Pre-Med Junior Fieldwork/ Certification Reflective Journal:

Name:
Isaac Ortiz

A/B Day:
B day

Advisory Teacher:
Ms. Rohan

Which of the following can you reflect on for this journal:
● Fieldwork, CPR, or Mental Health Certification? (Specify which in the box below)
CPR

1. What is the public health function the organization/agency addresses?
(Assessment, Policy Development, Assurance)
Assessment: The CPR teachings had us learn of the basics to assist people who are in a
difficult situation, be it medical injury, choking, allergic reaction, and so forth.
Policy Development: As while we were taught to save a person in the right timing, we are
liable to possible suing if the person being assisted were injured more or killed.
Assurance: We once taught should be able to assess a situation and deem it whether
viable or not for us to insert ourselves for assistance.

2. What preconceived ideas (personal bias) did you have about the location or
certification?

I believed it to have originally been of only assisting a person if they were struggling to
breathe and how can just do it without thinking of any liability.

Closely Read your Surroundings:
Reflect on the following observations you made during your experience::
● sensory details: How to listen and see if a person needed help
● signs posted: I do not recall any involved
● languages you hear: There were not many terms used from recollection, though the
casualness did help with better memory.
● text used: No recollection of any specifics
● Presenters: Both were from different backgrounds, though they all were able to give
a different insight of all different protocols of action
2

● colors of the offices and uniforms: Everyone had casual clothing, so it made it seem
more casual and fun in its own way
● does the location have a certain smell?: No certain smell
● What sounds do you hear?: The kind to see if a person was choking or are in pain

What can you remember of your observations from your fieldwork/ certification based on
any of the above “close reading” ideas?

Observations:: My whole experience was based with casualty where information was easy
to understand with no real stress to be knowledgeable to a certain level.

Consider your Responses:
Reflect on your emotional and physical reactions during the experience.
Observations:: Due to my experience of casualness with the whole thing, I felt no
emotional reaction, though I do respect the idea of how I can better help anyone in a dire
situation.

Were you left with questions/ concerns after your experience?
- general questions of interest
- relating to your potential career choices
- public health-related issues and challenges they see as important to consider.

Observations:: Not really, as when I did during the presentations, someone would always
ask the question in my head.

Summary Reflection
Reflect on specific highlights or observations from the day. What was a lesson (big or small)
you took away from your experience? Consider lessons that presented themselves in both
positive and negative ways.
Reflection::I would say I learned two lessons from the presentations, one was to always
be calm even in the most dire situations, and the second is to always respect when a
situation does not call for you to intervene. The first was when I learned why paramedics
always walk to an injured person and the other was from learning the possible
liability/endangerment you could possibly place on yourself.

How did the experience meet, exceed, or fall short of your expectations? Explain and
include specific details (to the best of your ability) to help support your answer.
3

Reflection:: I honestly did not have any real expectations, though I guess I was glad to
not have it be a bad experience. It also was pretty entertaining to practice how to do
the Heimlich Maneuver.

What connection can be made between what you saw or experienced and the functions of
Public Health?
Some suggestions are:
- the role of public health within this career path
- public health needs or challenges within the field you observed
- thoughts on how to address these needs
Reflection:: From how the presenters talked, it seemed what we learned were the very
basics of their experience and they must have dealt with more unstable situations.
The dvd info, while informal, seems a bit behind the time and could make it difficult
for any of us to better understand any serious situations.

Lastly, given our current circumstances with the Covid19 virus, how do you see your
fieldwork or certification applicable?
Reflection:: As having a certificate of CPR, I would see my abilities to be irrelevant, as
social distancing is highly advised, so the best of my learned knowledge is deduction,
as I should be able to know who to avoid and when.
