MODESTO OMISTE Y TINAJEROS THEATER

hello good afternoon everyone, I welcome you to the Villa Imperial de Potosi, my
name is Michael Hernani Moreira Vargas and I will be your tour guide, please form
a semicircle in front of me, the theater you can see is the Modesto Omiste theater,

in 1555 the Real hospital was founded on this site, and first received the name San
Bartolome Hospital, although officially it was called Vera Cruz. It occupied the
entire block and had a cemetery and chapel within it. In 1616 the Coliseo de
Comedias is built within the same lot. In 1645 construction of the church ends,
replacing the 16th century chapel. In 1687 the Coliseo de Comedias is sold. In
1725 the church dating from 1645 collapses due to torrential rains. Its
reconstruction begins under the direction of Captain Bernardo de Rojas Luna y
Saldaña. In 1753 the reconstruction comes to an end, and probably that of the
adjacent cloister as well. In 1823, during the War of Independence, the building
becomes military barracks. Its two towers are destroyed, the bells removed and
cannons installed on the roof. In 1826 Marshal Sucre hands the Bethlemite
Hospital over to the College of Science and Art, of his own creation. The hospital
changes hands and location, becoming part of the Order of San Juan de Dios. In
1850 the Belzu government decides to turn the Bethlemite Church into a theater
and immediately begins its dismantling. In 1862 it becomes a public theater, the
construction being paid through small donations made by the residents of the area,
with the help of the national government. In 1927 the balustrade is built into the
façade and the inscription “Teatro Omiste” is added, thus eliminating the “1753”
inscription. A new door is added and the lateral doors are opened. At an
undocumented date the theater becomes a cinema. Cruciform in plan, it has a
straight nave reinforced with arches, and a cupola over the transept. The façade is
framed by an arch. In 1992 its rehabilitation was addressed, with the intention of
stripping the church of the interventions subsequent, given its high deterioration
and architectural and constructive expiration, recover to the maximum all the
original stonework, lost during later works and build inside of exempt way so as not
to affect the original structures of the church a modern theater.
Currently, the Modesto Omiste y Tinajeros theater continues to operate for artistic
events.
