Textbook Questions

1. Provide two examples of different points of view you have had with someone else. What do you think
caused these different viewpoints? How did you deal with them?

When I was a child, I was said that people who have tattoos are bad because of the imagination of
films or the gangsters. Therefore, it was liked a needle that punctures my skin for 17 years. On a
beautiful day, my bag was stolen. At that time, I thought that I lost it as the thief was too fast.
Suddenly, a man with full tattoos on his right arm tried to catch up with the thief to bring back my
bag for me. It liked a powerful punch that blows out all my prejudice of the tattoo community. After
that, he gave me my bag and told me to be careful. What a nice man! And I have realized that I have
checked the reliability of the information before believing in something and do not judge if do not
know anything.

5 years ago, LGBT is such a group of weird people in my mind. Perhaps because the prejudice of the
traditional culture and the unpopular defines of LGBT causes many misunderstand which lead other
people to have a bad impression. Everything has changed day by day. The social has open-minded
on LGBT and give hand to help them live in their true their-self in some ways. I do too. Now I have
many friends in the LGBT community, some of them also are my role model. The world is bigger
than our knowledge. Therefore, be curious and be different. Because there are more than 7 million
people in the world so you do not have to tie yourself in some fogy view. We only live once, hence,
live the way which makes us not regret.

2. Emphasizing the importance of audience, salespeople often say, “The customer is king,” or “The
customer is always right,” or “The customer is in control.” To what extent do you feel in control as a
customer, a citizen, or a student?

Firstly, the three quotes which are mentioned in the question are half right and half wrong for me.
Because I am a person who pays our money to have a service. Therefore, I have a right to have
questions, to ask for help, or some specific rights when I am a citizen such as democratic right,
freedom of speech right, and so on. On the other hand, the things that I ask or want to have must in
some limitation area. As we are human beings, no one is more special than anyone. Hence, try to be
polite and harmonious with each other.

3. List three strategies for communicating with people for whom English is not their first language

Three methods should be used when having a conversation with non-native English speakers
 Have a positive attitude to make the speakers feel relax and comfortable. Therefore, they have
more self-confidence to explain everything in English although it is not their first language.
 Try not to use slangs or dialects because even the native speakers cannot understand all those
words

Try to convey the ideas in a simple way. If the audiences still cannot understand then using non-
verbal such as gestures, postures, and so on. But make sure every action which is used is suitable for
the culture of the audiences

4. Identify three privileges that you have experienced because of your gender, age, ethnicity or religious
beliefs.

I have experienced three advantages due to my gender and my age:

My gender:
 Do not have to do heavy work on World Cleanup Day when I was in high school. As in this day,
boys immediately became a real man by doing all hard work such as cleaning fans, doors,
windows, desks. Whilst girls just had to relax and chill.
 Do not have to pull the chair by myself. It happened when I hung out with my friend who is a
study abroad student in Germany and he told me that this is a culture of Germany. My age:

My age:

 Do not have to clean a lot of dishes after a feast because the elderly people think that the young
will break the plates because of their laziness.
Portfolio Reflection

Thanks to the learning sources and portfolio questions give me a chance to have deep knowledge of my
thoughts, also my actions as well. Moreover, providing me an understanding of different cultures and
how to respect all those differences. The most impression point for me is the difference in culture. I live
in the globalization age now. Hence, the more knowledge you know about the client’s culture, the
higher your ability to have contracts. Definition, examples, illustrations do their roles very well.
Especially the examples of Canadian culture which help me to explain why there are many types of
behaviors in Canada. Because there are more than 200 ethnic groups which cause the diversity.
Therefore, having open-minded, flexible adaptability is two important skills that help me in intercultural
communication. Reading books and be able to learn new things day by day is the first step.
