At the north western tip of Papua New Guinea, resides a coastal area Aitape. In
the late 20th century, the coastal land was hit by an earthquake which triggered the ocean. A
disastrous tsunami hit the coastline after producing a bombarding sound. As a result of which,
the area was engulfed by the ocean waves.
This incident took the lives of nearly 2000 innocent residents who were present at the coast
line at that time and 10,000 people went homeless. The tsunami continued for half an hour and
destroyed the coastline in this time period.
The incident stuck the governing organizations and the bodies were obliged to frame a plan for
the protection of the coastal areas from destruction in future. The agreements with the scientific
bodies were done and public awareness programs were initiated. The area was studied
carefully. Moreover, it was deduced that there were no databases available for the past events.
The investigations were carried out from the people who were the lucky survivors of the event.
The assistance of scientific teams from other countries including Japan was called and their
tsunami patterns were studied carefully.
The people, who were at first adamant to consider this as a natural disaster; gradually realized
the delicacy of situation and were trained for future events. In the tsunami of year 2020, the
demonstration of the awareness programs was visible as there was no casualty in the event.
