Dear Martin Reader Response

Nic Stone, an outstanding writer that excels at bringing the main character, Justyce

McAllisters “powerful and wrenching”(Green, n.p.g), story to life. This book addresses the

vigorous topic of racism in our country. A surplus amount of examples were brought forth by the

author, showing us just how prominent this issue is. Along with the use of examples the author

uses different techniques in order to prompt the audience of the dispute going on around us. For

reference, author Nic Stone has an immense amount of connections to modern-day cultures and

affairs, also suspense in order to keep readers interested, the conflict and plot of the story make it

so compelling to an extremely wide variety of avid readers.

The world around us is constantly changing and evolving with each generation. Dear

Martin is a raw believable story that truly speaks on the problems of oppression within our

country, states, cities, and towns. Using modern-day connections within your writing can result

in extremely good feedback. Talking about issues that are taking place in the here and now has

positive feedback from readers. AN example of a modern-day connection within this book is the

entire message. Nic Stone is addressing the current most predominant issues today; racism. “

Whatever. All I know is that no matter what college I end up at, When I see a minority, I’m

gonna wonder if they’re qualified to be there. Institutional racism is the term used to define the

type of racism Nic Stone touches on most throughout the book. Nic Stones’ writing is very

touching and easy to connect with, the stories and day-to-day struggles she addresses may be

easy to connect with for some individuals experiencing similar paths.

“BANG BANG BANG”(Stone,p.g.120), every genre of a novel requires a different sense

of suspense and that’s because readers love the build-up and the guessing game of what will

happen next. This keeps the reader focused on the book and what is taking place, it helps get

your point across. Writer Nic Stone uses suspense in many ways throughout the plot. Such as, “...

Officer Tison was not on duty at the time of the shooting and was taken into police custody at the

scene. More on this story as it continues to develop”(Stone,p.g.123), With this quote in mind you

can see how one might enjoy the suspense used within this novel. The suspense makes it nearly

impossible to put this book down. In addition to the suspense portion of this novel, the writer

adds an amazing plot that is very effortless to follow and an interesting dynamic plot.

Having a compelling plot and interesting conflicts is one fantastic way to keep the

audience listening to the message. Nic stone really gives you a look at all aspects of Justyce’s

life. The romantic side, family relationships, school, his goals, connections, and friendships,this

aspect of the book made me want to read more. I was so invested in the characters that I didn’t

want to put down the novel without knowing what happened next. “SEE! It’s something going on

between y'all, man! I can see that shit all over your face”(Stone,p.g.70) The drama portion of this

novel is what got me first interested and entangled in the plot. After getting to know the

characters you develop a connection to the story making it something you cannot stop reading.

Dear Martin is a remarkable novel with many great aspects including a variety of

connections to modern-day cultures and affairs, suspense in order to keep readers interested,

lastly author Nic stone provides a well thought out plot and an immense portion of conflicts

within the story keeping readers interested and involved with the message behind the story.
