PART-I
Sustainable Development is the masterful
balance of meeting our own needs without jeopardizing
future generation’s ability to do the same.
Environment: It is the sum total of the
surrounding that affects human life and
existence.
It includes air, water, land which affects
lives of human beings and other
creatures on Earth and the non living
things.
Components (elements) of
Environment:
Physical Environment Living Environment
(Abiotic Environment) (Biotic Environment)
Physical Environment includes: Living Environment includes:
Air , Water , Land , Mountains etc. Plants , Forest , Animals , Birds etc.
NOTE:

Study of environment is study of Interrelation between

Biotic (living) and Abiotic (physical) environment.
Functions of Environment:

It sustains life on earth:

Includes land , water , air etc. Without which life is not possible.

It provides natural resources:

It provides renewable resources (trees, fishes etc.) and
non-renewable resources (fossil fuel etc.)

It absorbs waste:
All the waste of production and consumption activities are absorbed
by the Environment.

It increases quality of life:

Increases qualities of life by providing River, Mountains, Oceans etc.
Renewable Resources Non-Renewable

short period of time.
Example: Fossil Fuels (coal,
Example: Trees, Fishes, Soil,
petroleum), Minerals etc.
Underground Water etc.
Environmental Crises:
It is the situation of danger to the well being of the Biotic and Abiotic
Environment due to human activities.

Reason of such crisis:

Excessive pollution beyond
Absorbing capacity of Environment.

Excessive Exploitation beyond

Carrying capacity of Environment.
Causes of Environmental Crises:
(Problems of Environment)

Excessive Pollution:
It is the fall in the quality of natural
resources due to various production
and consumption activities of people.

Excessive Exploitation:
Resources extraction is more than the
regeneration capacity of the nature. It
results in reduction of total resources
available.

Types/Forms of Pollution
Air Pollution Water Pollution

Land/Soil Pollution Noise/Sound Pollution

Types/Forms of Pollution
Air Pollution:
It is the mixing of natural and man-made substance in the air.
It reduces the quality of air and can cause several respiratory disease.
Types/Forms of Pollution
Causes of Air Pollution:
Smoke emitted by factories.
Smoke emitted by vehicles.
Types/Forms of Pollution
Water Pollution:
It is the contamination of water bodies through harmful chemicals or
other substances which reduces the quality of water and can sometimes
make the water unusable for human consumption.
Types/Forms of Pollution
Causes of Water Pollution:
Domestic sewerage that flow into rivers and canals.
Industrial wastage especially of chemical and river factories flowing into the
rivers.
Pesticides and chemicals used in farming which flows with water into the river.
Types/Forms of Pollution
Land/Soil Pollution:
It is the degradation of Earth’s surface and the soil, directly or indirectly by
human activities.
Types/Forms of Pollution
Causes of Land/Soil Pollution:
Disposal of waste such as plastic, garbage etc. By factories and humans.
Chemicals and pesticides used in agriculture which affect the quality of soil.
Deforestation.
Types/Forms of Pollution
Noise/Sound Pollution:
It is the spread (propagation) of undesirable noise in the Environment which has
harmful effects on the activities of human and animal life.
Types/Forms of Pollution
Causes of Noise/Sound Pollution:
Vehicles sounds (engine and horns) such as of cars, buses, trains, aeroplane.
Sounds of machines in factory.
Home appliances such as music systems, loudspeakers, mixer, washing machines
etc.
