BIRTH AND EMERGENCY PLAN

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this procedure, students are expected to:

⮚ Familiarize with the contents’ information of birth plan and emergency plan.

DEFINITION

Birth Plan - a written document prepared during the first prenatal consultation. Plan
may change anytime during pregnancy if an abnormality develops.

- Contains information on:

a. The woman’s condition during pregnancy

b. Preferences for her place of delivery and choice at birth attendant.

c. Available resources (transportation, companion, money) for her


childbirth and newborn baby.

d. Preparations needed (blood donor, referral center) should an


emergency arise during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum.

Emergency Plan – Discuss how to prepare for an emergency in pregnancy.

a. Advise on danger signs, signs of labor


b. Where to go?
c. How to go?
d. What to bring?
e. With whom will you go?
f. How much will it cost? Who will pay? How will you pay?
g. Start saving for the possible cost now.
h. Who will care for your home and other children when you are away?

Read the case and fill-up the Birth and Emergency Plan Form.

July 21, 2018 Maria de la Cruz is on her 8 th month pregnancy visit to BHS 4 for her
prenatal check-up. Maria lives at 33 Bonifacio St. Barangay 2 Lucban, Quezon. Midwife Leah
noticed that she has Philhealth. The estimated cost of the maternity package in the facility is
8,500 Php. She asked Maria some questions about her birth plan:

a. Where is her plan to deliver? Who will attend her delivery? She wants to deliver at
birthing home at Barangay Abang. She prefers that whoever attends her delivery
is the one on duty at the birthing home.

b. Who will take her to the birthing home when she is in labor and who will take care
of her children when she goes to the hospital? She prefers that her husband,
named Jose Santos will be the one to accompany her to the birthing home. His
contact no. is 0917 742 4913. Her youngest sister Jocelyn dela Cruz will take care
of her children when she is confined in the birthing home.

c. For the transportation Mrs. Santos prefer is tricycle of their neighbor owned by
Jun Reyes. For possible donor of blood is her sister Maria Dela Cruz if blood
transfusion is needed.
