EXECUTIVE BRIEF FOR THE THESIS TITLE PROPOSAL

Program Master of Arts in Education, major in Educational
Management
Proposed Topic/Title Lived Experiences of Students in Performing
Hands-on Tasks in TLE: Basis in the
Development of a New Normal Fit Module
Motivation of the Researcher Distance learning has a rapid and
significant development over the years giving a
boost to different information and communication
technology (ICT) and different media (Markova,
Glazkova, & Zaborova, 2016). Niwaz, Ahmed,
and Kamran (2019) added that distance learning is
likely to contribute to the development of society
in terms of social and economic aspects. It is no
doubt that distance learning is a favorable
alternative for those who are geographically
distant from educational institutions. On this
view, the researcher would like to look into the
lived experiences of learners in performing hands-
on learning tasks in the present condition of
education. The researcher also wants to discover
the limitations that the learners are experiencing
in performing tasks that expect them to apply
learned skills and be able to comply with the set
standard in the Technology and Livelihood
Education subject.

Research Gap Based on the related literature and studies

explored by the researcher, there is a need to
capture the experiences of learners in performing
hands-on tasks. Knowing that there is inadequacy
in the number of studies conducted among public
secondary school teachers, especially in the local
setting drove the researcher all the more to be
eager to conduct this study.

Statement of the Problem The study will be conducted to explore the lived
experiences of select public secondary school
English teachers on their use of synchronous and
asynchronous approaches in teaching select topics
in the English subject.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the

following questions:
1. What are the shared views of the
participants in performing hands-on tasks
in TLE?
2. What are the limitations encountered by
the participants on the use of the
aforementioned learning tasks in TLE?
3. How do the participants address the
limitations encountered?
4. What enhanced module in TLE may be
proposed based on the findings of the
study?

Research Design Since the nature of this study is to explore

lived experiences of participants, this study is
qualitative research that is best in analyzing non-
numerical data. According to Hammarberg,
Kirkman, and de Lacey (2016), qualitative
research methods are "used to answer questions
about experience, meaning, and perspective" from
the point of view of the participants.
The phenomenological approach will be
specifically used in this research. Barrow (2017)
said that this approach is appropriate in describing
lived experiences, which is the nature of this
research. Groenewald (2004) further explained
that this approach is the best way to understand
subjective experiences to gain insights about a
"phenomenon" from the perspectives of those who
experienced it.
Respondents/ Participants The participants in this study will be the
grade 8 students taking TLE subjects in the public
junior high schools in Lubao, Pampanga. The
sampling technique to be used in this research is
the purposive sampling technique. Although this
technique is very subjective, Dudovskiy (n.d.)
quoted that researchers are certain about coming
at obtaining the representative sample by using
"sound judgment" thereby saving "time and
money." Lavrakas (2008) also said that this
sampling method "can produce a sample that can
be logically assumed to be representative of the
population."
To select the participants using purposive
sampling, Robinson (2014) said that the
researcher should look at the commonality of the
target population. This can be achieved by setting
criteria based on the judgment or "predetermined
sampling frame" of the researcher.
