One of the key thoughts of Hinduism is “atman,” or the belief in soul. This
philosophy holds that living creatures have a soul, and they’re all part of the supreme
soul. The goal is to achieve “moksha,” or salvation, which ends the cycle
of rebirths to become part of the absolute soul.
Hindus revere all living creatures and consider the cow a sacred
animal. There are two primary symbols associated with Hinduism, the om
and the swastika. The word swastika means "good fortune" or "being happy" in
Sanskrit, and the symbol represents good luck. The om symbol is composed of three
Sanskrit letters and represents three sounds (a, u and m), which when combined are
considered a sacred sound. The om symbol is often found at family shrines and in
Hindu temples.
Buddhism is a faith that was founded by Siddhartha Gautama (“the Buddha”) more
than 2,500 years ago in India. With about 470 million followers, scholars consider
Buddhism one of the major world religions. Buddhism believes that life is not a bed of
roses but instead, there are suffering, pain and frustrations.
The religion’s founder, Buddha, is considered an extraordinary man, but not a god .
The word Buddha means “enlightened.” Followers of Buddhism don’t acknowledge a
supreme god or deity. They instead focus on achieving enlightenment—a state of inner
peace and wisdom. The path to enlightenment is attained by utilizing morality,
meditation and wisdom. There are two types of meditation; samatha and vipassana.
Samatha is a practiced as mindfulness breathing and
development of loving-kindness. Vipassana practices
aims at developing insight into reality.
Some scholars don’t recognize Buddhism as an
organized religion, but rather, a “way of life” or a
“spiritual tradition.”
Confucianism
Confucianism is a philosophy and belief system from ancient
China, which laid the foundation for much of Chinese culture.
Confucius was a philosopher and teacher who
lived from 551 to 479 B.C.E. His thoughts
on ethics, good behavior, and moral character
were written down by his disciples in several
books, the most important being the Lunyu. Confucianism believes in
ancestor worship and human-centered virtues for living a peaceful life. The
golden rule of Confucianism is “Do not do unto others what you would not
want others to do unto you.”
Abraham’s son Isaac, and his grandson Jacob, also became central
figures in ancient Jewish history. Jacob took the name Israel, and his children and
future generations became known as Israelites.
The Quran (or Koran) is the major holy text of Islam . The
Hadith is another important book. Muslims also revere some
material found in the Judeo-Christian Bible . Followers worship
Allah by praying and reciting the Quran. They believe there will
be a day of judgment, and life after death.
