Tycho Brahe, (born December 14, 1546, Knudstorp, Scania, Denmark—died October

24, 1601, Prague), Danish astronomer whose work in developing astronomical

instruments and in measuring and fixing the positions of stars paved the way for future
discoveries.
Died: October 24, 1601, Prague
Born: December 14, 1546
Profession: Astronomer
Nationality: Denmark
Brahe showed irregularities in the Moon's orbit and discovered a new star in the
Cassiopeia formation. Brahe invented many instruments such as the Tychonian
Quadrant which were widely copied and led to the invention of improved observational
equipment. In 1600, Tyco Brahe hired Johannes Kepler as his assistant.
Strange, but true!
Tyco Brahe lived by the motto "Non viduri sed esse". Translated into English this
statement reads, "Not to be seen but to be."
What was Tycho Brahe's model?
Brahe proposed a model of the solar system to explain Galileo's observation that Venus
has phases without making it necessary for Earth to be moving. His model had all the
planets (except Earth) orbiting around the Sun, but then the Sun orbited around the
Earth.

What is Ptolemy's model of the universe?

Ptolemy's model:
Ptolemy thought that all celestial objects — including the planets, Sun, Moon, and stars
— orbited Earth. Earth, in the center of the universe, did not move at all. ... The planets
are lined up to make the charts easy to read; they never line up this way in nature.
Why did Ptolemy believe in the geocentric theory?
He believed that the Earth was the center of the Universe. The word for earth in Greek
is geo, so we call this idea a "geocentric" theory. Even starting with this incorrect theory,
he was able to combine what he saw of the stars' movements with mathematics,
especially geometry, to predict the movements of the planets.
What was Ptolemy evidence for his theory?
Based on observations he made with his naked eye, Ptolemy saw the Universe as a set
of nested, transparent spheres, with Earth in the center. He posited that the Moon,
Mercury, Venus, and the Sun all revolved around Earth.

Nicolaus Copernicus died at the age of 70, on May 24, 1543 of a stroke. He had not
married and had no children. He had devoted his life to science, the church, and
government. He was buried in Frombork Cathedral, Poland

Review
Aristotle's (384-322 BCE) model placed the superior planets in right order using their
speed on the celestial sphere. He established a geocentric universe in which the fixed,
spherical Earth is at the center, surrounded by concentric celestial spheres of planets
and stars.

How the universe was formed?
During the Big Bang, all of the space, time, matter, and energy in the Universe was
created. This giant explosion hurled matter in all directions and caused space itself to
expand. As the Universe cooled, the material in it combined to form galaxies, stars, and
planets.
