TOPIC: Social Implications Of IT

Children nowadays have a way of connecting and interacting

continuously with friends. They use various electronic gadgets, play
games with people from other countries, have live face-to-face
conversations via Skype, etc. It’s hard to even imagine a childhood
without the internet and social media. The importance of technology’s
impact on society has previously been considered. At the center of the
social implications of technology are humans – it is humans who make
the technology and humans who benefit, or are harmed, by it. That is
not to say that other species do, or do not, benefit from, or are harmed
by, human technologies, just that they are not contributors to what we
term technology. diate information storage : The information

 Information Technology:
Infotmation technology deals with the use of computers and tele-
communication equipment to store, retrieve, transmit and
manipulatedata such as networking, hardware, software, the internet
or the people that work with these technologies.
Definiton of IT used in the CYBER WORLD:
Information technology is the technology used to store, manipulate,
distribute or create information. The type of information or data is not
important to this definition. The technology is any mechanism capable
of processing in this data.

Society:
Socitey can be defined as “a community, nation, or broad grouping of
people having common traditions, institutions and collective activities
and interests.
Socitey and information technology are rapidly co-evolving and
often in surpising ways. Socitey and networked information technonoly
are changing one another becoming socialized means learning wgat
kinds of behavior is appropriate in a given social and intellectual
interations opens the door to new ways of gathering and synthesizing
information that was previously disconnected.

How is IT and Socitey linked?

In the past few decades there has been a revolution in computing and
communications and all indications are that technological progress and
use of information technology will continue at a rapid pace.
Accompanying and supporting the dramatic increases in the power and
use of new information technologies has been the deciling cost of
communications as a result of both technological improvements and
increased competition.
 Effects of information
technology in our daily
activities.
1. IT in education:
Information technology has made the education process more effective
and productive. It has increased the well-being of the students.
Developed methods of education have made this process easier, such
as the replacement of books with tablets and laptops. Moreover, the
emergence of e-learning platforms that allows students to learn from
their homes. These platforms can be an effective alternative for people
who are out of school, or who have difficulties keeping up with their
teachers in class. These platforms gives students the chance to review
the courses with simpler and more concrete explanations at every
moment, and this reinforces the educational process and leads to
better results in school for most of the students.
2. IT in the health system:
In the field of medicine, medical devices have known a remarkable
development. They have become more efficient. IT has entered these
devices and turned them into digital devices that facilitate their
programming and handling. Thanks to IT sectors like the artificial
intelligence (AI) the world has witnessed distance surgeries thanks to
robots, the implementation of artificial members as artificial legs, hands
and even artificial cardio-aortic valves.
“Information technology is of particular importance to health care
delivery. Developments of computerized patient records will enhance
the efficiency, effectiveness, and distribution of health care. As
managed care programs develop, population-based information will be
of increasing importance to health careproviders and to the public
health community. The capacity to transmit this information through
telecommunication linkages, including telemedicine, will revolutionize
the accessibility of health care to underserved areas, including both
rural and urban populations. These developments will raise substantial
concerns regarding confidentiality and privacy because information on
health may be very relevant to employment and insurability.T he
development of the field of medicine is important for humanity. It is
the basis for living a healthy life away from disease and pain.
3. IT in Bussiness:
The Capgimini Company confirms the positive impact of the use of ICTs
on working conditions. This confirmation was made after various
studies carried out by the company. By adopting a strategy of openness
to new possibilities of interaction and production, it follows that these
uses have brought concrete improvements and have contributed
directly and concretely to the feeling of job satisfaction. They are often
solutions considered appropriate by the employees to the problems
that they have to manage in their context of present work (safety,
interest of the work, need of sense and being actor of the evolutions …)
or throughout their professional life (work / life balance, employability
…)
4.The social impact of IT:
It can be said that the social impact of information technology has two
sides. It cannot be one hundred percent negative nor hundred percent
positive. It is a two-sided weapon.
Sociologists likened the impact of information technology on society to
transforming the world from vast continents separating people and
relatives, to a very small village encompassing the entire world’s
population, which is called globalization. Before information technology
communication between people required days even months to reached
each other. Thanks to information technology, communication between
people in different parts of the globe has become an easy and fast
process, via different ways: instant messaging, phone calls or video
calls..
Information technology has changed the way people perceive reality,
and it caused quite a disorder in some concept and perceptions.
Modern technology has changed our perspective on many concepts. It
also changed our dealings with many traditions and customs that were
once considered sacred and the pillars of society. Despite the fact that
the modern means of communication made the world a small village
that facilitate communication, though it created a kind of alienation
and divergence within the family. Communication between members of
the same family is almost non-existent, worse communication between
people in general has become virtual. We note the disappearance of
human relations.
5. IT in government:
A. UID project
 Contains personal data, templates of thumb prints and
photographs of card holders.
 Information dtored is kept with high security.
B. Railway Rocking:
 Helps in booking the tickets online.
C. Bill payment.
 Reduce the physical movements of people for paying bills.

 Advantages:
Communication:
With the help of information technology, communication has also
become cheaper, quicker and more efficient.

Bridging the cultural gap:

Information Technology has helped to bridge the cultural gap by
helping people from different cultures to communicate with one
another.

Creation of new jobs:

The best advantage of IT is the creation of new and interesting jobs.

 Disadvantages:

Unemployment:
While IT may have streamlined the business process it has also created
job redundancies eample- a lot of lower and middle level jobs have
been done away with causing more people to become unemployed.

Privacy:
Through IT may have made communication quicker, easier and more
convenient. It has also bought along privacy issues. From cell phones
signal interceptions to email hacking, people are now worried about
their once private information becoming public knowledge.

Lack of job security:

One has to be in a constant learning mode, if he ir she wishes for their
job to be secure.

Dominant Culture:
While IT may have made the world a globle village, it has also
contributed to one culture dominanting another weaker one. For
example it is now argued that US influences how most young teenagers
all over the world now etc, dress and behave.

 How to be a Good citizen:

Being a good online citizen is more than being a safe Internet use. Be careful
of what you share. Comments, social media posts, photos, and anything else
you share online is not guaranteed to be protected from online predators or
hackers, even if you’re sharing only to specific people on password-protected
sites. Post only things you’d be ok with everyone you know seeing.

 Treat others the way you want to be treated:  This

sounds pretty basic, but it’s probably the one piece of digital
etiquette advice that is broken the most. Keep your comments
positive; be truthful, and polite. If you want to go the extra mile,
acknowledge when someone has been helpful; thank them, and
pay it forward!
 Don’t say anything online you wouldn’t say to
someone’s face: An online comment can be even more
hurtful than a face-to-face insult, because once something is
written the person can read it over and over again.Sometimes we
find it easier to reply with negative comments when the person is
not right in front of you and you can hide behind your computer
or smartphone. Don’t be tempted; think twice about what you are
saying before you post or send, and ask yourself, “Would I say this
to someone if they were standing in front of me?”
 Don’t post anything that you don’t want to last
forever:  Before you say or post anything online, ask yourself,
“Am I ok if this is never deleted?”. Once something is out there
online, it is likely it’s out there for good. There is no delete button
or eraser for the Internet.
 Be safe: Being safe online is a whole topic in itself, much
different from being a good digital citizen—and with much
different ramifications. It’s crucial not divulge any personal
information, passwords, addresses, etc. with someone you don’t
know.

 Introduction of internet:
A means of connecting a computing to any other computer anywhere in
the world via dedicated routers and servers. When two computers are
connected over the internet, they can send and receive all kinds of
informations such as tet, graphics, videos and computer programs.

World Wide Web:

The World Wide Web(www,w3) is an information system of interlinked
hypertext documents that are accessed via the internet. Web pages
may contain tet, videos and other multimedia components as well as
web navigation features consisting hyperlinks. It is a client-server
system.

Web servers:
Web server is an information technology that deliver web pages.
Every Web server has an IP address and possibly a domain name. For
example, if you enter the URL http://www.google.com in your
browser, this sends a request to the web server whose domain name is
google.com. The server then find the page and send it to your
browser.
Web Browser:
A web browser is a software application for retrieving and presenting
information resources on the World Wide Web. The major web
browser are Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Opera and
Safari.

Web Page:
A Web Page is a web document that is suitable for the World Wide
Web and the web browser. The web page is what displays, but the term
also refers to a computer file, usually written in HTML or comparable
markup language.

Website:
A Website is a set of related web pages typically served from a single
web domain. All publically accessible web site collectively consititue the
World Wide Web.

Blog:
A blog is a discussion or informational website which is published on
the World Wide Web and consisting posts typically displayed in reverse
choronological order.

Social Networking:
A social Networking service is a platform to build social networks or
social relations among people who share interests, activities,
background or real life connections. Social network sites are web based
services that allow individual to create a public profile, to create a list of
users with whom to share connections and view and cross the
connections within the system.

Conclusion:
Information Technology is the basic requirement of today’s world.
Technological progress is entering into all fields. Education was a big
and important part of development and progress.
Information technology has changed human life radically, and not
necessarily, all of the changes are positive. Some may be negative and
have a detrimental effect on the individual and the community. For
example, traffickers use the Internet to offer and promote their
products for sale.
There are many means of technology, including what serves science,
education and economy. There is a close relationship between science
and technology. It is noted that the basis of technology is to study
science and employ (IT) inventions in the different life’s areas, in order
to meet the needs of the individuals and the societies. Therefore, it
connects the governments, companies and societies to develop
strategies to enhance the lifestyle quality of the citizens.
