New Design Front Axle Actuator and Harness
A new design front axle actuator and harness is now used to correct a slow or no engagement into 4 wheel
drive engagement condition in cold weather.
This is normally caused by the thermally activated front axle actuator. Beginning in mid 1997 General
Motors replaced the thermally activated actuator with a new design motorized front axle actuator. The new
actuator is the replacement for earlier models. The new actuator requires some wiring system modifications,
depending on the specific model. GM has released 4 different wiring harnesses, depending upon application (see
the illustration below). The old design actuator used a two wire system (power and ground). The new actuator
uses a three wire system and requires splicing into the 4x4 system power feed circuit.
