Practical #1:

Health and safety in laboratory.

PURPOSE: To discuss health and safety protocols in


laboratory.

SCOPE:
work act 1974 describe health and safety protocols for everyone
in their place of work. The responsibilities for safety rests
equally between staff and students.
The standard operating procedure (SOPs) covers the minimum
protective clothing required in pharmaceutical laboratory of
Sarhad University.
It outlines the safety equipment’s that is present in quality
control laboratory (QC) and importance of hygiene. COSH
(control of substance hazards to health).

RESPONSIBILITIES: most responsibilities are clearly stated


in the procedure whose are not listed below.
The responsibility for safety rests equally between employ and
employer. It is the duty of employer to take the responsibility of
health and safety and other who may be affected by his/her act
and emissions at work and to cooperate with their employs and
other in meeting stat over health and safety requirements.

Laboratory personal:
1. Must wear mask the minimum safety protection outline in
this SOP to conduct their work.
2. Must ensure their colleagues adhere to safe and hygienic
work and practical.

Reference:

a) Safety environment: care must be taken when handling


chemicals referred to be COSH it necessary. Ensure that
minimum safety levels are observed when work in quality
control laboratory.

b) Training: the laboratory personnel are to be train on this


SOPs by reading this procedure.

Procedure:

Protecting clothing in laboratory:

a) White coat: lab coat must be worn at all the time in the
laboratory. Coat must be buttoned or they can easily
cause an accident. They must be changed on regular
bases. If the coat become very dirty or impregnated with
particular material such that it cannot be clear. It should
be change immediately to prevent combinations of other
materials to be handed or skin irritation.
b) Safety gloves: they must be worn when handling
chemicals and other hazardous materials. Chemical
resisting gloves are available in the laboratory for use
with hazardous chemicals. The gloves are available in
latex and non-latex forms. Latex gloves should not be
used if lactic allergy is suspected.

c) Safety glasses: they must be worn at all the time in the


laboratory once passed the demarcation area signified by
the red lines.

d) Safety shoes: anti-static shoes or boots must be worn at


all time when working in laboratory unless passing
through.

e) Safety face shield: they must be worn in conjugation


with safety gloves when placing and removing crucibles
from the furnace.

f) Safety equipment’s:
 Emergency eye wash station or shower: if you
accidently spell on yourself immediately rinse affected
area either under running tap or an emergency shower.
Emergency eye wash station must be use where spills
have occurred on face or eye are. A designated analyst
check these once a month for working order according
to SOPs, quality control and safety inspections.

 Hygiene: hands should be washed thoroughly before


and after using laboratory after meal breaks and
between times. If and when they become dirty. The
touching of eye, ear, nose or mouth.is undesirable
while working with products. Any open cut or
abrasion on the exposed parts of the body must be
properly covered with a water proof dressing and
reported to occupational health and to immeginated
supervisor. Laboratory clothing should be regularly
and frequently landed any clothing that become dirty
or turns out in between laundering should be changed
immediately. No eating and drinking is allowed in
laboratory.
