Learning Portfolio A3 Questions

Textbook questions

1. Briefly explain any three specific situations where listening will be an important part of your life

Situation 1: Listening at workplace

Especially when you are fresh in the office.Try to pay attention as much as possible because when you
lose the information which not only affects your productivity, your impression but also wastes the time
of the speaker and makes them feel disrespectful. And always remember that you are new, you have to
study everything. Hence, listening is the most crucial key to help you overcome the first time and help
you a lot on your career path.

Situation 2: Listening at home.

Now I am a university student, I realize how important listening at home. And I wish that I could
concentrate on many things that my parents told me before leaving far away from home. Because all
things they told me is all from their experience and their love. Maybe at that time, you feel that they are
talkative or they waste your time. But believe me that when you far from your family. The most thing
you are going to miss is the voice of your parents, the lessons they teach. So if you still stay home, try to
talk with your parents as much as possible. I am sure that every parent is happy to know more about
their children.

Situation 3: Listening in class.

I have to say that sometimes I still do not listen well in class. As a result, I do not have a deep well of
learning or deep thinking. After that, I have to read books again or ask my friend which wastes my time a
lot. I know it is hard to pay 100% attention in class maybe because of your crush, your hungry sound,
and so on. But try to pay attention as much as possible because you learn not only from a tedious
textbook or PowerPoint slides but also from the lecture’s experience which makes you have a different
perspective of life and maybe can change your mindset. For example, Mr. John teaches me a lot
especially in the homework about creating a blog. Thanks for that I have a deep look at what did I do
and try to fix it in the future. That’s the way how I complete myself by myself and with the help of a
lecture.

2. List six elements of supportive climate. Give an example for a time when you have witnessed
each
There are six components which create the supportive climates: description, problem
orientation, spontaneity, spontaneity, empathy, equality, provisionalism

Description:
When discussing how to do the assignment, each member can voice their ideas to tell how they
feel or give any different ideas, which contributes a variety of perspectives.
Problem orientation
After each assignment, our group has a meeting which reflects all things and gives feedback on
each role. We had a misunderstanding on how to create a blog and received some not good
feedbacks. Everyone tries to find the best solution that is trying our best in next time, if we have
any questions try to ask the lecture as soon as possible. Thanks to the good collaboration that
we don’t put all the flaw on each member

Spontaneity
Two days ago, due to sleeping a lot that I forgot to attend the meeting, which not really fine for
the newbie in the club. After that, I tell all the truths to my vice president. Of course, I received
some complaints because of my fault. At least, I can learn a lesson for myself and maybe my vice
president felt comfortable because she knew the reason why her member absent from the
meeting.

Empathy
Last week, our group had lots of deadlines but there is a Welcome Night. Some members of our
group who participated in that show to give us a great performance. Therefore, it was quite
inconvenient when doing the group’s assignment. And they were text politely ask if they can
come late or do less work. The rest of the group agreed with that and we still finished the
assignment on time. Thanks for the empathy which help our group avoid an argument.

Equality

Recently, I have joined a club. There are a variety of ages in this club. However, the elder to the younger
have to join the meeting on time, and can achieve compliments if they do well or complains which
means they have to try hard next time. Everyone is fair and each of us has to try hard and respect others

Provisionalism
This story has happened to me. When I was in grade 5, my parents let me learn ballet. But ballet
is not suitable for me because I’m a kind of naughty child and I want to learn something such as
martial arts. In the eastern, girls should be cute and decent but the subject I chose is different. I
just want to say thank you to my parents that still allow me to learn Taekwondo. And now I can
protect myself when living away from home.

3. Identify three ways you can apply your knowledge of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (Figure 10.4,
Braun et. al. textbook) to improve your professional and interpersonal communications.
First way
For example, my audience is the person who needs to save time and money. Therefore, I will
start a conservation with them such as I have a problem with time and money or how I can
overcome these problems. Moreover, I can find some tips which save our time such as delete
the emails which are not necessary or put all the file which have the same topic in one place. To
money, I can suggest some books which teach how to manage money better or divide the
income into 5 parts consist of shopping, saving, bills, urgent, investment.

Second way:

My audiences are the people who have just earned enough money to pay for basic food, clothing,
shelter, and medical care. Therefore, instead of talking about the luxury brand, I can change the topic of
selling clothes or how to recycle things. For example, with food, instead of hanging out in a famous
restaurant, I can invite them to home ( make sure that they are not bad people) to cook or introduce to
them some cheap but clean food mall.

Third way:

My audience is trying to serving humanity. Finding lots of information about the charity or
raising funding for the society is essential. The more you know, the longer conservation lasts. I
will try to pay attention because these people help the community with all their hearts. While
listening, I can achieve many things more than I give. Investing in the community is all worth all
costs.

Portfolio Reflection

Through this session, I have study two skills which not only important but also necessary in my career
path and my life as well. When I was young, I was taught how to pronounce words correctly but no one
taught me how to listen well. And another skill is an interpersonal skill. I communicate with a lot of
people each day. Having a deep understanding also using it fluently help me create a good impression
and expand my network effectively. Thanks to practical workshop B4 that I have a chance to attend the
meeting in which I can observe how others communicate and how they create a positive climate or start
stories that catch the most attention. I strongly say that all those skills I have study are useful in my life,
especially the two skills which I mentioned below. The more I learn, the more I practice, is the way how I
can improve myself and be the best version of mine
