MLA Report Formatting

School reports are often formatted using a simple form of the MLA, Modern Language

Association, style guidelines.

MLA provides standard rules to follow so that most research papers are formatted

in a similar manner. This makes it easier for readers to understand the

information. MLA style has been adopted and used by numerous disciplines in

multiple parts of the world. (Imagine Easy Solutions, LLC, 2016)

Margins and Spacing

The top, bottom, left, and right margins on all pages of a report are one inch. All lines of

the report, including long quotations, bulleted and numbered list, and tables, use 2.0 line

spacing (double spacing). Use the shortcut, CTRL 2, to set double line spacing.

To set margins, locate the page layout tab, then click on Margins in the page Setup group.

The typist may also use a shortcut y double clicking anywhere on the left ruler.

Report Parts

A page number right- aligned at the top appears on every page, including the first page.

The writer's last name goes before the page number. A space separates the name and page

number. To open the header, double click anywhere in the top margin. Right align the insertion

point by holding down the CTRL key and typing R. Insert a page number by clicking on the

insert tap, then page number. Choose Current Position, then plain number. Because the writers

name and page number are in the header, they will aper automatically on every page of the

report.

The report heading appears at the top of page. It includes the writers name, teachers

name, subject name, and date. The title of the report is center aliened below the date, followed by

the body of the report. (Hogget, Shank & Smith)

The first line of each paragraph is indented one-half inch from the left margin. To make

the indentation to occur automatically, the typist expands the paragraph group on the home

ribbon then selects First Line in the Indentation area. If the report contains long quotations that

are four or more lines, the quote must be one inch from the left margin. The typist again expands

the paragraph group, deselects first line indentation, and changes the left indentation to one inch.

The work cited page is keyed on a separate page at the end of the report. It contains the

references- books, westies, magazines, etc.- used to collect information about the subject of the

report. It has a tittle center aliened at the top of the page followed by a list of the references using

a hangout indent. This type of indent is found in the same location as the first line indent when

the typist expands the paragraph group on the home ribbon.
