Experiment
Determine solubility of the given sample of PbSO4 conductometrically..
Theory
The Solubility product of an electrolyte may be determined from conductivity measurements.
The conductance method is application for finding the concentration of the saturated solution
provided that the salt is not hydrolysis and that solubility is not too high (sparingly soluble). As the
solubility of sparingly soluble salt is extremely low, the small quantity that dissolved in a saturated
solution may be regarded as present at infinite dilution. Thus its equivalence conductance may be
taken to the same as the as the equivalence conductance at infinite dilution. It may then be assumed
that the ions possess their limiting conductivities these must of course be known for the same
temperature, measurement of the specific conductivity of the saturated solution leads to a value
for the concentration.
Procedure
1. Prepare 50 ml of 0.1 M (M/10) standard potassium chloride solution to be used
for determining cell constant. The electrodes are washed with distilled water and
the conductance of it 50ml recorded.
3. Now take about 5g of the salt (finally powdered form) and this salt to a beaker
containing 50 cm3 hot water, shake it well so that any soluble impurities present are
completely removed.
4. Allow the solid to settle down. Pour the liquid out and repeat the above process two
or three times with fresh quantities of conductivity water to dissolve out all the
soluble impurities.
5. Then add well shaked salt to 400 Cm3 of conductivity water in a Pyrex beaker.
Shake the solution vigorously from time to time and keep it in the thermostate at the
temperature of the bath.
Calculation
1. Calculate the cell constant. Specific conductance = cell constant of KCl x observed
conductance of 0.1 M KCl, the specific conductivity for M/10 KCl at 25C = 0.01288
mhos.
2. Specific constant (Kc) for each solution.
3. Equivalent conductance for each solution by this relation, Λc = Kc 1000/C.
4. Calculate equivalent conductance Λ∞ for saturated solution by, Λ∞ = λc + λa.
5. Calculate solubility by, Λ∞ = k /s x 1000.
6. Calculate the solubility product by, Ksp = S2
Not / λc and λa it is equivalent ionic conductivities at finite dilution can be determined from
