1.2 Explain the difference between the words in each pair. Use a dictionary to help you.

1. infectious/contagious
Infectious refers to a disease that is transmitted to people, organisms, etc., through the
environment, while a contagious disease is spread from one person or organism to another
by direct or indirect contact. ​✓
2. starvation/malnutrition
Starvation is the extreme suffering or death caused by lack of food. Malnutrition, on the other
hand, refers to deficiencies, excesses, or imbalances in a person's intake of energy and/or
nutrients. We could say that starvation is the most extreme form of malnutrition. ​✓
3. treatment/medicine
Treatment refers to the general medical care given to a sick or injured patient. Medicine,
used to treat or prevent diseases, could be a part of the treatment. ​✓
4. transmit/contract
When you transmit something, you are passing it to others. When you contract something,
you are the one to catch, for example, a disease. ​✓
5. epidemic/pandemic
Epidemic refers to a widespread occurrence of an infectious disease in a community at a
particular time. In comparison, a pandemic is of greater significance and refers to a disease
that is widespread over a whole country or the world. ​✓
6. acute/preventable
Acute refers to a disease that is of short duration but typically severe. When we say that a
disease is preventable we mean that it can be evitable or avoided taking some measures. ​✓
