Reforestation
The general objective of the project is the rational use of existing natural resources in the
basin, and the recovery of those that have been destroyed or overexploited. The specific
objectives are the following:
- Protect the basic structures of the Port of San Juan del Sur, avoiding the accumulation of
excessive amounts of sediment.
- Beautify the natural landscape with the purpose of encouraging regional tourism.
- Regulate the course of the San Juan River and improve the quality of its waters.
- Take advantage of the soil resources of the basin, according to their vocation and
potential.
- Develop a sustainable forest exploitation based on natural regeneration.
- Create refuge areas for wildlife in the region.
- Generate sources of employment for the local population.
The development of the project is based on the use of natural regeneration to manage an
irregular forest in an area of 2,810 hectares. However, efforts will be concentrated on an
area of 1,940 hectares, corresponding to the production area. The difference of 870
hectares corresponds to the protection area, which is distributed along the banks of the
channels and rivers. As a complement, artificial enrichment with native species is
contemplated in those areas where natural regeneration is not enough. The project would
be executed in three stages: awareness phase, experimental phase, and development
phase.
It contains three important phases:
a. Awareness phase
To support the forestry program, it is necessary to carry out an awareness campaign with
the aim of raising awareness among farmers about the nature of the problem to be
solved, its possible solutions and the benefits that will be obtained in the development of
the project.
b. Experimental phase
This stage includes the development of activities on an experimental basis, and includes
the following aspects:
- Delimitation of protection areas to avoid their alteration.
- Beginning of experiences on enrichment methods, which will be aimed at searching for
appropriate forest species, optimal sowing dates and adequate planting methods.
- Trials on silvicultural practices in existing forests and those established by natural
regeneration.
c. Development phase
For the development of the forestry program, three priorities have been established,
which are described below:
- First priority. It covers an area of 870 hectares and includes the reforestation of the
margins of the main channels (150 meters on both sides). Only part of this area is
considered exploitable.
- Second priority. It occupies an area of 255 hectares located in the most rugged lands of
the landscape; These lands require urgent treatment and will serve as propaganda for the
project once they are reforested.
- Third priority. It includes the rest of the area to be reforested, which is 1,685 hectares,
although only part of it is considered exploitable.
