Problem
Air Pollution and CO2 Emissions

● In many developing nations, air pollution from vehicles is an

incredibly important and even dangerous concern.
● The few solutions available on the market currently are much too
expensive for the average citizen from these parts of the world to
purchase.
● There needs to be a temporary solution to decrease the damage
Design Requirements
Performance: Manufacture:
- Captures Particulate Matter - Minimal parts
- Reduces amount of CO2 - Use of the same kind of material
expelled Safety:
Geometry: - Can’t produce any toxic gases or
- Fits onto different size chemicals
exhaust pipe systems - Held in place on exhaust pipe
Materials: Transport:
- Durable and heat resistant - The least amount possible
Time: Environment:
- 16 weeks - Captures expelled particles
Cost: - The cost in carbon emissions
- $10-$20 does not exceed the benefit our
product provides
Alternative Concepts
Concept #1: Concept #2:
- Outer Attachment - Filter inside exhaust
- Two particle screens (SS or Basalt) system
- Clamped on to the end of the - Reusable basalt screen
exhaust pipe and or cartridge
Final Concept: Main Features
● Particle Filter:
- Basalt material is heat resistant and used in industrial
projects
● Reusable screen:
- The screen is a metal mesh that holds the basalt screens
or cartridges
● Possible CO2 cartridge:
- The basalt material will be folded into a cartridge that will
hold either soda lime or some other material that can be
used to capture CO2
- The only drawback is the length of time the
material lasts
● Outer Rim:
- Hold the cartridge or screens together so it’s sturdy
Final Concept: Selection Reasons
● Inside the car exhaust system due to the possibility of more
than one exit pipes
● Hidden
● Small
● Inexpensive
● Less of a probability of falling out
● Have it installed or changed when going in for oil change or
other car related maintenance (convenient)
Design Drawings
Isometric Side Front
2D Blueprints
Special Features
● Reusable (Only required to be rinsed out after long term
usage)
● Heat Resistant (Can withstand temperatures as high as 788
F or 420 C)
Experiment Results
● The nylon filter proved to be effective at capturing
particulate matter from exhaust but highly fragile while in
contact with heat
● The potassium hydroxide proved to be mostly a failure at
capturing CO2, despite a number of different
concentrations being used
Design Strengths
● Excellent at capturing particulate matter
● Cheap to manufacture
● Simple to install and use
Performance Expectations
● Expected to capture vast majority of particulate matter
(prototype averaged at 1-2 grams collected while in idle for
3 minutes)
● CO2 emissions not expected to be effected in any major
regard
Marketing
● The primary market for our design is developing nations
that suffer from large amounts of air pollution, such as
India, China, Nigeria, etc.
● Given that many people from the developing world are
poor and do not have much disposable income, this
requires that our product be cheap and incentivized to the
consumer as a necessity to their health and those around
them
Future Strategy
● Moving forward we will pursue both an integrated and
attachable particulate matter filter, aimed at capturing the
larger elements from CO2 exhaust and combating air
pollution
● We would like to run further experiments and try out new
materials for the filter
● Testing the prototype as a whole
