Course Description:

This course is designed for students to gain practical knowledge of welding and associated tasks
necessary for a Commercial/Industrial environment. The course incorporates the pri nciples of
SMAW, as well as other types of welding, Oxygen/Acetylene cutti ng of metals and preparation
of various weld joint s, and general welding test positions. This course will assist students in
proper use and interpretation of welding pri nts, weld symbols, fundam entals of welding and
general shop safety. Students will make welds in all positions. This course incorporates the
National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Core Curri culum which
represents one of the foundational courses in the NCCER accredited welding program .

Each student will participate in the Shop/Laboratory environment as the group foreman for their
assigned group. All studen ts will participate in shop cleaning, and other duties as assigned. Each
student will keep their general work area clean and safe.

• Welding Helmet Shade I0 or Electronic Quick Change (EQC) Helmet;
• Welper style welding cutter/pliers
• Other items as required (i.e.) Steel toed Boots, Welders Cap or Skull Cap and Ear Plugs
or Ear Muffs .

Safety Requirements: Appropriate shop attire mu st be worn ...j eans or work pants. No Shorts
or shirts without sleeves (No loose fitting clothing, nylon or polyester, no frayed or fringed
materials).

Shoes: Appropriate footwear must also be worn ....Steel toed boots are requ ired (No open toes,
Sneakers, House shoes, etc...).

Instructional Methods: Classroom and Lab:


Students will be requi red to complete assignments as assigned and participat e in
classroom exercises. Method of instruction will be lecture and written assignments
(Classroom) and "hand on" while in LAB.
Assessment of Learning: Your Grade will be determined by evaluation of attendance,
comse work, and exams.

At the beginnin g of the semester an Assessment test will be given to determine the level
of knowledge each student possesses . (This is not for a grade, but to assess the level of
knowledge each student bring to the program). At the end of the semester each student
will take an assessment test to determine the level of knowledge gained throughout the
semester .

Attendance Policy:
Students are expected to attend all classes and to be on time. A student is allowed six (6)
unexcused absences. Four (4) Late arrivals and early departures will accumulate toward a
ONE (1) day absence. Illness with a doctor's excuse and hospitalization are NOT excused
absences. After the six (6th) absence, it is the student's responsibility to drop from the
course. Ifnot, then an F will be given for the course grade, Late is coming in after roll call
or leaving early.

You are expected to attend all of each class on timeL If you are more
than 5 minutes late for a class or leave before a class is dismissed, you
will lose attendance points which will affect your grade. BE ON TIME!

Not returning after lunch (on time) will cause reduction of daily points.

CELL PHONES: Use of cellular telephones during class is not permitted. All phones and
pagers are to be locked in your assigned locker. Violation of this policy will result in the
student being asked to leave, and receiving an absence for the day.

All assignments are due as assigned.
All assignments are due as assigned. All other assignments including labs are due at the
beginning of class as assigned. You will not be allowed in the LAB if your homework
is not completed and turned in, you will be allowed to remain in the classroom until
homework assignment is completed. (Points will be deducted if you need to stay and
finish homework). Homework deals with shop safety and this is why it must be
completed each week before entering the LAB/Shop Area

COURSE OVERVIEW

The course consists of reading assignments from the text and handouts supplemented by
question and answer sessions and classroom lecture as appropriate.
Objectives: This course is designed for students to gain practical knowledge of BASIC
welding and associated tasks necessary for a Commercial/Industrial environment.

A major part of this class will deal with safety. We will establish and maintain a culture
where sa fety is paramount. We will prevent accidents by planning tor safety in ever y
act.

IT IS IMPERATIVE EACH STUDENT ADOPT THE ATTITUDE SAFETY FIRST

Students should maintain the attitude "I am willing to stop if / feel

unsafe" If I observe others in unsafe conditions. I will stop them.

Safety is my primary concern.

REMEMBER" I AM THE FIRST LINE OF DEFENCE FOR MY OWN SAFTEY"

All Lab work MUST be signed off by the Welding Instructor before moving to the next
LAB assignment. Welding tests will be guided bend all position root andface pass.
