Pre-Med Junior Fieldwork/ Certification Reflective Journal:

Name:
Kaitlyn Bodtker

A/B Day:
B-Day

Advisory Teacher:
Mrs.Rohan

Which of the following can you reflect on for this journal:

● Fieldwork, CPR, or Mental Health Certification? (Specify which in the box below)
CPR Certification

1. What is the public health function the organization/agency addresses?

(Assessment, Policy Development, Assurance)
Red cross??

2. What preconceived ideas (personal bias) did you have about the location or
certification?

I think that they did a great job at teaching us

Closely Read your Surroundings:

Reflect on the following observations you made during your experience::
● sensory details
● signs posted
● languages you hear
● text used
● presenters
● colors of the offices and uniforms.
● does the location have a certain smell?
● what sounds do you hear?
2

What can you remember of your observations from your fieldwork/ certification based on
any of the above “close reading” ideas?

Observations:: The guy who was teaching our class is a paramedic and showed us/talked
about the things he carries even when he is not working, just in case of an emergency. For
an example he carries around a plastic mouthpiece to use in mouth to mouth.

Consider your Responses:

Reflect on your emotional and physical reactions during the experience.
Observations:: During our CPR training it was a very hands on learning experience was
amazing because it helped me gain the information a lot better.

Were you left with questions/ concerns after your experience?

- general questions of interest
- relating to your potential career choices
- public health-related issues and challenges they see as important to consider.

Observations:: No, after the two day training I learned a lot and didn’t have any questions.

Summary Reflection
Reflect on specific highlights or observations from the day. What was a lesson (big or small)
you took away from your experience? Consider lessons that presented themselves in both
positive and negative ways.
Reflection:: Overall the whole experience was great and one thing I learned and took
from the two day training was how to make a homemade tourniquet from home if
needed. The huge thing was how to get the heimlich if someone was choking and how
to give CPR.

How did the experience meet, exceed, or fall short of your expectations? Explain and
include specific details (to the best of your ability) to help support your answer.
Reflection:: This experience has exceeded my expectations because when I heard we
were doing first aid and CPR training I knew that we would have used dolls to practice
on but, I was not expecting to also use baby dolls and how to use an AED. If I’m being
honest I didn’t really know what an AED was before our training.

What connection can be made between what you saw or experienced and the functions of
Public Health?
Some suggestions are:
- the role of public health within this career path
- public health needs or challenges within the field you observed
3

- thoughts on how to address these needs

Reflection:: These skills being used in Public Health is great and not just for
emergency response teams but for an example in a video that was shown in an
antique store the women knew what to do when the boy cut his arm because she did
first aid training. When doing this she also kept the family calm.

Lastly, given our current circumstances with the Covid19 virus, how do you see your
fieldwork or certification applicable?
Reflection:: Tying this together with Covid19 is a good thing to think about because this
virus can affect your lungs so if you stop breathing the people who are trained can
help you breathe again with CPR. Of course you would want to use protection
between your mouths before doing this but it can come in handy.
