I. NEED TO KNOW

INTRODUCTION
There is only one full-length folk epic that has survived in the Old English literature. This is the
epic Beowulf. It is the best example of warrior literature. In this lesson, you will learn about the
heroic deeds of the hero Beowulf. You will also learn to appreciate sensory images and use
modals in different functions.

An epic is a lengthy poem telling a story of the adventures of extraordinary men and
women. They narrate the deeds and heroics of a legendary figure or a history of a
nation. An epic has numerous characteristics. Match these characteristics from

During our childhood, we all looked up to heroes that we see in televisions and
comics. Their superpowers and heroic deeds amazed us. However, growing up, our
perceptions of the word ‘hero’ changes gradually. Nowadays, especially during the
time of pandemic, our ideas of what a ‘hero’ are different from our childhood dreams.
Let us compare them in this activity. Answer the following questions.

Expressing Appreciation for the Sensory Image Used


Good narratives make use of image- and sound-evoking words to
transport a reader into the world of the story. Beowulf’s story uses descriptive
language to appeal to the reader’s senses. Here are some examples from
the selection:
It was filled with treasures and weapons of war; and in the midst of
these warlike things was a baby sleeping. (sense of sight)
At midnight Grendel came bursting the door inwards, laughing at the
thought of the feast of flesh before him. (sense of hearing)

DAY 2

Modal verbs and their Meaning


What are modal verbs?
Modals (also called modal verbs, modal auxiliary verbs, modal auxiliaries) are special
verbs which behave irregularly in English. They are different from normal verbs like
"work, play, visit..." They give additional information about the function of the main verb
that follows it. They have a great variety of communicative functions.
Here are some characteristics of modal verbs:
• They never change their form. You can't add "s", "ed", "ing"...
• They are always followed by an infinitive without "to" (e.i. the bare infinitive.)
• They are used to indicate modality allow speakers to express certainty,
possibility, willingness, obligation, necessity, ability
Here is a list of modal verbs:
can, could, may, might, will, would, shall, should, must, have to

Use of modal verbs:


Modal verbs are used to express many functions such as:
1. Permission
Can I use your phone?
Excuse me, could I just say something?
May I go to the restroom? (polite permission)
Might I suggest an idea? (polite permission)

2. Ability
I can swim.
When I was younger, I could run fast. (ability in the past)
I will be able to speak French after these lessons. (ability in the future)

3. Obligation
You have to stop when the traffic lights turn red. (impersonal obligation)
I should see a doctor. I have a terrible headache. (50% obligation)
You must work hard to achieve your dreams. (personal obligation)
I had to bring my mother to the hospital. (past obligation)

4. Prohibition
You must not smoke in the hospital. (official prohibition)
You should not talk to people rudely. (moral/personal prohibition)
