MS. JESSA MARIE R. CANTILLAN

(English 9) Page 1 of 8
This learning module is designed such that encourages independent and self-regulated learning among the students and
develops their 21st century skills. It is written in a way that the teacher is communicating directly to the learner.

In this module, you will study the literature of England from its beginning to the Renaissance. You will also understand more
how literature is used to transfer values and cultures from one generation to another and how norms at that time affect the literature.
As you go through the lessons, the learning tasks will be made easier as this module helps you identify the writer’s style through the
use of different literary devices.

You will improve your communication skills by learning the different communicative styles appropriate for the given
situation, the use of modals to express permission, obligation and prohibition, and to express argument with the use of conditionals.

You will find out that if you develop these skills in your first weeks in school, your grade nine work will be easier and more
interesting.

Please start and end this module with a prayer.

Hello! You are now officially a Grade 9 student! After experiencing the literature, culture, and ways of life of the people
from Asia and Africa, it is now time to spread your horizons and expand your knowledge about the Anglo-American or British and
American Literature.

Throughout the evolution of man, literature has played a key point in its development. It was used to transfer knowledge that
helped shape civilizations and societies from one generation to another. According to Baumbach S., Grabes H., and N ϋnning A.,
(2009), “Literature is an important means of worldmaking, of making sense of our lives and of reflecting, reinforcing but also
constructing the norms and values we live by.”

In this particular module, you will be reading the Epic of Beowulf, the most well-known literary piece from the Old English
Period and see how the lessons from this epic can be applied to our modern-day circumstances.

 People call them heroes, specifically, super heroes for their amazing powers and extraordinary abilities.

UNDERSTAND LITERARY BACKGROUND

It would not be too far-fetched to say that the “author” of this text is actually a whole culture. Beowulf, an early Anglo-
Saxon poem, is based on ancient traditions and the way of life of waging-war, merrymaking, sharing stories about
heroes and their mighty deeds, preoccupation with works of the hands, deep reverence for nature, and fear of God brought by the

Anglo-Saxons from their home continent. In the story, when Beowulf heard about the attacks on Hrothgar’s palace by a terrible
creature named Grendel, he offers his services to the King Hrothgar.

WRITING A EULOGY

The term eulogy originates from the Greek word eulogia, which means “to praise” somebody or something. A eulogy is a literary
device that is a laudatory expression in a speech, or a written tribute to a person recently deceased. We can say, it is a
commendation or high praise intended to give honor, generally to a dead family member or loved one, or it is a tribute given to a
dead person at his or her funeral.
