The previous lessons taught us how to select properly the tools by knowing and
understanding the details of work to be accomplished. It also discussed the different hardware
tools like Hand Tools – device that uses hands to performed work; Electro-Static Discharge
Tools – used to control static electricity generated by friction on the floorings, clothing, hair and
etc.; Cleaning Tools – used to clean in maintaining and repairing computers; and Diagnostic
Tools – which is used to diagnose the problems of computers.
Proper use, maintenance and storage of these tools were also explained not only keep you
safe upon using it but also to make them last for years.

DIRECTIONS: Give two (2) examples of each hardware tools. Write your answer
on the space provided below.

A. Hand tools- _______________, ____________________

B. Electro-Static Discharge tools- __________________, __________________
C. Diagnostic tools- ________________, _______________

Have you ever thought about how computers
understand us? How does it work inside the system
unit? Computers convert all the letters, numbers
and special characters that we type from its
keyboard into a series of 1s and 0s so that it will
know the data and process it to provide us a
meaningful and useful output that is converted to
the language that we understand. But did you know
how it stores and processes data? The different kinds of memory and storage
drives? The difference between memory and storage drives or devices? Well, let’s
find out!
Memory is any form of electronic storage that stores data temporarily
where CPU (Central Processing Unit) can access it quickly. There are two major
kinds of memory: 1) Read-Only Memory (ROM) chips contain basic instructions
like booting the computer and loading the Operating System that can be directly
accessed by the CPU; 2) Random Access Memory (RAM) is volatile temporary
storage for data and programs that being accessed by the CPU and the contents
are erased when the computer is powered off.
While Storage Drives read or write information either magnetic or optical
storage media, it also stores data permanently or to
retrieve information from a media disk. Magnetic
storage drives use "read/write heads," electromagnets that
detect (read) or change (write) the magnetization patterns
on the disk. Optical storage drives use lasers to read the
reflections in the disk or "burn" the data pattern into the disks. Both magnetic
and optical drives are manufactured with different interfaces that are used to
connect the drive to the computer.

Conversion of Decimal to Binary
Example Problem: Convert 25 to Binary
SOLUTION: 25 ÷ 2 = 12 Remainder 1
12 ÷ 2 = 6 Remainder 0
6÷2 = 3 Remainder 0
3÷2 = 1 Remainder 1
1÷2 = 0 Remainder 1
NOTE:
Write the REMAINDER in upward manner to get the value of 25 to BINARY.
The BINARY value of 25 is 1 1 0 0 1
Conversion of Binary to Decimal
Example Problem: Convert 1 0 1 0 1 to Decimal
SOLUTION:
STEP 1. Create a table then write
16 + 4 + 1 Decimal
the equivalent decimal value on the 1: = 21 Value
first row. 2:
STEP 2. Place the binary to its
3:
equivalent decimal value on the second row.
STEP 3. Add all the values having 1 from the second row
of the table to get the DECIMAL value of 1 0 1 0 1 which is 21.

NOTE:
If binary digits exceeds to five, multiply 16 by 2 to get 32, then multiply 32 by 2 to
get 64 and continue multiplying to reach the number of binary digits.

Activity 3 ADS

DIRECTION: Classify the DO’s and DONT’s on proper maintenance of

measuring instruments by placing the numbers on the space provided below.

DO’S DONT’S

1. Proper lubrication of measuring instruments will prevent damage due to

corrosion and oxidation.

2. Always wipe not only the measuring faces of your tools, but of the work
piece being measured as well.

3. Always keep your tools used for measuring at extreme heat room
temperature.

4. The storage location should have destructive elements.

5. Stack measuring instruments on top of each other even without well-

protected cases.

6. Do not drop, throw or bang measuring instruments against hard surfaces.

7. Measuring tools will provide you with years of dependable services if you
will not care for them properly.

8. Your measuring tools should be cleaned regularly, ideally once a year.

9. Some measuring instruments require occasional recalibration to ensure

they continue to function as designed.
