Ghadar Movement

Ghadar is an Urdu word which means "revolt" or "rebellion." Established in early 1913, it
was originated outside India, in Oregon and California and formalized on 1 November 1913
in San Francisco, Ghadar Party was a group of South Asian, predominantly Punjabi (and
especially Sikh) workers which had migrated to the US and Canada. The Ghadar party took
inspiration from Lala Har Dayal, who was a radical intellectual. It was the first openly
declared political struggle for the complete independence if India. The movement was
dominant among the young revolutionary Indians living abroad during the period of 1905-
1920. The young Indians were inspired by the hope of freedom, forming India a secular and
democratic republic just like the USA. The reason behind the less attention towards the
Ghadar movement can be attributed to the fact that the movement originated outside India
and was mainly a movement of Punjabi Sikh patriots.
