The Water Cycle

Water has been around for

billions of years
Water gets recycled over
and over again

Recall Cycle
•A course or series of
events that repeats
regularly and usually
leads back to the starting
point.
What is the Water Cycle?
•The water cycle describes
how water is exchanged or
cycled through Earth's land,
ocean and atmosphere.
What is the Water/
Hydrologic Cycle?
•Water always exists in all three
places, and in many forms —
as lakes and rivers, glaciers
and ice sheets, oceans and seas,
underground aquifers,
and vapor in the air and clouds.

“Evaporation”
The conversion of water from a liquid to a gas

Solar energy drives evaporation of water from the ocean.

The evaporated water changes from a liquid form into
water vapor a gaseous form.
“Evaporation”
The conversion of water from a liquid to a gas

Evaporation is the process of a liquid's surface

changing to a gas. In the water cycle, liquid water
(in the ocean, lakes or rivers) evaporates and becomes water vapor.
“Condensation”
The transformation of water vapor back into liquid water by cooling

Evaporated water is warmed and rises into the air where

it eventually cools and condenses to form clouds.
“Condensation”
The transformation of water vapor back into liquid water by cooling

Condensation is the process of a gas changing

to a liquid. In the water cycle, water
vapor in the atmosphere condenses and becomes liquid.
.
“Precipitation”
Rain, hail, or snow falling from the clouds
due to the condensation of water

When clouds become very heavy with

in the form of rain, hail, or snow.
“Precipitation”

due to the condensation of water

Precipitation describes any liquid or solid water that falls to

Earth as a result of condensation in the atmosphere.

The Water Cycle
What happens to the water as it
boils?
Where did the water go?
What did the water change to?
What was formed on the surface of
the plastic wrap?
What was the ice used for?

The Water Cycle

Group Activity
Write three (3) importance of
water to each of the following:
•Humans
•Animals
•The environment
With enough condensed water, you get rain!
Project
• Create a model of the water cycle

• Due Date: Monday October 11, 2021

• Students are required to make a short

video explaining the three processes
involved in the water cycle.

The Water Cycle

Homework
Research areas of the world that
have issues of water scarcity
and contamination. Locate these
areas on a map.

The Water Cycle

Homework
There are many reasons for water
scarcity. Water could be scarce due to a
physical shortage (physical water
scarcity), or it could be scarce because
of institutional failures or lack of
adequate infrastructure to ensure a
regular supply.
With enough condensed water, you get rain!
Some countries with water
scarcity
Culminating Activity
Create a poem or song describing the water cycle. Ensure that each process is
described.

The End
Conserve
This  is the act of protecting Earth's
natural resources for current and future
generations. Conserving water means
using our water supply wisely and
being responsible.
Water Conservation
How can water be conserved in:
Home
School
Office
Importance of water conservation
Conserving water is important because:
it keeps water pure and clean while protecting the
environment
as every individual depends on water for livelihood,
we must learn how to keep our limited supply of water
pure and away from pollution. Keeping our water
supply safe and pure will protect the water for the
generations to come.
Water usage in homes
Water Pollution
Water pollution can be defined as
the contamination of a stream,
river, lake, ocean or any other
stretch of water, depleting water
quality and making it toxic for the
environment and humans.
Class Activity
• What are some things that humans do to
cause water pollution?
Causes of Water Pollution
Human activity is primarily
responsible for water pollution.
Landslides and floods can also
contribute to degrade the water
quality.
Effects of Water Pollution
Water pollution has very
negative effects on public
health. A lot of diseases result
from drinking or being in
contact with contaminated
water, such as diarrhea and
cholera.
Preventions of Water Pollution

Stop throwing garbage in

water
Limit the amount of
agriculture waste that goes in
the water
Methods of Water Purification

Boiling
Filtration
Distillation
Chlorination
Activity

Design a model of a water

purification system.
NB- you will need to present the model in class.
