Pre-Med Junior Fieldwork/ Certification Reflective Journal:

Name:
Cristina Brady

A/B Day:
B day

Advisory Teacher:
Vinson

Which of the following can you reflect on for this journal:
● Fieldwork, CPR, or Mental Health Certification? (Specify which in the box below)
CPR

1. What is the public health function the organization/agency addresses?
(Assessment, Policy Development, Assurance)
Assessment

2. What preconceived ideas (personal bias) did you have about the location or
certification?

I didn’t think it was going to be hard but I knew it wasn’t going to be easy because of how
physical it is.

Closely Read your Surroundings:
Reflect on the following observations you made during your experience::
● sensory details
● signs posted
● languages you hear
● text used
● presenters
● colors of the offices and uniforms.
● does the location have a certain smell?
● what sounds do you hear?

What can you remember of your observations from your fieldwork/ certification based on
any of the above “close reading” ideas?

Observations: The instructors were very clear with what we had to do. It was loud from all
of the groups working together. There were many objects visible to work with and use to
practice CPR.

Consider your Responses:
Reflect on your emotional and physical reactions during the experience.
Observations:: I remember I was really tired that day but I didn’t let that affect my
experience with this training. I realized how physically and mentally aware you have to be
to perform CPR the right way..

Were you left with questions/ concerns after your experience?
- general questions of interest
- relating to your potential career choices
- public health-related issues and challenges they see as important to consider.

Observations:: I feel like at the moment I had questions, but I can’t remember what exactly I
was curious about. A concern I have for CPR is me not being able to perform it correctly
when it comes down to a real life situation.

Summary Reflection
Reflect on specific highlights or observations from the day. What was a lesson (big or small)
you took away from your experience? Consider lessons that presented themselves in both
positive and negative ways.
Reflection:: The CPR training really put me in the position of an EMT or other medical
worker. You realize how life or death these scenarios are, and how focused you need to
be. It really proved how one cares deeply about another's life even if they don’t have a
clue who they’re giving chest compressions to.

How did the experience meet, exceed, or fall short of your expectations? Explain and
include specific details (to the best of your ability) to help support your answer.
Reflection:: I believe that the CPR training I did a few months back met my
expectations and gave me the information needed to perform CPR. They provided us
with mannequins and objects for our practice. It went really well.

What connection can be made between what you saw or experienced and the functions of
Public Health?
Some suggestions are:
3

- the role of public health within this career path

- public health needs or challenges within the field you observed
- thoughts on how to address these needs
Reflection:: Performing CPR is definitely something to know when working in the
medical industry. It is important because it is your job to take care of people and their
needs. If you didn’t not know how to do chest compressions it would be difficult to do
your job with full assurance. .

Lastly, given our current circumstances with the Covid19 virus, how do you see your
fieldwork or certification applicable?
Reflection:: In the event of this CoronaVirus, if I was around someone who got
physically sick from this virus and collapsed, I could help them until the professionals
came.
