EXECUTIVE BRIEF FOR THE DISSERTATION/THESIS TITLE PROPOSAL

Proponent April V. Guintu

Program Master of Education in Education Management
Proposed Topic/Title Enhancing Competency of the Kindergarten Pupils in
Reading Using Interactive Games

Motivation of the Researcher The unavailability of learning materials was one of the major
problems still hounding in teaching language literacy to
Kindergarten pupils. Teachers need to ensure that the level of
competency of their pupils match those prescribed in the
curriculum guide being followed in the said subject. Teachers
pointed out that time limitations, frustration about coordination
and collaboration with other school staff, insufficient funding,
and the lack of interest of pupils to learn about the subject
hinders them from becoming competent in teaching language
literacy. These factors have significant adverse impact on
teaching and outcomes. Teachers cannot easily remove these
barriers without full support from government, department,
community-based organizations, school and parents.
Research Gap The aim of the study is to make an evaluation of the
effectiveness of an educational game as a discussion tool in
teaching language literacy among Kindergarten pupils Divisoria
Elementary School. Furthermore, teachers’ capability to teach
the subject well in line with the intervention was also the
primordial concern. The researcher believed that teachers create
an impact as to whether or not the students have captured the
concepts of the subject every time they deliver the topics. The
interest felt by the students for the subject was generated by the
teachers.

Statement of the Problem 1. How may the participants’ competency in language

literacy be described prior to the use of intervention material?
2. How may the performance of the controlled and
experimental group in the familiarization of the subject be
described after the use of intervention material?
3. Is there a significant difference on the performance of the
pupils in controlled group and experimental group in the
familiarization of the subject before and after the use of the
traditional instruction and gamification activities in
instruction?
Research Design The study will be quasi-experimental design. The research
substituted statistical "controls" for the absence of physical
control of the experimental situation.  The most common quasi-
experimental design was the Comparison Group Pre-test/Post-
test Design where it was also employed in this study.  This
design was the same as the classic controlled experimental
design except that the subjects cannot be randomly assigned to
either the experimental or the control group, or the researcher
cannot control which group would get the treatment.  In other
words, the participants of this study do not have all the same
chance of being in the controlled or the experimental groups, or
of receiving or not receiving the treatment. When performing
an experiment, a researcher was attempting to demonstrate that
variable A influences or causes variable B to do something. As
stated by Morisson (2012), random assignment helps ensure
that there was no pre-existing condition that will influence the
variables and mess up the results.

Respondents/Participants The participants of the study are the Kindergarten pupils of

Divisoria Elemntary School, Division of Pampanga.
