PROBABILITY YEAR 10

COVERING CHAPTERS 5A, 5E, 5F

• Probability is a number between 0 and 1 assigned to a event. This number indicates
how likely this event is to occur.

DEFINITIONS:
• A trial is a single occurrence of a change experiment, such as rolling a single die, or
flipping a coin.
• Sample space is a list of possible scenarios for a certain experiment or trial.

• Outcome is a possible result of the experiment.

• Event is a list of favourable outcomes.
• Equally likely outcomes have the same chances of occurring. I.e., rolling dice,
flipping coin, next baby being a boy etc.

Probability of an event occurring can be given by the equation:

Arrays in Two-step experiments and Tree diagrams.

• Probability of A or B = A + B
• Probability of A and B = A x B
