Laboratory Exercise 1. Familiarizing your PC

I. Objectives :
a. To become familiar with the O.S. Environment;
b. To become familiar with the hardware of your computer

II. Discussion

Windows is the most common operating system used for PCs. It is essential that you familiarize
yourself with the basic functionality of this OS.

It is necessary that you are aware of the hardware in your computer. While the operating system
usually takes care of the complexity of managing the hardware of your computer system, knowing
the hardware helps when you have to:
1) Install an operating system
2) Upgrade your computer system
3) Diagnose and repair problems in your computer system

Laboratory Drill No. 1.

1. Create a new folder name it ES112. Under new folder create another 2 folders name it DAY1 &
DAY2.
2. Open the MS word program. Create a new file. Save it with a filename DAY1_exe1 in the folder
DAY2.
3. Open the MS excel program. Create a new file. Save it with a filename DAY2_exe2 in the folder
DAY1
4. Select any image file found/saved in the PC and copy it to both folders DAY1 & DAY2.

Questions :
a. What is the command to move the folder DAY1 out of the ES112 folder?

5. Look for the My computer icon, right click and select properties

7. Click on the Hardware tab. Select device manager. Note / observe the contents.

8. Close all dialog boxes and right click the mouse anywhere in the desktop screen. Select sort by
name.

9. Change the mouse pointer style.
10. Change the desktop background. Open 3 application programs and cascade the windows.
