"Close Reading"
A close reading is a careful and purposeful reading. basicly, it's rereading, it's a careful
and purposeful rereading of a text. it's an encounter with the text where readers really
focus on what the author had to say, what the author's purpose was, wha the words
mean, and wha the structure of the text tells us.
Effective readers engage in close reading to extract the most meaning from complex
text. Close reading is a process that entails reading and rereading multiple times, each
time with a different purpose and focus. Close reading is micro reading. It is the
attentive reading of a text, a finely detailed, very specific examination of a text. For
some students, this examination may require teachers to break text into smaller
segments, if the text is short, the entire lends itself to a close read. If however, the text is
length, specific text segments may be selected for a close read and then relate those
segments to the whole work.
Over the last decade, teachers have been using the transactional reader response
approach (Roseblatt, 1968) to activate shema (Anderson, 1977) in order to promote
understanding by developing meaningful connections and creating metacognitive
readers (Flavell, 1979). However, this approach left readers with the notion that the text
was simply a launching point for their musings, images that popped with the notion their
heads, and random questions that, in the end, did little to enhance their understanding
for the text (Boyles, 2012/2013,para.6).
Using Close Reading, teachers need to change their instructional practices (Boyles,
2012/2013). Teachers work with finding text based answers and using evidence based
conversations to find thoughtful, precise answers to questions. Hher teachers focus on
helping students read carefully to draw evidence and knwledge from the text. This close
read requires students to examine texts adequate range and complexity while being
taught strategies to develop underrstandinng and comprehension (Colman, Pimentel,
2012, p1).
The use of startegies and questioning outlined above help students understand how
Close Reading of text helps them to gain a deeper understanding of the contnt being
read. Close Reading allows challenging text to be chunked into manageable pieces for
rereading and indepth study. Using strategies, such as formulating questions, analyzing
key events, analyzing text structures, determining word meanings, determining central
idea, drawing inferences, determining why the author wrote the text, a,d evaluating the
text with what we already know enables students to think more deeply about their
reading and in turn enhance discussions with peers while returning to the text to cite
evidence to support their thinking.
