time
sales event! Here is a great page about how to create a variety of sales events!
(scroll down for info links on each specific type of sale!).

Keep your shop announcement brief but engaging. You can use humor if it fits
your niche, or just go with something that captures your visitors' interest (that is
consistent with your brand). Alternately, your shop announcement can simply be
a briefer version of your about me page, but make sure it captures attention!

You can also include a “hook” in your shop announcement...something like...

“See our 2 for 1 sale below”, or “be sure to get your coupon below”.

You might even choose to restate your guarantee here. “all items are fully
guaranteed to YOUR satisfaction or we refund you 100%”.

72
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

You can (and should) also use the first 140 characters of your shop
announcement for SEO purposes. Fill that space up with keywords about what
you offer in your shop (so your store has a better chance of ranking on Google).

In the next section, we will reveal simple ways you can promote your Etsy store
and product listings both within Etsy's website, AND outside Etsy's website.

Section II - It's PAYDAY time!

So now we've reached the point where we've got some awesome items listed, and
we have a dynamite looking Etsy store. Excellent!

Now it's PAYDAY time! This section will cover some super simple ways to
PROMOTE your listings to BUYERS (both on Etsy itself, as well as offsite too).

Promoting Your Listings Within Etsy Itself (Easy & Fun!)

Use Specific Keywords And Keyword Phrases That Will Get Your Listings
FOUND! Earlier above, we mention that we need to make good use of keywords
and keyword phrases in our listings (so we can be found!). This isn't as daunting
as it seems.

How do we know what keywords to use?...

1) Look at other sellers' similar successful listings – Look for keywords in their
titles, descriptions, etc.

2) Enter those keywords into Etsy's search bar and look at what Etsy suggests
(as said previously, these suggestions represent the most popularly
searched variations of your main keyword).

3) Enter those SAME keywords (or KW phrases) into Google's search bar and
look at what Google suggests (to help your listings appear on Google
searches as well as Etsy searches).

4) Vary your KW phrases in each listing title (Google likes variety).

5) Make full use of “tags” (see below)

73
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

How To Use “Tags” To Attract Buyers

Tags are keywords or keyword phrases (that you add to your listing) that help
describe and classify your item. Etsy matches your tags with shoppers' searches
to help generate relevant search results.

To see any competitor's “tags”, look at the phrases listed under “Related to this
item” at the bottom of the listing.

Etsy has 2 kinds of tags...“basic tags” and “materials tags”. You are allowed to
have up to 13 tags each (26 tags total).

Here are 2 pages on Etsy's website and blog respectively that can assist you with
“tags” and keywords:

www.etsy.com/help/article/69
blog.etsy.com/en/2012/how-to-get-found-in-search/

Power Seller Tip: In your tags list, include a tag phrase which is the first 2 or 3
words of your shop title (i.e. if you are selling vintage Erte prints, you want to
make sure at least one of your tags is “vintage Erte prints”). Where possible,
make that the first 3 words of your “product title” as well.

Later we will cover how to use your “Etsy stats page” to evaluate and continually
improve the effectiveness of your tags (so even more shoppers can find you!).

Power Seller Tip: Always use PHRASES for your tags (3 words of more) and
DON'T use single words. Why? 2 reasons... 1) Etsy ranks your listing according
to your tags...one word tags will have so much competition, the chances of YOUR
listing appearing are “slim to none”. 2) Multi-word phrases give you MORE than
one chance to rank in Etsy searches.

For example, suppose you are selling handmade Stirling silver heart earrings. If
one of your tags is “silver”, this will be much too general to rank (i.e. a Kazillion
products would result from the word “silver”). “Stirling silver heart earrings” is
much more specific and thus easier to rank for (i.e. fewer competing products).

ALSO, “Stirling silver heart earrings” would rank for many related phrases
including “heart earrings”, “Stirling silver earrings”, “Stirling silver heart” etc. As
well, the phrase “Stirling silver heart earrings” would rank for each single word

74
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

“Stirling”, “silver”, “heart”, and “earrings”.

Etsy allows you 20 characters for EACH “tag”, so use as close to this maximum as
you can so you rank for as many popular keyword phrase variations as possible!

To create a list of successful tag phrases...

1) Check what phrases competitors in your niche are using
2) Get similar popular phrases from Etsy's suggested search phrases (by
entering potential tag phrases into the Etsy search bar).
3) See what 'results' come up and also take note of HOW MANY results come
up. IDEALLY you want to find popular search phrases (in your niche) where
not many “results” show up.

Power Seller Tip: Under “Related to this item” at the bottom of any listing,
each phrase (tag) is actually a LINK that shows the search results for THAT tag.
Find other successful sellers in your niche and click on each of their tags and see
if THEIR listing shows on the 1st page. If it does, there's a good chance YOU can
place in the 1st page using that tag phrase (or a close variation of that tag
phrase). If Etsy also suggests that phrase when you start to type it in (indicating
it's a popular search phrase) then you have a potentially powerful winning tag
phrase!

Optimizing your tags is an ongoing process... After your listing(s) have been
up for awhile, click on your OWN tags and see if your listing appears on the 1 st
page of the search results. If it does, great! Keep that phrase! For phrases that
you DON'T rank for, change them. Do this until you have ALL popularly searched
phrases as tags that are ranking YOU on the 1st page of Etsy's results. This
ALONE can bring you good steady highly targeted traffic to your listings!

How To Title Your Listings So They Can Be Found!

We've already talked about how to create enticing listing titles. However, listing
titles are also a prime spot to place your best KW phrases (so your listings show
up in search results!).

You want to insert these phrases so the title reads in a “natural” way, and yet
contains as many good keyword phrases as possible. Your most important KW
phrases should appear at the beginning of the title. Everything we said about
“tags” above applies to KW phrases in your listing title also.

75
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Find popularly searched keywords and keyword phrases using Etsy's keyword
suggestion function (and by looking at competitors' keywords), and use them in
your titles. REMEMBER that Etsy titles can contain up to 140 characters... USE
THEM ALL!

Power Seller Tip: Variations of your most important KW phrases should also
appear in the 1st paragraph of your product description.

How To Get Your Listings Ranked On Google For Even More Sales!
Everything we've said above about inserting keywords and tags above applies for
Google searches too! However, here are some additional points to keep in
mind...

1) Google will show the first 70 characters or so of your listing titles. MAKE
THESE COUNT. Include your main (best) KW phrases in these first 70
characters AND make it enticing! Words like, “+ Coupon”, “35% off”, “free
shipping”, “guaranteed”, etc. will entice Google searchers to click on YOUR
link over the competition.

2) Google likes VARIETY. Make each listing title and 1st paragraph of your
product description UNIQUE in wording.

3) TWO things that will help your listings rank in Google are Backlinks &
Social Engagement. You can get BOTH by promoting your Etsy store and
listings on places like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest etc. (we cover this a bit
later).

4) Internal links will also help you get found in Google (“internal links” are
links within your listing that lead to other places WITHIN the Etsy website).
Internal links allowed by Etsy are as follows:

You can have...

- links to other items in your shop
- links to product sections in your shop
- links to your home page
- links to an Etsy search for similar items

76
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

I would have links to the 1st three above where possible but NOT the 4th (we don't
want to send our buyer away from us and into the hands of competitors!).

tags, and etc. HOWEVER, Etsy also has a number of on site 'social tools' too that
can be used to great advantage!

These include Etsy teams, and Etsy favorites. How to use each of these to your
advantage is covered below.

Etsy Teams - How To Use Them To Promote Your Store

Etsy Teams represent yet another social feature on Etsy that you can use to
great advantage. With “Teams”, you can connect and even collaborate with other
members (who have interests common to your own).
Shoppers can browse Teams by theme or location to find shops that might
interest them.
It’s easy to join an existing team (or create a new one!) where you can share
information about running a business in your area, get advice from experienced
members, share ideas, etc.
Team members can stay in touch by signing up for team digest emails, which are
daily emails that include a team's latest discussions.
Each team moderates itself. Every team has a captain, and that captain may
appoint one or more 'leaders' to help moderate and run the team.

In summary, Teams are a great way to “network” on Etsy. By searching and

joining the right Teams, you can learn lots, keep up to date, and share profitable
ideas!

Here is a terrific article on how to seek out ETSY teams that are most helpful to
YOU. Searching out teams and joining/participating with them can bring you
considerable traffic!

Team Tags:
“Team Tags” are simply 'tags' that belong to a specific team (such tags must
include the word “team” in them). Here is some good info on “Team Tags” on
Etsy's site (including how to use them): https://www.etsy.com/help/article/358.

A team tag CANNOT be used unless you are a member of that team! However if
you are on a team and they have a popular Team Tag (related to your niche!!),
consider using it to get yourself more traffic!

How To Get TONS Of Etsy Favorites From People

Another social function on Etsy is that people can “follow” you and “favorite” your
items. Obviously, the MORE of these you get, the better known your shop
becomes!

“Followers” will see your Etsy activity in their 'activity feed'.

The key to getting lots of people picking YOUR items as 'favorites' is to...

1) Follow people – When you 'follow' someone, they will often follow you
back AND your followers will often 'favorite' your items too!

2) Favorite other people's items – People whose items you favorite will
often favorite your items in return!

78
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

In other words, we get 'followers' by following others AND we get 'favorites' by

'favoriting' others.

Power Seller Tip: Be selective in who you follow. Follow only people who have
1000+ favorites (several thousand favorites is even better!). Why?

1) Because these are the people who (by definition) are more active on Etsy
and most likely to return the favor and follow/favorite YOU.

2) Etsy limits the maximum # of people you can follow (1080), so you want to
follow people that will give you maximum benefit and UN-follow people who
are providing only minimal benefit.

Here is an excellent short video that explains how to build your followers and
received favorites into the THOUSANDS.

The video also talks about what to look for in your “Etsy Stats” page to help you
maximize your store/listings' exposure.

We talk about your Etsy store “stats” in the next section.

Using Your “Etsy Store Stats Page” To MAXIMUM Advantage

Your Etsy store stats page is a wealth of precise and handy information. To
view your stats page, sign in and go to Your Shop > Shop Stats. Here is Etsy's
page that tells you all about your stats page.

The three MOST IMPORTANT things your “shop stats” show you are...
• Your TOP Traffic sources from both within Etsy and outside Etsy
• Your TOP 12 Keyword phrases
• Pages Viewed
You can select the 'time period' for these stats (today only, last 30 days, etc.). I
like to look at the stats for the last 30 days to get an 'average' performance for
the above three groups of data. This allows you to improve your listings by
incorporating the best keywords (and dropping poor keywords).

You can also go to your least viewed pages and attempt to improve them. You
can also identify poorly performing listings and try to improve them (or replace
them with something more popular).

79
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

And by knowing your best traffic sources, you can capitalize on your successes.
For example, if you notice a lot of your traffic is coming from a certain blog, go
look at it and study it. See if you can duplicate the success on similar blogs.
Better yet, write the blog owner and thank them for their kind support. Ask if
there is anything you can do to help them. Build a relationship with them. Then
ask them if it would be permissible for you to let them know when you post new
items or have a sale that the owner could pass onto their blog readers.

You could even offer to give the blog owner a series of exclusive coupons for their
readers! (the blog owner becomes a hero, you become a hero, and the blog
readers benefit – it's a win-win-win!).

Here are two excellent online articles that show you how to use your stats data to
best advantage: https://www.etsy.com/seller-handbook/article/five-shop-stats-

In the next section, we will talk about some effective ways to promote your Etsy
shop OFF Etsy's site.

Promoting Your Etsy Store “Off Site”

One of the biggest mistakes Etsy sellers make is failing to promote their Etsy
store(s)/listings OUTSIDE of Etsy! And this is a shame because it's simple to do!

In the following sections, we are going to discuss how to use Facebook to create
buzz and bring in additional buyer traffic to your Etsy store items.

We will include a discussion on how to incorporate an email opt-in form

into your FB fan page – Having an email newsletter is a great way to keep you
in touch with your existing customers and encourage repeat sales (and, as we
shall see, you can set this up for FREE!).
What's nice aboutFacebook as a promotion vehicle is that it integrates with your
Etsy store (and also your email marketing) really well! You can easily cross
promote among FB, your email broadcasts, and your Etsy store. For example, you
can post your best Etsy store pics right onto your Facebook fan page. You can use
your Etsy About page to draw people to your FB fan page where they can sign up
for your email newsletter. Your email can draw people to new or featured items on

80
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

your Etsy store, and so on.... (we cover all these things in detail below).

Power Seller Tip: At 1st glance, it may seem like we'd have to come up with a
lot of 'content' to keep all of the above “interesting & enticing” but it really
doesn't take much. Etsy is dominated by great photos you can share on FB, as
well as share in your emails.

You can write 3-4 enticing posts to go with 3-4 images posted on FB (linked to
your listings), and then send an email with 3-4 enticing headlines which are links
to the posts on FB lus more links to your Etsy store items.

The point is, though you DON'T want to “copy your content” from FB to email
word for word, you don't need to create completely different content for each
communication format either!

Getting Repeat Sales – Why Email Marketing Is A Must

& How You Can Easily Implement It Using FREE Tools
(No Technical Skills Or Website Needed!)
Having and growing an Email Subscriber List (or lists!) is very important. It's
one of the best ways to generate repeat sales, retain loyal customers, and gain
new customers.

Having an email subscriber list of your Etsy followers and customers is also a
great way to differentiate yourself from the competition AND position yourself as
a true expert in your niche. The increased potential profits and repeat sales
make having an email list a must.

Even if you do ZERO external marketing of your Etsy shop, EMAIL maximizes
profits of existing customers, maximizes the chances of getting NEW customers,
and increases customer loyalty.

BUT the most important reason to have and grow an email subscriber list (or
lists!) is this... It's the ONLY online “property” (or “asset”) that is truly
YOURS.

“What?!?”, you gasp, “But isn't my Etsy store an asset?”. YES it is! BUT Etsy could
change the rules tomorrow and put you out of business, or erroneously shut down
your shop if they think you are in violation of their TOS (even if you're Innocent!).

81
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Now don't panic... I don't think for a nanosecond that Etsy would actually do that!
BUT it illustrates the point that although your Etsy shop (or shops) is/are an
asset, they're not truly under your ultimate control. Your email list IS!

Similarly, your FB fan pages, Pinterest boards, Twitter account, etc. are ALL
ultimately under the control of the owners of those online properties and subject
to rule changes anytime (which in a worse case scenario could shut you down).
Even your blog or website can be shut down by your web host OR a Google
change in rules can destroy all your organic traffic overnight.

Again I don't think these things will happen so don't get bummed out. I'm just
making the point that an email subscriber list is 100% YOURS and no one can
take that asset away from you.

So get yourself set up to capture emails! (this is not as hard as it sounds AND I'll
even show you how you can set this up for FREE!).

You can place enticing email opt-in forms on your FB fan page(s) and/or your
blog. You can place 'calls to action' (with a link to your opt-in form) on your Etsy
About Me Page, or even in your Shop Announcement) asking people to
subscribe to your Etsy Shop Newsletter.

Come up with an “incentive” to get people to join your list. You could offer a 15%
coupon, digital download, or even a free product... You could offer a buy 2 get 1
free deal! Or offer 15% off all future purchases as long as they are subscribed!

One of the BEST places to insert these incentives is in your Etsy “Shop
Announcement”. HOWEVER, the only 'links' that Etsy allows in shop
announcements are links to ETSY pages only. SO, place a link in your
announcement that goes to your “About Page” (and place a link in turn onto your
“About Page” that THEN goes to your opt-in page).

For example, suppose you place an email newsletter opt-in form on your FB fan
page (simple to do). Your 'call to action' in your Etsy shop announcement might
say something like...

“Get free shipping on your next purchase! Plus notification of new products and
*exclusive special deals*! SEE MY ABOUT PAGE [link to About page] to Sign up
for my shop newsletter on my Facebook page [link to About page].

82
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

The “links” from your announcement would lead to your About Page on Etsy
which in turn has your link to your FB page opt-in form!

Also add a call to action to all of your listing descriptions (preferably below your
intro paragraphs about the item, so it doesn’t look spammy). It could simply say,
“see my 'About Page' for details on getting a 15% discount”.

Then on your About Page you could say something like... “Subscribe to my shop
newsletter and get your lifetime 15% discount on all current and future
purchases! Plus notification of new products and *exclusive special deals*!
[external link to your FB opt-in form].

Just remember to offer VALUE. Hook your Etsy visitor first with stunning
products and descriptions and/or potential exclusive discounts... THEN offer your
email subscription option.

Other Places To Snag Subscribers: If you send your customers a message

letting them know when their order is shipped (and you should), close your brief
message with the same call to action as your About Me page above.

Anywhere you can place this (or similar) call to action to subscribe to your Shop
newsletter, do it! (for example, in your Web 2.0 profiles, on your invoices &
stationary, on or in your packaging etc).

What To Send To Your List:

At least 1X per month (and as often as 2X's a week)... send out your newsletter.
Plan out your messages in a digital day planner... With an email
autoresponder (covered below), you can have “automatically scheduled”
messages or just manually blast messages (your choice).

Always provide value in your emails. Your email can include some or all of
the following...

– Announcement of newly added products

– Specials of the month/week
– Announcement of a sale or sales event
– Exclusive coupons
– How to info (related to your niche)

83
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

– Product care info

– fashion tips, decor tips (as applicable)
– Introduction to [product name] collecting
– Gift ideas (especially around upcoming holidays)
– Product reviews
– Links to other (non-competing) Etsy shops you think your subscribers will
appreciate
– Links to free resources, news, or videos (related to your niche)

...and more

You should also make your emails a 2 way relationship inviting feedback,
comments, and questions from your readers.

Don't be afraid to show some personality too! Don't be 'all business'...include

some “fun” things in your emails too such as humorous stories or pics, cute
heartwarming stories or pics, etc.

Your email newsletters can also include links to your blog, FB fan pages, or even
You Tube videos (your own, if you make them, or other people's vids too).

Power Seller Tip: Emails can (depending on niche) also promote related affiliate
products in addition to your Etsy products!

Power Seller Tip: You can use the above email content ideas to ALSO generate
content for your other Web 2.0 pages (FB, Twitter, blog, Pinterest, etc.). Just as
you plan out your email messages in a day planner, plan out your posts to all
platforms in a day planner too!

Power Seller Tip: Both Aweber and Mail Chimp (both of which I have used)
allow you to set up email templates so you can insert both text links and image
links into your emails. Use your Etsy shop header as the header in your emails
and have 4-6 image/text links to “featured products” in your store. DON'T make
your email a “sales catalog”...always include useful & fun content. BUT there's no
harm having a few store links mixed in for your customers' convenience!

Both Aweber and Mail Chimp have lots of info and resources on their sites that
allow you to create and customize attractive opt-in forms too! (with no technical
knowledge). ALSO, Mail Chimp is FREE if you have less than 2000 subscribers.

How To Create Opt-In Pages:

There are several simple options for you to create Opt-In pages. If you don't have
a website or blog, that's OK! Both Aweber and Mail Chimp allow you to create
custom opt-in pages that are hosted on their servers. Both sites have instructions
on how to do this (or just Google it).

If you do have a website, blog or web 2.0 page, you can create your opt-in form
on Aweber or Mail Chimp and it will give you the html code to copy and paste into
your web page!

With Kompozer (mentioned above) you can create opt-in pages from free
templates available online (just Google “free squeeze page templates”). If you

How To Use FB Fan Page(s) To Reach Tons More Customers Faster

(Easier Than You Think!)
If you have NO OTHER social media platform, Facebook should be your first. It's
extremely popular, and the platform most familiar to most people. We want to
set up a fan page dedicated to our Etsy niche.

NOTE: A “fan page” is simply a Facebook “business” page that you set up
“independent” of your personal Facebook page (promoting your business(es) on
your personal FB page is against Facebook's TOS – businesses are meant to be
promoted on separate fan pages).

Your FB fan page(s) and personal page are on the same FB account but the pages
are totally separate and distinct. Your FB friends never see your fan pages and
your fans never see your personal page (unless you want them too). Here is a
video that explains “FB business pages” versus “FB personal pages” more fully.

Setting Up Your FB Fan Page:

To set up your FB fan page, you will need 2 images...

1) You'll need a “cover photo” (which needs to be 851px wide X 315px high).
This is the large image that will appear at the top of your FB fan page much
like a header graphic appears on a website.

85
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

2) You'll also need “profile picture” at 170 X 170 (on Smartphones, it will
display at 128 X 128).

The graphic below, illustrates Facebook's exact placement of these two elements.

You can use a free online tool called Canva to easily create a beautiful FB cover
graphic in minutes (instructions are right on the page and there are plenty of
online video tutorials if you need more help. HERE is a terrific page that shows
you how to create awesome FB cover photos!

Cover Photo Rules: UPDATED!

It used to be that FB covers couldn't contain more than 20% text...FB now
doesn't seem to be 'enforcing' that rule. However to be safe, we recommend you
still keep your graphic highly visual with minimal text (this looks better anyway!).

It ALSO used to be that having a website address in the graphic was “forboden”.
As well, “calls to action” were also banned!

Now both are allowed! So for example, you can now have a “Visit My Etsy Shop
Here: etsy.com/shop/[your-shop-name]”. Here is a good article explaining
these relatively recent changes in more detail:

How To Create A Professional FB Fan Page In Just 5 Minutes:

If you've never set up a FB fan page before, don't worry... It's a simple matter.
Just log into your personal Facebook page. In the upper right hand corner you'll
see a little white, downward pointing triangle that, when clicked, opens a drop
down menu. “Create Page” is one of the options – click on it.

Alternately, you can log into your FB home page, open a second tab in your
browser and just Google “create facebook page” and select the top search result.
Either way, you'll end up on a page (like the one shown below), which gives you 6
types of fan pages to choose from. For example, if the page is for a local
business, you'd select the upper left choice, “Local Business Or Place”...If you
were an artist, band member or celebrity, you'd pick lower left, “Artist, Band or
Celebrity”.

87
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

In OUR case (selling online) we'd select the upper right option, “Brand or
Product” (shown by the red circle and arrow in the screenshot above).
Then just follow the on page directions...simple!

You can certainly have multiple fan pages too (so you can serve more than one
niche). Navigating from your FB profile page (personal page) to your fan page(s)
(business page(s)) and back again is a simple matter. To get to any one of your
fan pages, start by logging into your personal FB profile/page.

In the upper right hand side of the screen (on the Facebook bar) you will see a

88

tiny faint downward pointing triangle (the same one as before). Clicking on it
opens the same drop down menu as before (with options such as creating a new
fan page (create a page), etc. The TOP part of this drop down menu (where it
says, “Use Facebook as:”) lists all your fan pages (2 in this example). Just click
on the page you want to switch to.

It's that simple! Of course once there, you can copy the URL so you have the
actual page link. To switch back to your personal page, click on the same
white triangle to get to the same drop down menu and click on your personal
page. And your back!

What To Post On Your Fan Page:

FB is very interactive and so this is what fans expect! Posts that just “announce”
something aren't nearly as effective as posts that invite the fan to interact or
express an opinion.

For example, instead of saying, “Look at this”, say something like “I Love this!
Like & Share if you agree!”. The latter example gets interest, AND has a “call to
action” for people to 'like' & 'share'. Also, on FB, always post an interesting and
eye catching image with your post. 'Text only' posts tend to get ignored...FB has
become very visual!

Also, don't just post your own products...post other interesting items too!
Examples of good posts include things like...
– Check this out. It made me laugh so hard – Like & share if you laugh too!
– Look what I found! – beautifully done ____ . Like & share if you agree
– Which of these do you like better? Like & share so your friends can vote too
– Crazy designs...What's your opinion on these?
– When do you find time to ________ ? Like & share
– What are your favorite ________ ? Like & share
– Find out how to.... (or “this video shows you how to...”) Share if you like!
– facebook event - “Hey, this weekend all my Etsy art prints are 25% off
(browsing is free!)– share if you like!”

Notice in all of the above, we only have ONE post actually directly promoting our
Etsy store. This is the key to making effective use of social media. Be
SOCIAL!

Picture it this way... Suppose you owned a “brick and mortar” business that sold
'candles' and you went to a party... a social gathering of residents from the local
community. Would you just walk up to people and say, “Hi, I own an awesome
candle shop! You should look at my candles!”. How long do you think it would
take before nobody was talking to you?

Instead you'd likely engage people in fun & interesting “non business”
conversation, and, after building a likable rapport, mention your shop in passing
(along with an enticement to go see it).

And so it is on FB (and any social media)... Follow what I like to call the “80/20”
rule... “Engage” your audience 80% of the time, “promote” to them 20%
of the time.

90
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Mix up your posts & include video. Post a good amount (where possible) of
interesting videos related to your niche. Pick videos that are inspiring, humorous,
educational, and trigger emotions. Say something like, “ Wow! I just found this
very cool 2 min. video about _____ – like and share if you agree it's the best!”.
Be SPECIFIC in your descriptions or people won't click.

Here are good instructions on how to embed a video onto any of your FB
pages.

working well for you and which are a waste of your time.

Another option that FB provides is the ability to create “events”!

FB events can include 'sales events', 'how to events', 'discussion events', 'video
events' etc.

Here is a great video explaining the simple process of creating a FB event.

And Here's a great video explaining how to create a REPEAT event.

And finally, here is Facebook's page fully explaining how to create and edit
“events”.Creating a regular series of enticing “FB events” (and asking people to
SHARE the event) is a great way to quickly boost your fan base! (as well as retain
the fans you already have!).

Adding Optional 'Tabs' To Your FB Pages

“Facebook TABS” are additional 'pages' that you can add to your main fan page.
Tabs can include additional info pages, product review pages, disclaimer pages,
FAQ pages, etc. You can even embed your website, blog, or even your Etsy store
onto these additional pages too! They appear as additional tabs on your fan page.

TABS appear as icons on the right hand side of your fan page just below your
cover image.

“Facebook Apps” on the other hand can do all kinds of neat things. They can
connect your other social platforms (twitter, Pinterest, Youtube, etc.) to your fan
page and do other things too. APPS also appear as icons on the right hand side of
your fan page below your cover image (again, ref screenshot above and
screenshot on page 89).

The way to think of it is this... A Facebook “TAB” is itself an “app”. There are
many different Facebook “APPS” that do many different things, of which ONE type
of app is Facebook TABS.

If you find that description confusing, don't worry about it. In practical terms (for
our purposes here) you can use the two terms interchangeably and the process of
adding them to your Facebook fan page(s) is straight forward.

Here's an terrific detailed video tutorial that shows you how to create apps/tabs
for your FB fan page(s): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnGughzVGQY

92
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

You don't have to worry about adding FB Tabs (Apps) to your fan page
right away... As said earlier, Rome wasn't built in a day!... Don't get bogged
down with details. Just get your basic fan page up and running first. Add tabs
later as you see fit and as your following grows.

UPDATE! Advantage of using FB tabs: There is a big advantage to using FB

apps/tabs. Facebook doesn't like when you send people OUTSIDE of Facebook and
when you do this, Facebook severely limits your “reach” (i.e. makes sure your
posts show up in only a fraction of your followers' FB feeds)...By using
APPS/TABS, you can link your FB Fan page(s) to your Etsy shop, Twitter, Email
newsletter sign up form, etc. all WITHIN Facebook and FB won't penalize you!
You'll get tremendously increased reach... That is, many more people will see
your posts!

Let me illustrate how severely Facebook penalizes you for sending people OFF OF
Facebook... Here's a post I created on one of my FB fan pages about marketing...
The fan page has about 1300 followers. This post links directly to an email sign
up form (outside of Facebook). The red arrow at bottom shows only 16 people
reached.

In this second example on the SAME fan page, is a post promoting one of my
courses BUT there is NO LINK outside Facebook (the link to the product sales
page is inserted in the comments section, not the post).

93
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

632 people reached!... That's almost 40Xs the reach!!!

By using FB tabs & apps rather than direct links to your shop pages, email sign up
pages, Twitter page, etc., you will tremendously increase your “reach”.

Prioritizing Your FB Apps

When adding APPS to your FB fan page, you want your most important ones to
appear FIRST. For example, you would likely want your Etsy store tab to appear
first or second on your fan page.

Here are instructions that show you how to easily 're-order the sequence' of your
FB APPS/TABS.

The Twitter Goldmine & How To Access It
Once you have your Etsy FB fan page set up, the “next” most obvious web 2.0
Platform you want to utilize is Twitter. Like Facebook, Twitter is an extremely
popular (albeit different kind of) social site, and it can be a GOLDMINE for you if
you use it right. Twitter is a great platform for 'connecting' with people and a
great way to draw in additional customers.

AND Twitter now lets you post (”tweet”) PHOTOS as well as text!
Like Facebook, Twitter is very interactive. Remember to follow the “80/20” rule...

“Engage” your audience 80% of the time, “promote” to them 20% of the time.
Don't just post text and photos related to your own products. Include lots of other
cool stuff too from a variety of interesting sources (and mix your cool stuff in
occasionally).

You can use Twitter to funnel additional people to your Etsy store, FB fan page,
Blog, etc. If you don't yet have a Twitter account, you can sign up for free from
their home page here. Be sure to create a (or edit your existing) Twitter
profile in much the same way you crafted your Etsy profile so your branding is
consistent. Twitter also lets you have multiple accounts if you are targeting more
than one niche (each account must have a unique email address however) For full
info on managing multiple Twitter accounts, go here.

NOTE: Twitter recently phased out it's 'background image' option and replaced it
with the “cover image” option referenced below.

Like Facebook, Twitter offers you the options of uploading a “profile picture”
(400px sq – 2MB max) and a “header photo” (1500px w X 500px h – 5MB max)
with the “profile picture” nested in the “cover photo”.

Of course (AGAIN) you can make use of Canva to create a stunning Twitter header
photo! Here are step by step instructions: https://www.canva.com/create/twitter-headers/
Once created, here are instructions for how to install your cover image.

Your Twitter profile picture and header photo represent an excellent opportunity
to extend your Etsy branding! As well, your Twitter header image can (and
should!) present a call to action to your Twitter followers. This can be used to
funnel people to your Etsy store directly, or funnel people to your FB fan page
opt-in form or website/blog (as you wish).

97
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Personally, I like a call to action something like this...

Visit Our Facebook Page To Claim Your 15% Lifetime Discount By
Signing Up For Our FREE Deal Packed Etsy Store Newsletter!
[URL] Don't Forget To “Like” Us Too!

Instead of trying to funnel the person directly to my Etsy page (where I have just
ONE shot at making a sale), I'd rather get the person “engaged” and turn them
into a FB “fan” and/or onto my email list (where I now have MULTIPLE chances of
getting them to buy). But that's me...You may decide different and that's OK too!

You can also use FREE online imaging software (such as Pixlr) size, crop, and/or
enhance a photo and add text (there are lots of online tutorials on how to do
this). In just minutes, I converted a sample photo header from this...

into this!...

Of course this particular header is for illustration purposes only. BUT it shows how
simple it can be to create and customize a terrific Twitter cover image!

What To Tweet:
Posts on Twitter are known as 'tweets'. For ideas on WHAT to tweet, refer to the
earlier section on what to post on Facebook and as well reread the beginning of
this section on Twitter.

The CHALLENGE with Twitter is you are only allowed a LIMITED number of characters
in your tweet(s)...The maximum was 140 characters but Twitter recently DOUBLED that
to 280 per tweet. So you now have considerably more 'space' for each of your
Twitter posts but you still have to make every letter count! Think of your tweets
as mini “headlines” meant to entice the reader. Here is a useful article on how to
make the most of your limited space on Twitter (The article talks of a limit of 140
characters but is still useful even with the now granted 280 characters allowed).

Like FB, posting a question is often more effective than posting a statement. Also,
Twitter has become a LOT more 'visual' these days. Post lots of pics!

Photos can be up to 5MB and GIF, JPEG, and PNG files are accepted. Posting
photos is easy. Full written instructions are given here.

PLATINUM EDITION Bonus Chapter

Getting Retweets:
Just like on FB where people can share your post (and thus have it show up on all
of their friends' FB home pages), people on Twitter can “Retweet” your tweets!
When they do, your post goes to all of their followers!

And just like how on FB, your posts can keep getting re-shared (and potentially
go viral), your Tweets can be retweeted again and again.

IMPORTANT TIP: When any of your tweets are retweeted, Twitter automatically
inserts @yourusername into the beginning of the tweet. For tweets you think may
be retweeted, keep them to a short enough length so that when Twitter adds your
“@username” to the front, the message isn't cut off!

To see who's retweeting you (and also see other interactions) click on the
“notifications” link at the top of your Twitter home page and have a look!
Here is an excellent short article that shows you how to get LOTS of retweets (these
same ideas can help get you lots of followers too!).

99

PLATINUM EDITION Bonus Chapter

Getting Twitter Followers:
Just like on Etsy & Pinterest (Pinterest is discussed below) where you get
followers by interacting with people and engaging with them, you get followers on
Twitter by interacting with people and engaging with them also.

You'll get more Twitter followers by...

– Tweeting engaging, interesting, and useful text, photo's, and videos.
– Following others
– Retweeting others
– Publicly thanking people when they retweet or follow you.
– Etc.
As said, many of the ideas mentioned in the article link above (that shows you
how to get LOTS of retweets) can also be used to get lots of followers!

Power Seller Tip: Find out who the 'movers and shakers' are within your niche.
Keep an eye out on Etsy for other successful sellers (related to your niche but not
competing with it) who are also active on Twitter and follow them! Also keep an
eye out on Twitter for people in your niche who are trend setters and have lots of
followers (and follow them!). Look for popular FB fan pages and / or FB groups
(again related to your niche but not competing with it) who's owners are on
Twitter and follow them!

Go further than just following them...help them...praise them...thank them... and

don't be afraid to provide them some great content too gratis!

They will often begin to take notice of you and 'return the favor' by
recommending you to their followers, and / or retweeting you!

Using Twitter Hashtags:
Another way to get lots of targeted followers on Twitter is to use “Twitter
hashtags”. Remember when we used Etsy hashtags to get more people seeing our
listings? Well Twitter tags are very similar in purpose...They get more people
seeing your tweets!

A Twitter hashtag is simply a Keyword phrase (with no spaces between words)

that is preceded with the pound (#) symbol.

100
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Here is a very good article that explains Twitter hashtags and how to use them
(easy stuff).

Hashtags are searchable (in the Twitter search bar), so you can search for tags
related to your niche and get in on some productive conversations! Just
remember...80% engagement, 20% promotion.

Power Seller Tip: Consider creating your OWN hashtag(s) to attract targeted
followers to interesting, informative, entertaining, or educational conversations!

PLATINUM EDITION Bonus Chapter

Using Pinterest (& Similar Sites) To Attract Even More Hungry Buyers!
Any Etsy seller not using Pinterest to full advantage is leaving money on the
table! Realize that...

1) Pinterest now drives more traffic than Twitter, Reddit and LinkedIn
combined.

2) Like Etsy, Pinterest is a highly visual social medium.

3) Also like Etsy, Pinterest is much more popular with women then with men.
Can you say, “excellent fit”?

Many smart Etsy marketers are using Pinterest to “engage” with, and attract new
buyers they would never otherwise come in contact with. AND, with a few basic
secrets and free tools, you can be driving Pinterest traffic to YOUR Etsy store too!

Pinterest Basics - 101:

If you are unfamiliar with Pinterest, It is a site where people can save and share
their favorite online photos (called “pins” or “pinning”). People save these photos
in themed groups called “boards”.

Pinterest also has “group boards”, which are boards with more than one
contributor! Just like you can join “Teams” on Etsy, you can join 'group boards' on
Pinterest (each group board has it's own rules for joining so check them out –
choose group boards that will do the most good for your niche!).

101
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Also, like Etsy and Twitter, one can gain “followers” on Pinterest. The DIFFERENCE
is, people don't follow “you” but rather, they follow one or more of your “boards”.
This is a distinction that gives you a great advantage! You can create, have,
and maintain several “boards” in several sub-niches to attract more followers!

AND these followers are much more highly 'targeted' too!

When someone follows one of your Pinterest boards, the images in that board
show up on their Pinterest home page (referred to as their “home feed”).
Finally, just as your posts on Twitter can be “retweeted”, any image you pin to
one of your Pinterest boards can be “repinned”! (so many many people can
potentially see your pins over time).

The best way to get followers and repins is to (just like twitter), do lots
of following and repinning yourself!

Because you are using Pinterest to promote your Etsy store, you should sign up for a
Pinterest “Business account” here (free) in order to adhere to Pinterest's TOS.

Aside: You can have as many Pinterest accounts as you want, so it’s worth building
separate Pinterest profiles for each of your chosen niches (if you target more than
one niche).

There are TWO ways you can use Pinterest to advantage.

1) Make it easy (and desirable!) for people to pin (and re-pin) YOUR images
from your Etsy store, FB page, Twitter account, or blog.

2) Create, maintain, and share your OWN Pinterest boards to gain followers
and/or get repins.

We've already talked about how having great looking and interesting photos on
your Etsy store can increase sales. As well we've talked about the importance of
posting interesting photos to your Web 2.0 platforms too (FB, Twitter, etc.).

Now you can see another reason WHY this is so important! In addition to getting
people to “engage” with you on your social sites, people will also PIN your photos
to Pinterest!

EACH of these “pins” represents a backlink to the web page it came from!

102
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

SO, say people are 'pinning' photos from your FB fan page (and/or those
images are being repinned to yet other people's Pinterest feeds). ANYTIME
someone clicks on one of those pins, they get sent to YOUR FB fan page!

If people are pinning (and repinning) your Etsy store photos, other people clicking
these will arrive at your Etsy store! In other words, even if you do NOTHING with
Pinterest yourself (except make it easy and desirable for people to pin YOUR
images), Pinterest will send you traffic!!

We'll talk about how to get people to pin your photos in the section titled
“Putting It All Together – POWER SELLING By Intertwining Your Social
Sites”. Here in THIS section however, we will deal with how to create and use
your OWN Pinterest boards to attract targeted buyers.

Here's a great video showing you how to use Pinterest and create boards on
Pinterest too!

PLATINUM EDITION Bonus Chapter

What To Pin:
Just like our other social platforms, we want to follow the 80/20 rule...”Engage
80% of the time, promote 20% of the time”. In other words, don't just pin pics
from your own Etsy listings, website, and other web 2.0 pages. Pin other
interesting photos from other sources too!

Post pics that will get people to “engage”. If people enjoy your board(s) AND
enjoy where the pics take them, they are much more likely to repin your photos
AND follow your boards.

That said, there is one more KEY ingredient you need to add to
successfully drive targeted traffic from Pinterest. That is, you need people
to not just 'admire' your pics, but CLICK on them too!

There are several ways you can get an image to attract more clicks. You can...
– Add an attractive color boarder around your image
– Add enticing text
– Create an attractive infographic (Using Canva or Pixlr – mentioned
previously)
– Instead of posting a single pic, post a collage of pics as a single image

103
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Look at OTHER Pinterest boards (related to your niche) to see what creativity other
people are employing to get their images clicked.

Video posts:
Another good option is to pin an image of a video graphic that leads to an
interesting video (embedded on your website, blog, or FB fan page).

For example, suppose you are in the “vintage prints” niche (or any arts niche).
What if you pinned THIS image?

Do you think people interested in this niche (art prints) would click on such an
image? Do you think they would SHARE such an image? (By the way, the image
is clickable if you want to see the video for yourself!).
So, what if you had a Pinterest board with nothing but vids on how to care for
your rare prints? (mixed in with some attractive prints artwork). Voila!

ASIDE: I made the above graphic easily...

1) I found a good video on the subject I wanted (this would be the video you
embed on say your FB fan page).
2) I 'stopped' the video on an attractive frame that makes it clear what the
video is about and took a screen shot. Lightshot is a terrific FREE program
for taking screenshots. Here are tutorial vids on how to install and use it.
3) I then pasted the screen shot into MSPAINT and cropped and sized it, and
added the colored boarder and text (you could do similar in Pixlr).

As mentioned, You can also use MSPaint, Gimp, or Pixlr to create interesting
infographics too. Pinterest allows you to “upload” any image from your computer

104
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

and then manually enter in an Image reference link (which would be to your own
page of course!).

For example, suppose you had a short simple article on your FB fan page or blog
that explained “How To Make 'PHOTO QUALITY' Printouts of Rare Digital Images”.
You could pin the image shown below and link it to your article.

Your imagination is the only limit to how creative and innovative you can be!

TIP: For some reason, tall photo's on Pinterest get clicked more than short ones.

How To Make Sure Your Pins and Boards Are SEEN! - Optimizing Your
Image Descriptions
Just as we optimized our Etsy listings' keyword phrases so they could be found by
other Etsy members (as well as show up on Google), we can optimize our
Pinterest image descriptions so they can be found also!

As mentioned earlier, Pinterest allows you to “edit” your pin(s) to change a

description and/or change a link. Pinterest allows you 500 characters.
Use them ALL.

105
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Your descriptions should be interesting, enticing, provocative, entertaining, AND

be loaded with 'relevant' keywords and keyword phrases people in your niche are
searching (Pinterest's search bar suggests the most popular keyword phrases as
you type in a word or phrase).

Also rather than just pinning images directly, consider downloading them and
renaming the pic to include a main (relevant) KW phrase (then uploading them to
Pinterest with the new KW optimized file name).

For example, “Erte-Print-A-from-Erte-alphabet-collection.jpg” is a much better

file name than s1600erte3.jpg, as the former contains several relevant KW
phrases someone searching for the print would be looking for.

Board Titles:
Just like we want to optimize our image file names and image descriptions for
Pinterest, it behooves us to choose our “board titles” carefully too. Again we want
a title that is enticing AND contains our main keyword phrase for that theme.

To use the vintage prints niche again as an example, "Art Prints I love" is not
going to serve you as well as "Beautiful Vintage Erte Prints Alphabet Collection".

Obviously, you want to adapt the above to your specific niche but you get the
idea.

Find Out What's Trending On Pinterest:

Another good way to position yourself to get lots of traffic from Pinterest is to
keep track of what's “trending” in your niche. In late 2016, Pinterest released an
“Pinterest Explore” that shows you what is trending in various categories.

To use 'Pinterest Explore', simply log into Pinterest and click the “Explore” link in
the upper right of the screen.

...And you are taken to a page like this...

106
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

From there, you can explore what's trending in virtually any category!

Once you know what's trending, you can pin appropriate photos or consider a
whole new Pinterest board dedicated to the trend!

What You Need To Know About Pinterest Hashtags:

Just like Twitter has hashtags, so does Pinterest! But on Pinterest, hashtags work
very differently. The format is the same (#yourkeywordphrase) but hashtags
only work in ONE place on Pinterest...in the pin descriptions only.

That is, Pinterest hashtags are “clickable” only in pin descriptions. Placing
them anywhere else (in titles, in your about page, etc. is a waste of time). That
said, realize that when someone clicks on a hashtag, Pinterest treats it as a
keyword phrase search too!

107
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

So for example, if someone clicked on the Pinterest hashtag #vintageprints, it

would return search results where the KW phrase “vintage prints” appeared in
the photo name, or in the photo description, or even in the Pin URL! (even though
these aren't tags per se but just keywords!).

The moral of the story? Placing Pinterest hashtags within your pin descriptions
isn't as effective as simply placing good KW phrases there (as well as in your
titles, about page, etc. IN FACT, placing hashtags in your pin descriptions can
have a NEGATIVE EFFECT!

Since Pinterest hashtags are “clickable” it serves as a way people can lose
your photo! They get distracted by the hashtag, and click on it bringing up a
whole new set of search results in place of your photo and thus you've lost them!

After someone successfully finds one of your images, you DON'T want to
provide them a tempting and easy way (via a hashtag) to leave!!

The only possible exception to this would be if you could come up with a unique
and enticing hashtag that only returned search results for YOUR images only! And
then placed said hashtag into ALL of your pin descriptions. Something like
#morevintageprintsfromyourname or some such.

The best and simplest way (at the time of this writing) to use Pinterest
hashtags to best advantage is to not use them, but use the equivalent
KW phrases instead!

Here's a good article on how to get your images showing up in Pinterest search
results.

PLATINUM EDITION Bonus Chapter

How To Find Good Pinterest Keyword Phrases:
From Etsy KW suggestions and Google KW suggestions (given when you enter
search terms into their respective search boxes), you can get a pretty good idea
of which KW phrases are popular in your niche.

Pinterest ALSO has “keyword suggestion” functionality on their search bar too.
USE THIS!

Start entering KW search phrases into Pinterest and see what kind of results

108
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

come up. Are these results in YOUR niche? If so, than you have a potentially good
KW phrase! Click on some of the Pinterest results (particularly the ones near the
TOP of the search results) to see where those KW phrases are showing up! (In
titles? In Pin descriptions? In the pin's URL's?). Consider creating a a keyword
swipe file!

Later we will talk about how to track and improve your Pinterest and other social
media keyword results (to find out which KW phrases are working and which you
can dump and replace). HOWEVER, even without 'tracking', you can make a
pretty darn good “first approximation” of which keywords are best by studying
other people in your niche per above.

Using Other Sites Similar To Pinterest:
Because of Pinterest's meteoric success, many other sites have followed in their
footsteps, or re-adapted themselves to look more “Pinterest-like”. There are over
a dozen (perhaps dozenS) of such sites. However, at this time, there is just 1
other “photo” site highly worthy of your time... Wanelo.

109
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Wanelois a 'condensed spelling' of the phrase “Want Need Love” and like
Pinterest, it features shared photos BUT the difference is the photos are of
products actually for sale! What a perfect fit for Etsy sellers!

Getting your Etsy store on Wanelo is very simple...

1) Open an account and create your bio (upload a picture of yourself too)
much like you did when you opened your Etsy shop.

2) Go to your Etsy shop and select one of your items – Copy the link to that
item.

3) Click the “POST” button at the top of your Wanelo page and paste in your
item link.

4) This will bring up a picture of your product, the title, and a box to
comment in. In the comment box, be sure to include tags for your
product.

Wanelo will then have you choose a category. If none of them exactly
matches your product, choose the category that is the closest fit and click
the Save button.

Once you've uploaded an item, (or once anybody has uploaded one of your items)
to Wanelo, you need to “claim your store”. This is simple to do! Here are
complete instructions on how to do that. If you have any difficulties, you can
also contact Wanelo by email for 'verification' that this is YOUR Etsy store.

To Blog Or Not To Blog, That Is The Question
OK so now you've created some buzz with your FB fan page/Wanelo Store,
Tapped into Twitter for more sales, created some awesome looking Pinterest
boards, and even incorporated an informative Etsy Shop Email Newsletter
into your Etsy marketing! Great job!

Even if you've only managed to do just some of the above, pat yourself on the
back!

Now the question that begs to be answered is, “Do I need a blog/website?”.
Thus the title of this section, which borrows from Hamlet's greatest soliloquy.

The short answer is, yes there are advantages to having a blog and/or website
to help promote your Etsy store. You can link to it from your emails, FB page(s),
Etsy About page, Twitter posts, etc. and it gives you an air of “authority” in your
niche.

AND, if you are already producing content and scheduling posts for your FB,
Twitter, and Pinterest sites, it doesn't take much more to include posting to a
blog!

That said, don't let the LACK of a website or blog stop you from taking action,
and building an Etsy store (or stores!) right away!

This section will lay out your options, and list some good tutorials, and resources
for you for 'if and when' you are ready to build a Blog (both low cost AND free
options are covered).

PLATINUM EDITION Bonus Chapter

Blogging Simplified:
When it comes to creating a blog (to support and promote your Etsy site), you
have 2 options...

Option 1 – Create a Blogger Blog (free option)

Option 2 – Create a hosted Word Press Site (low cost option, but I'll show
you a free option too).

111
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

The advantage of option 1 is it's simple and free. However the disadvantage is
you are at the mercy of Blogger who can unilaterally shut down your account at
anytime if they feel you have violated any of their TOS (even if you're innocent!).

The advantage of option 2 is Word Press has become a widely known, popular,
and broadly supported platform for hosted blogs/websites. It enjoys a wide array
of available “plug-ins” (many of which are free) that can add tons of versatility
and function to websites.

However, the possible disadvantage is it requires web hosting, of which costs start
at $5-$9 per month depending on the plan.

IF you want all of the advantages of using Word Press WITHOUT paying anything
for hosting, THREE free hosting options for you are Byethost, 000Webhost, or
Freehostia (just Google them). All 3 allow the installation of WordPress too!

You can always also get a domain name and forward it to your blog so it looks
more like a website URL (rather than a free Blogger site or a free web host. ALSO,
having your own domain name (with forwarding) allows you to, if you ever switch
platforms, just re-forward your existing domain to the new site.

You can find instructions on how to forward any domain name on the site where
you purchased your domain name(s). Here are 2 such sets of instructions.

Domain Name Forwarding Instructions On Godaddy

Domain Name Forwarding Instructions On NameCheap

Always choose the “with masking” option (so your domain name is all people see
when they are forwarded to your blog).

There are TONS of very good WP Tutorial videos out there. Here's one of the
BEST: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gPd9soZEU4 … I like this one
because 1) It's updated and the author continues to update their videos year to

video to make everything super easy, and 3) He covers all aspects including
getting and setting up web hosting cheap and installing Wordpress (super
simple). 4) I also like that he uses BlueHost (which I love) for his hosting and
Bluehost is who I use also. 5) BEST OF ALL, the narrator offers FREE SUPPORT if
you have any questions!!

ALSO, this same narrator has another terrific video that reveals the 5 “must-

Putting It All Together – POWER SELLING By
Intertwining Your Social Sites
The real “power” of using Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest to promote your
Etsy items lies in TWO things...

1) “interconnecting” them all!

2) Making it super easy for people to SHARE your stuff on ALL these platforms!

They are both simple to do but let's deal with the second one first since it is the
easiest to implement.

114
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE that your web/blog pages, etc. are set up so that
people can easily share your page(s) on popular social sites such as Facebook,
Twitter, GooglePlus, LinkedIn, etc.

In a word, you should add “clickable” social site icons to your blog/website pages
that allow people to SHARE your stuff instantly and easily (this is easier to do than it
sounds).

IMPORTANT SIDE NOTE: Understand that we are talking about “social site SHARE
buttons” here. There is a DIFFERENCE between a social site SHARE button and
a social site FOLLOW ME button.

– The former allows your viewer to instantly SHARE your pages with others.
– The latter allows your visitor to FOLLOW YOU on YOUR social sites.

You can (and should!) implement BOTH kinds of icons, but here, we are talking of
social icons of the SHARING kind.

As said, adding (Facebook, Twitter etc.) SHARE icons is a simple matter...you can
just Google “how do I...” to get lots of 'how to' step by step info.

ALTERNATELY, you can just go to this excellent resource site on Hubspot!

This site gives you detailed step by step instructions for adding ALL the popular
social sharing sites' clickable icons to your page(s). As well, they show how to add
the FOLLOW ME versions of these icons too.

SIDE NOTE: Etsy automatically adds social SHARE buttons for Twitter, Pinterest,
and FB so that people can instantly tweet/pin/share ANY listing so their followers
and fans can also see it.

115

INCIDENTALLY, you can use these buttons YOURSELF to share your listings on
YOUR FB, Twitter, and Pinterest pages! Here is some good Etsy info about doing that very
thing.

Interconnecting Your FB, Twitter and Pinterest Pages:
To a large extent, we've already gotten this process off to a very good start!
For example, we have (or should have) already placed links on our Etsy About
page that lead to our FB fan page(s) and (if we have one), our blog too. We have
(or should have) our Etsy Newsletter 'opt-in form' linked to from our FB page and
also on our blog. Our Pinterest images (at least some of them) are connected to
our Etsy listings, AND other images are connected to videos or posts on our FB
and blog.

We've even embedded our ENTIRE Etsy store on FB! Good job!

Now let's get Twitter more deeply integrated with our other social platforms! Here
are instructions for integrating your Twitter and Facebook fan page so that your
your 'tweets' and 'retweets' will automatically post to your Facebook wall. Here's
a web page that reveals 6 ways to integrate Twitter with your Wordpress site.

Twitter Widgets:
There are an assortment of optional Twitter widgets available. These allow you to
embed Twitter posts (tweets) onto other web pages such as your website or blog.

If you decide that you want to do this, here is a web page explaining how.

Whether or not you decide to do this depends on your posting habits. If you are
posting on Twitter essentially the same stuff you are posting on your blog, it
might not make total sense to add a Twitter widget (as people on your blog would
simply be seeing essentially the same content duplicated).

BUT it WOULD still be a good idea to add a “Twitter follow me” icon to your blog
(with an enticing call to action) so people could still 'follow' you on Twitter.

IF however, you are posting content on Twitter, that is “in addition to”, and
“substantially different from”, the content being posted on your blog, then adding
a Twitter widget (so your blog visitors can see posts from BOTH platforms) makes
much more sense.

Choose whichever option works best for YOU, your niche, and your style.

Increasing Profits By Tracking And Improving Response:
Albert Einstein once said, “The definition of insanity is doing something over and
over again and expecting a different result”. In this section, we will cover some ways
you can 'track' (and thus steadily improve) your results (response) from your
tweets, pins, and posts so you can continually increase your profitability.

We've already talked about how to use your Etsy stats page to best advantage.

If you are incorporating an email Etsy shop newsletter in your efforts, your
autoresponder will give you stats on bounce rates, open rates, clicks, etc.

NOW we want to talk about taking things one step further with a free tool called
Google Analytics. Once you've signed up for a free GA account, you can add
“properties” to it (websites that you own or administrate). This can include your
Etsy store! Analytics then 'tracks' your site(s) so you can see where traffic is

117
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

coming from, where it is going to, in what part of the world your visitors are
living, which individual pages they are viewing and how often, how many are
repeat visitors, how long they spend on your pages and lots of other other
valuable demographics.

You can connect up to 100 “properties” to your GA account and GA is free as long
as you have less than 5 million visits per month per property.

Sites you should consider tracking with Google Analytics include...

– Your Etsy shop(s)
– Your Blog(s)/website(s)
– Your FB fan page(s)
– Your Twitter account(s)
– Any other accounts (i.e. properties) you have with significant traffic.

Here is a terrific video that shows you everything GA can track as well as how to INSTALL
GA (If you want to skip right to the installation instructions, they begin at 9 minutes 40
seconds (9:40) into the video.

Side Note: You can track how many people are pinning images from your
website/blog with Pinterest Analytics. Here is complete info on that.

Twitter also has its own Twitter Analytics which you can turn on here.
Here's a very good video showing you all you need to know about Twitter
Analytics!

“Properties”, such as your Etsy shop or blog can be added as additional

“accounts” on your Google Analytics account and GA will track them directly.

Other accounts such as Pinterest, FB, etc. can't be entered directly as an

“account”, but can still be tracked indirectly as previous videos have shown.

We won't go into any further depth here about Google Analytics, because there
are lots of online tutorials that you can Google when you're ready to learn more.
However, the previous links and videos will give you all you need to effectively
use this wonderful free tool!

Connecting Your Etsy Shop to Google Analytics:
Even if you decide to “hold off” on using GA for any of the above, I would
recommend NOT delaying on connecting your Etsy store to GA right away (It's
simple to do and of course FREE!). Just add your Etsy shop URL as “your website”
per the earlier video on GA.

In summary of the above, just remember that we want to implement some sort of
tracking on at least some of our pages so we can see what's working (and
converting) and as well see what's NOT working.

This way we can do MORE of what's working, and stop wasting our time with
what's not working.

Whether you decide to use Pinterest Analytics, Twitter Analytics, your Etsy Shop
Stats page, Google Analytics, or some combination of these free tools, tracking
people's response to your listings and posts allows you to stay informed and gives
you a road map to dramatically increased profits!

In the final (and much shorter) 3rd main section of this guide (that follows) we
will talk about the practical aspects of 'packaging and shipping' products to your
buyers.

As well, you'll get some valuable insider tips to keeping your customers
thrilled, happy, and loyal!

Section III – Packaging

& Delivery Made Simple
OK! So now you've put your Etsy shop together... You're adding new items
several times a week, getting involved in Etsy's social scene, getting followers,
favorites, creating buzz on your FB fan page, blog, Twitter, and Pinterest, and in
the midst of this, you start making sales!

Hurray! Now what??

Well, now you fulfill and ship your orders! When you get a
sale, you are notified by email (at the address you have on file
under your Etsy account settings).

Here's what to do when you make a sale... First, look up the

“order details”. You will find all of the order details in your Etsy
account by going to your shop > sold orders.

For detailed info on how to view and fulfill your Etsy orders, go here. The KEY is
to ship promptly and also communicate with your customers and keep them fully
informed. (ref next section).

Also, Here's a quick order fulfillment checklist for you.

When fulfilling sales orders, we ALSO want to do everything possible to...

1) Further impress our customer
2) Encourage repeat sales
3) DIFFERENTIATE ourselves.

We do this through our thoughtful packaging! Etsy sellers are known for
their creative packaging! You can (and should) capitalize on this. (see below).

Little Extras That Your Customers Will Love! - How “Creative Packaging”
Can Bring You Even MORE Profits!
Make your packaging unique, imaginative, and pretty. Use your packaging
to create “excitement” and “anticipation” as your customer opens it! (as well, use
your packaging to “reinforce your branding”). A product wrapped in a sheet or
two of colored tissue paper and tied with gold colored string or ribbon (all very
cheap!) can go a long way to creating excitement and producing a positive

emotional experience for your customer!

Slipping in a hand written (or calligraphy printed) card with a warm message and
a personal 'thank you' can add a very nice “individualized” touch too! (search
Google for “free calligraphy fonts” for all you need).

Check out this page on the Etsy blog for tons of very low cost DIY decorative
packaging ideas!

Communicating With Your Buyers – Head Off Problems

BEFORE They Occur
You can enhance your buyer's positive buying experience (PLUS head off any
potential problems BEFORE they occur) by COMMUNICATING PROACTIVELY with
your customer to inform and reassure them.

Here are some handy links that will help you with fulfilling orders and show you
how to use Etsy's communication tools to best advantage...

How To Mark Items As Shipped & Inform Your Buyer: www.etsy.com/help/article/374

How To Use Etsy Conversations: https://www.etsy.com/help/article/4364

Communication Is Important – Use It To Reassure Your Customer

Look at the Etsy 'buying experience' from your CUSTOMERS' point of view.
They've just taken a scary “plunge”. Without being able to hold, touch or examine
your product, they've faithfully plunked down their hard earned money and now
they are 'hoping for the best'... In short, they are apprehensive!

Will they really get their product? On time? In the condition promised? Will the
guarantee truly be no hassles?

This is where it is up to you as the seller to go the extra mile and both
inform, and REASSURE your customer that all is good.

This “reassurance” starts with your 'Message to Buyers'. This is a note that Etsy
lets you set up, that goes to your buyers immediately upon them concluding a
purchase from you (and also gets printed on your Etsy invoices if you use them).

To set up your “Message to Buyers”, click on Your “Shop link”, and then on the
"Info & Appearance" link, scroll down, and you'll see a box for "Message to

121
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Buyers". That's the message that goes on the notification email to buyers when
they make a purchase, and as said, on the Etsy invoice/receipt if you use them.

Many times people will just put a “Thank you for your order” note and leave it at
that. This is a MISSED OPPORTUNITY! Instead thank, reassure and INFORM your
customer that all is good! You might say something like...

"Thanks so much for your purchase! I ship within 24 hours (in secure sturdy
packaging). If you have any questions, problems, or concerns with your order,
please contact me immediately and I will be more than happy to remedy it or
refund you! If you are pleased with your order, please share your experience with
others by leaving feedback!"

Thanks again and all the best,

[Your Name]

P.S. For a 15% discount on all future orders, please subscribe to my shop
newsletter here [link]. As one of my premier newsletter subscribers you will get
exclusive discounts, notifications of sales events, and will be the first to know
when I list new products. The newsletter is also full of interesting fashion ideas
too! Go here [about page link] to subscribe & get your lifetime 15% discount!”

Of course you would modify the above to fit your niche and incentives.

Another juncture that presents a good opportunity for reassuring communication

is when you mark an item as shipped (to see how to mark items as shipped,
ref https://www.etsy.com/help/article/374).

When you click “Mark as Shipped” (to indicate that the order has been shipped),
you'll see a button that says “Add Shipment Information”. When you click this
button, a text box will appear. This will allow you to send a message to your
buyer!

Things to include in your shipment message are...

– A statement like, “Your order of [name of product] has been shipped! It
should arrive in 3-5 days. Enjoy!”
– A tracking number (if applicable) - Etsy currently supports comprehensive
tracking on-site for over 100 carriers worldwide.
– A reminder of your guarantee, such as, “YOU ARE FULLY PROTECTED - If
you are less than thrilled with your order for any reason, I will be glad to fix

122
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

it or refund you in full (your happiness is worth more to me than a few

dollars so I'm happy to honor my guarantee)”.
– An invitation to join your Newsletter - “If you haven't signed up for my
shop newsletter yet and locked in your 15% lifetime discount, here's the
[link] again”
– A thank you such as, “Thanks again for your order, if you have any
problems or questions, I'm always glad to help!”
– A gentle reminder to leave positive feedback such as, “I make my living on
Etsy – Your positive feedback is always greatly appreciated”.

Again adapt the above to fit your niche, situation and your incentives!

Another opportunity to inform and reassure your customer is in the order itself!
Include a personal note with your contact info in case they have any questions
and remind them again that if they are happy you always appreciate positive
feedback.

You can (at your option) also offer them a deal on their next purchase to try and
get a repeat sale! And/or remind them to sign up for your shop newsletter, and/or
invite them to your blog, FB fan page etc.

However, be selective...you want your note to be brief and personal, NOT a big
promotion piece!

You should also use Etsy's “conversation tool” (which allows you to message
other members/buyers) to best advantage. (again, for info on how to use Etsy
“conversations” (ref https://www.etsy.com/help/article/4364).

Good communication is always a necessity. However, in those rare instances

where something “goes wrong”, good communication becomes VITAL! (see
below).

Why Refunds Are Not A Bad Thing & How To Deal With Them Efficiently
If you are providing a good product, applying yourself to providing good service,
and communicating with your customers, your refund rate will be only a very tiny
% of your total sales. Don't let the odd refund distress you...it's just a 'cost of
doing business'..and that's the point... I always look at refunds as a GOOD
thing. Why? Because if I'm getting refunds, it means I'm doing a TON of
sales!!

123
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

That said, if you find you are getting a lot of refunds (very rare), figure out WHY
and address the problem...FIX it. For example, do you need to modify your
packaging to prevent in transit damage? Do you need to modify a listing
description? Is it a shipping length of time problem? These are all things that are
easy to address.

IMPORTANT TIP: Often we can lower our refund rates by simply 'managing' our
customer's “expectations” (particularly with regard to shipping times, product
condition, etc.). If your customer is expecting delivery on day 3 and the item
comes on day 4, they're frustrated...if they were expecting the item by day 5 and
they still get it on day 4, they're THRIILED! The ONLY DIFFERENCE between the
two situations is the customer's “expectation”.

Personally, I find that the best way to deal with refund requests is to simply give
the refund in full, immediately upon request. This greatly minimizes the chances
of getting negative feedback (your positive feedback is an ASSET that is worth
way more dollars than the odd refund will cost you), AND if the person does give
you a negative rating, you'll have lots of 'ammunition' to positively explain your
side of the story... Namely that you went way 'above & beyond' to please this
customer (ref next section).

How To Deal With Negative Feedback (& Turn It Into A Positive!)

Getting a negative feedback post from a disgruntled customer can suck
(especially if you have done everything possible to please that customer!).
However, don't panic...often negative feedback is fixable!

1st Option: Although rare, you can sometimes get negative feedback removed by
Etsy. Etsy has a strong policy that they DON'T get involved in buyer/seller
disputes. BUT there are exceptions as follows...

– If the negative or neutral feedback was mistakenly submitted for a different

transaction or an unrelated transaction OR
– If the feedback contains mature, profane or racist language or images OR
– If feedback contains spam, links, scripts or advertising OR
– If personal or private “identifying” information was published (for example:
a phone number, real name, email address, physical address, content of a
private Etsy Conversation, details regarding an Etsy investigation and
such).

124
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

Etsy will remove the feedback!

2nd Option: You can contact the customer and diplomatically request they
remove the feedback. You could say something like the following...

Greetings,

I would like to apologize to you. I am sincerely sorry your recent transaction with
me wasn't to your satisfaction (I have sold on Etsy for [length of time] and these
things happen only very rarely). That said, I can certainly understand your
disappointment.

I have refunded you in full [recite everything you have done to rectify problem]

I make my living on Etsy and I therefore would be very appreciative if you could
see your way clear to removing your negative feedback. Please let me know what
else you would like me to do to fix things.

Thank you for your patience. I await and appreciate your kind reply.

Most Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Modify the above to your specific situation/transaction.

Notice that the above is NOT a 'debate' with the customer, but instead 'validates'
the customer while explaining your attempts to fix the issue. You may feel that
the customer doesn't “deserve” any validation (and that may well be the case)
but we are taking the high road here and putting the welfare of our 'business'
above our personal feelings (not always easy to do but virtually always the better
course).

Etsy gives customers 60 days to change/edit their feedback.

IMPORTANT NOTE: After you “reply” to a customer's feedback (see below), the
customer is NO LONGER able to edit/change their feedback (even if it is still
within the 60 days). Thus your request for the customer to change their feedback
should come BEFORE you make any reply to their feedback!

3rd Option: If your customer is stubborn and insists on leaving their negative

125
See My Blog At Stuart-Turnbull.com For More Tips!

feedback in place, you can still “reply to it”. DO THIS, explaining everything you
did to placate the customer. When people see how unreasonable the customer
was acting in spite of everything you did to fix things, they will generally discount
the negative feedback as bogus.

For example, suppose a customer posted negative feedback that your item
arrived damaged and no refund was given. Suppose your side of the story – your
TRUE story – was this...

I was unaware of any problem with this item's shipment until I saw it here in this
feedback. The customer never contacted me to inform me that there was a
problem. Of course once I was aware, I immediately refunded her in full
(including her shipping cost) so she wasn't out one single penny. I also offered
her a replacement.

I always inspect items prior to shipping to ensure they are in pristine condition
and undamaged. I use secure packaging to ensure safe shipping. That said, the
occasional item may be damaged (very rare) by the postal services (beyond my
control). In such cases I offer a free replacement and/or full 100% refund
(customer's choice). I refund shipping at my own expense too!

In fact, in the extremely rare instance a customer is less than thrilled with their
order for any reason, I give a full and immediate 100% no hassles refund per my
guarantee (ref my comprehensive guarantee on my policies page).

In this case, the customer never informed me of any issue ahead of time but just
posted her feedback here. In spite of the fact that I refunded her in full including
shipping, she still insists on not removing or modifying her feedback.

Do you think anyone would put any 'stock' in the negative feedback after reading
your side of the story? Likely not! In FACT, people are likely NOW going to
see this feedback as a PLUS! You've just turned a negative feedback post into
a positive post.

How To Skyrocket Your Positive Feedback & Plummet Your Refund Rates!
Of course we all know that we can keep our feedback high and refund rates low
by delivering fast and as promised, by keeping our quality high, by packaging our
goods securely, and by addressing customer concerns/questions/complaints fast
and with no hassles, etc.

However, this section will give you a great insider tip that goes beyond the basics
and shows you how to truly explode your positive feedback and virtually eliminate
refunds. The secret? Give an Unannounced SURPRISE Extra...

A great way to plummet your refund rates AND get incredibly high praise and
feedback from your customers is to include an unannounced surprise bonus
in their delivery free! Give them something extra, at no cost, that they weren't
expecting! It could be a digital print (on CD) of the physical item they just
purchased (as applicable), or a second smaller print, or item accessory or even a
discount coupon, etc.

I know that depending on your product, this won't always be possible, but when
you can work it out, a valuable surprise unannounced bonus does wonders for
your goodwill!

APPENDIX A
“Etsy Plus” Optional Upgrade
(Added 2018)

Etsy introduced a new seller package upgrade in July 2018 called Etsy Plus.

Before I explain the features and costs of the new package let me stress that
this is an entirely optional upgrade – Etsy's standard seller package will remain
available with no monthly fees.

Etsy Plus benefits are;

• Advanced shop customization – customizable options for your shop

banner and featured listings area on your shop's home page
• Restock requests – shoppers who visit sold out listings can sign up to be
notified when the item is back in stock
• Discounts on custom packaging and promotional materials
• Discount off a custom URL – save money on a custom URL that redirects
to your Etsy shop
• Listing credits – 15 free listings per month ($3 value)
• Promoted Listings credit - $5 per month towards Etsy's paid advertising
service

This package of benefits costs $10 per month at the time of this writing.

Should you upgrade your seller account to Etsy Plus?

This really depends on the individual shop – if you have a fully stocked shop
and will therefore benefit from some free advertising and the free listings and
you intend to take advantage of the custom packaging discounts you may well
feel that the upgrade fee represents good value.

For new shop owners who are just starting out I would advise caution – there
is little point in advertising a shop with only a handful of items so the Promoted
Listings credit is of little value. Also, don't forget you can get 40 free listings if
you open your first shop through my special link HERE

New shop owners are probably best advised to wait until they are making
regular sales before they consider upgrading. It is possible to upgrade at any
time and also to go back to the standard (free) package at any time if you
change your mind.
