5 Questions
For the Internet of Research assignment, the five questions that I chose are:

1. Why do we need IoT?

2. What is the biggest risk associated with the IoT?
3. Who is going to benefit from it?
4. What do you need to regard as the most interesting use of IoT?
5. What effect will the IoT have on our daily lives?

Why do we need IoT?

Internet of things, also known as IoT, is defined by Wikipedia as a “network of physical objects that are
embedded with sensors, software, and other technologies for the purpose of connecting and
exchanging data with other devices and systems over the Internet.” (Internet of Things, 2021)

Some may argue that Internet of Things is unnecessary, but the importance and convenience of IoT has
steadily increased for industrial usage, but also for our daily routines. (Why is the Internet of Things
Important to our Everyday Lives?, 2019)

Industrial
In the industrial sector, the help of robots and mechanics has gained a lot of popularity to release the
workload on employees who are working. Robots can clearly lift and hold things longer than the average
human and this is a huge help to workers. When it comes to the help of Internet of Things, IoT allows
companies to save money labor costs, helps to reduce waste and also improves service delivery. (Why is
the Internet of Things Important to our Everyday Lives?, 2019) With the help of these three, not only are
labor costs reduced, but it also helps companies to save money when it comes to manufacturing and
delivering goods and products to customers.

As previously mentioned, robots and other mechanics are much stronger than the average human and
with the help of IoT, there is also the security of having less accidents on the work floor, which also helps
the company to save money.

Everyday Lives
When it comes to IoT in our everyday, personal lives, IoT has a countless amount of advantages that we
sometimes do not notice. The convenience that IoT brings us has an endless amount of examples: from
healthcare, driving and traffic, doing groceries, energy consumption, to wearable technology. (How
Internet of Things impact our everyday life, n.d.) The options are endless!

Health Care
With the help of IoT, advanced control of hospital resources, process optimization in patient care and
smart asset management will be enabled. Ever wish when your prescription medicine is running empty
that you did not have to take the time out of your day to call or e-mail your doctor? IoT could send a
notification to your doctor and inform them for you. (How Internet of Things impact our everyday life,
n.d.)

3
Driving and Traffic
Every time that someone enters their car and go to their destination, they risk getting into accidents or
their car breaking down. But with the guidance of IoT, driving could hypothetically become a lot safer.
Traffic lights nowadays switch between colors just after a certain time frame. But sometimes those
times are inconvenient. Imagine you have just received a green light, but there is an ambulance coming
from the opposing intersection? Not everyone can stop quick enough to get out of the ambulance’s way,
which could result in something bad. With the help of IoT, traffic lights would be able to detect when
emergency services are approaching, allowing the traffic lights to adjust to the oncoming car(s). (How
Internet of Things impact our everyday life, n.d.)

Groceries
Everyone must do their weekly check into their refrigerator to see what is needed before making the
trip to the grocery store. Nordic states that “in the future, we will see smart refrigerators that will sense
when you are running low on groceries.” Along with that, grocery stores can send reminders to
customers’ phones to add certain groceries into their cart while shopping to avoid having to take the
second trip back to the store, because we all know how annoying it is once you realize that you forgot to
get something. (How Internet of Things impact our everyday life, n.d.)

Energy Consumption
Ever been in a rush to leave the house to get somewhere and realized shortly after that you forgot to
turn off the lights in the bathroom? This will not longer be a worry, thanks to IoT. There are already
phone applications that allow you to control your electric energy without being home. With the right
appliances designed in your phone, one must simply download an app and connect the app to the house
and its appliances, and you can do things like start the heater up so that you come home to a warm
house or turn off any lights that were accidentally left on.

Wearable Technology
I think this is the most plausible form of IoT. Some examples of wearable technology are things like
Apple watches that can monitor things like your sleep cycle, heartrate and other things and hearing aids.
Wearable technology is able to connect our social media accounts and can offer ways to decrease
screen time. (How Internet of Things impact our everyday life, n.d.)

What is the biggest risk associated with the Iot?

Although there are a countless number of benefits that come with IoT, but with advantages come
disadvantages. There are three risks that may come along with the progression of IoT. These three being
a loss of privacy, the potential of becoming too reliant on IoT and possible unemployment rates that
could stem from this.

Privacy
From the previous question, you can see in examples like ones in health care and also the privacy that
might be disturbed with IoT products like smart security systems. Although many electronic devices
promise that their products are difficult to hack, it is never impossible. When it comes to healthcare
with the possible option to ask for new prescriptions, this could easily become a problem. The
prescriptions that patients receive are drugs, and there is clearly a drug problem in most countries.
There is always the chance that someone could somehow hack into their profile and have the

4
prescription stopped, or possibly sent to a different area. Profiles can also be changed to worsen or
soften the state of health of someone.

With smart security systems, like the one provided by Amazon, there has been multiple cases of security
cameras placed into the bedrooms of people’s children getting hacked by other people and speaking to
the children through the camera and watching other people’s kids. (Paul, 2020)

This is a huge risk to the safety of others.

Reliability
In today’s day and age, we are relying more and more on technology. If technology can make a task
easier, you can believe that others will be using it to make their lives easier. Things like AI and IoT are
made with the purpose to assist us in our daily lives, but there is not a 100% guarantee that everything
will go to plan. Although movies are fantasy, most things are still able to be made into a reality. Most of
the time we see things like AI and IoT in movies fail. Even in our daily lives, our technology fails us. Now
with the COVID pandemic, a majority of the world is using technology to continue with our work, school
and keeping up with our social life. Instagram and Snapchat have glitches once every couple months,
computers and laptops are constantly crashing. The more we put into our trust into electrical devices,
the more dependent we become, despite us knowing the possibility of backfires.

Unemployment
A big discussion topic when it comes to IoT and AI is the question: “will we lose our jobs to robots?” The
purpose for these devices are to assist and do the things that we do not want to do. Some tasks that will
be performed by robots are the jobs that we consider to be inconvenient or unnecessary. It is estimate
that 5% of jobs are likely to be taken over by robotics. (Doyle, 2021)

For example, people who work in construction are at risk because of the unpredictable physical labor
that is brought upon humans, meanwhile this will not affect robots because they do not require
moments of rest and hunger. (Doyle, 2021)

Who is going to benefit from it?

With disadvantages, there are also advantages. Who will benefit from the help of IoT? Sectors like
agriculture, finance and transportation and logistics will see IoT as their dream come true.

Agriculture
The agriculture industry has openly welcomed the help from IoT and AI. The agriculture industry has
made huge improvements when it comes to the assistance of technology. IoT has major benefits when it
comes to this sector. These benefits include monitoring climate conditions, agricultural drones and
greenhouse automation. (Peranzo, 2020)

Finance
IoT can help the finance industry by improving the quality of customer’s bank experience, adopting the
use of interactive credit cards and helping everyone with spending habits and indulgent behavior. You
might have also noticed the increased amounts of financial transactions through different and multiple
connected devices. (Peranzo, 2020)

5
Transportation and Logistics
Transportation and logistics will soon be loving their new co-workers. IoT has multiple benefits when it
comes to this specific sector. The IoT transportation market was reported to value at $135 billion in
2016 and is expected to see the likes of $348 billion in the year 2023. (Peranzo, 2020)

IoT will be seen as a helping hand when it comes to ensuring better safety within the work floor with
the, will improve fleet management, and save companies money along with increasing profitability
rates. (Peranzo, 2020)

What shouldn’t be connected and why?

I can understand the reason why many people see the concept of IoT as an appealing idea. I can also
understand why some people refuse to integrate into this new modern era of technology. There are
some IoT devices that I, myself, would like to own, but there is one device that I feel as should not be
introduced or bought by others. Because of recent incidents, I do not support and will not take part in
the smart security cameras that you place in or outside of my home, or anyone’s home. I think this is a
total invasion of privacy and add on the possibility that my device could be hacked into and a stranger
will have access to my safe space, which is my home. There is no device that is 100% fool-proof and
although some devices’ disadvantages are not as grand, this one does not sit right with me. I understand
the desire to have your home under surveillance for safety reasons, but due to the potential lack of
privacy, I will not be participating in this specific trend.

What effect will the IoT have on our daily lives?

Internet of Things is rapidly becoming apart of our everyday lives. There are so many examples of IoT
that we do not even realize. Some examples of IoT are smart appliances, smart security systems and
fitness trackers. (How Internet of Things impact our everyday life, n.d.)

I believe that IoT will mostly have a positive impact on our daily lives. It will make things just a little bit
easier, especially when it comes to tasks like multi-tasking. For example, you are running late, but you
still need to make your coffee, but you need to get dressed still. Thanks to IoT, you can use you smart
appliance coffee machine to prepare a perfectly made cup of coffee.

We are already assisted with concepts of IoT if you have a smartphone. Do you use Siri often? Maybe
Alexa even? These are already examples of IoT making its way into our lives and IoT is coming in fast.

Conclusion
In conclusion, IoT has been here for awhile and is rapidly and sneakily catching up to us and adding itself
into our daily lives. Some people and companies have already incorporated IoT into their daily routines,
like me, while others prefer to do things the “old-fashioned way”. Once everyone gains the right
information on IoT, I believe we will become a society that heavily uses and depends on the assistance
of IoT.
