What’s New

Activity 1 Weekly Television/Online Viewing Log

As an average student, you spend at least 900 hours a year in school

and 1,200 hours viewing television, movies, and online videos. With that, you
get tons of information about the world and how you could interact with
people.

Use this log to keep track of your daily television or online viewing
habits whether done at home or at your neighbor’s place. At the end of day 5,
add the viewing time for each day to discover your daily total for viewing.

For those who do not have access to television, you may write zero in
your viewing time.

Activity 3 Let’s Get Familiar

Below is a chart of materials or programs which you can view from your
television sets or through the internet. Examine each item and put a check
mark under the column not familiar if you have not seen the material and
familiar if you have seen it.

Materials Not familiar Familiar

1. documentary

2. internet-based

3. movie trailer

4. news flash

5. weather report

Our daily living highly involves visual media such that the television and
online platform allows us to become active in the modern way of
communicating around the world. We see advertisements, films, diagrams,
symbols, photographs, videos, drama, drawings, sculpture and paintings in a
daily basis that pave way to developing the viewing skill, as the fifth macro
skill of learning English language.

Viewing helps you understand the message by seeking and checking

understanding. It is classified according to its purpose and type of information
presented. The classification of viewing is called genres of viewing.

There are five genres of viewing: news flash, weather report,

internet-based program, movie trailer, and documentary.

6
Genres of Viewing

When there are current issues that the news organizations like ABS-
CBN, GMA, and CNN feel the warrant of interrupting their scheduled
programming in television, news flash is aired. The information conveyed in a
newsflash is important enough for viewers to take a quick break. For example,
a typhoon with heavy rain would come to your place, a timely news will
interrupt your favorite television shows like teleserye and movies.

Another genre is weather report, which is a part of an entire news

program that updates and foretells weather conditions on a specific area.
Weather forecasts are made by collecting data about the current state of the
atmosphere at a given place. When you wanted to know the weather for the
next day, you could watch the news program’s weather report to be updated.

Internet-based program also provides the viewers informative shows

that can be accessed through websites using internet connection. Netflix,
iWant TV, and many more internet-based programs provide shows that are
highly dependent to the internet. It would also require accessing through
desktop computers, laptops, and smart phones.

Oftentimes, when there are upcoming movies, there are series of

selected shots that are shown in television or internet. As these movie
trailers attract you because of its exciting, funny, or noteworthy parts of the
film, these are usually short to avoid spoilers.

Finally, a documentary is a genre of viewing that is based on

research. You can usually see it in long duration. As it is lengthy, it has the
ability to bring us a broader, more deeply engaged and wider view of the
current issues.

Activity 3 Language Connections

Read and study the following sentences.
• A documentary contains factual information that teaches us
about the fast, changing world.
• An effective news flash is written with very important details
about certain events that could affect us.
7
• Learning weather reports are helpful in determining future
events.

Process Questions:
1. What do you notice about the underlined words?
2. What do you call the underlined words?
3. What do you notice about the boxed words?
4. Which of these words are singular? Which are plural?
5. What do you need to remember about subjects and verbs
in sentences?

A subject is a part of a sentence that contains the person, place, thing

or idea performing the action in a sentence.
In the sentences above, the underlined words documentary, news
flash, and reports are the subject of each sentence while the boxed words
contains, teaches, are and is written are called verbs.
Verbs are the action words in a sentence that describe what the
subject is doing. Some verbs can function as main verbs or helping verbs also
called an auxiliary verb.

Basic Rule on Subject – Verb Agreement

• Subjects and verbs must agree in number.
A singular subject needs a singular verb; a plural subject
needs a plural verb.

Ms. Salig is a doctor by profession. Good leaders are open-minded.

subject verb subject verb

8
Basic Pattern

Singular Plural
First person I walk we walk
Second person you walk you walk
Third person he/she/it walks they walk

Examples:
Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is a threat to all people worldwide.

Overseas Filipinos are allowed to return home provided they submit

themselves for quarantine.

World Health Organization (WHO) advises people of all ages to

take steps to protect themselves from the virus.

Senior citizens appear to be more vulnerable to becoming severely

ill with the virus.

Way to go! You have just finished learning the basic rule of English
Grammar. This will help you in constructing simple sentences with meaning. Are
you ready to take some activities to test your knowledge?

What’s More

Activity 4 Differing Views

Watch a particular television/online program. For those who do not
have access to television or internet, your teacher will provide you with video
in a flash drive to be viewed where television is available in your barangay.

9
After viewing, answer the chart below considering the following data:

Title of the Material: Genre of Viewing:

Source:
(TV channel/ URL from website)
What information did you get from the material?
______________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________

Is the information essential? Why?

______________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________

Is the information truthful? What made you say so?

______________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________

When we immersed ourselves in viewing, it is very important that we

censor what we watch, whether in television or in the internet.
Viewing is more substantial and effective when we consider the best
information that creates value. If we responsibly select what we view, we can
filter information that is relevant for our purposes of viewing: entertainment
and information.
Now, more than ever, we need to educate ourselves about important
issues and finding varied and reliable information sources. Knowing the
essential and truthful information among the recent events across the globe, it
is very important that we check the quality sources of information about our
world and what is happening in it.

10
These genres of viewing provide an opportunity to understand and
connect with the world. Further, they are also a great way to gather with
friends to watch and engage around the important issues of our times.
Whether you watch through television or internet, talking about them
together in person is equally important. With social media channels at our
fingertips 24/7, these genres of viewing remind us of the real people on the
opposite side of an issue and different conditions in which we live.

What I Have Learned

Read the following sentences about the points to ponder for genres of
viewing. Choose the correct form of the verb inside the parentheses.

1. Viewing(is,are) an active process of comprehending visual media,
