from the word glossary. (20 points; 2 each)

24. Laura was shocked at first because the water was so cold but she (1) makes him amazed. Then a
whale was ‘ right there’ and she thought ‘oh my word, I’m in the middle of something so much bigger
than me’- she focused on the situation that she was in. What was happening to her had a powerful
effect on her and she paid attention to her situation.

25. Laura says that when she is in the pool with a whale, she is ‘in the middle of a miracle’ because
whales are ‘(2) top predator’ but the whales chooses not to (3) harm you but follow you.

26. Laura says that the relationship an animal trainer has with a whale is like the relationship between
people. She says that when you have just met someone, you don’t invite yourself to that person’s house
because that would be impolite. Instead you (4) take small step. So when a trainer begins to train a
whale, they should behave in the same way.

27. The first part of training a whale involves (5) obverse what they do naturally. The trainer then
combines that natural action with a (6) signal which tells the whale something about that natural action.
These signals are called ‘ secondary reinforcers’ and they happen after the whale has done a natural
action.

28. Laura says ‘food is not as good as a (7) hug’. The trainers use the word ‘(8) touches’ a lot because
whales love it.

29. Laura says that the most important part of training is the (9) relationship you have.
30. Laura says that you have to think about what you are going to (10) confident when you are in front
of a big and heavy creature with 52 conically shaped teeth and eyes that are far apart from each other.
