INTRODUCTION

Clustro.ph is a small business selling a variety of handmade merchandise of well-loved

anime and cartoon shows thought up together by a group of nine students from SRCCMSTHS.

It was in the first zoom meeting that we chose this business among the ideas of school

supplies and food focused businesses. Pitching in ideas for the themes, what name should we

go with, envisioning our business as a happy workplace with lots of orders and income, the

recurring 40-minute zoom meeting every Friday was something we looked forward to. But, as

time passed by, things got serious and we were bombarded with deadlines, insufficient funds,

lack of customers and difficulties regarding our products and current set-up. Realization

dawned on our thick skulls that this isn’t going to be easy at all like how we thought it would be.

But, there were nine of us against the challenge. Like cogs, we tried to make this a

successful one as we do our best in the roles assigned to us. In this document, narratives of

how we made this happen and details like our business model canvas and income statement

will be imprinted. That perhaps someday, we may be reminded once again of the days the nine

of us took a certain challenge head on.

We first operated as a nine-member

team last November 3, 2020 when we arranged

a zoom meeting to brainstorm on what our

business should be about and soon after, we

went with our common-ground: anime and

cartoons. Anime and Cartoon shows are really

popular nowadays within our peers and we all

looked forward to combining our interests with

our business. We made a survey on what

(Google sheet tally)
themes we should go with, letting our schoolmates vote among 10+ themes, after tallying the

votes, we went with “Haikyuu” (a volleyball anime), “Attack on Titan” (an anime centered on

giant creatures called titans), and “We bare bears” (a cartoon with a grizzly bear, panda bear

and polar bear). We agreed on using them as a design for our products: facemask case,

earrings, bracelet and keychain.

On November 13, 2020, we decided to name our business. Some of our initial name

ideas were anitopia.ph, animify, and eminamerch. But, after a

series of voting , we went with clustro.ph, from the word

“clusters” as suggested by Hanz. In the same meeting, we

formulated our value proposition based on Geoff Moore’s value

positioning statement, applying what we learned in our

(Clustro.ph logo designed by Niccolo)
Entrepreneurship class. We also agreed to pitch in 450 pesos

each, amounting to 4,050 as our capital.

—8—
We discussed the equipment, tools and  raw materials that will be needed for the

production of our products on Shopee. Some of those materials are ink for the printer, resin,

jump rings, facemask case, etc. While checking it out, we canvass the prices and quality of

each material. The materials need to be canvassed so that we know what must be bought.

November 21, 2020— we initiated the opening of our business by distributing the tasks

among us members.

Considering how four of us are not in Metro Manila, we formed two groups to make this work:

the working group and the managing group. Juliette is assigned to design the products and

slogan for social media. Mary Rose is assigned to manage and promote our business on social

media sites. Niccolo is in charge of arranging the shipment of the products and recording our

sales and stocks. Hanz is

in charge of interacting

with customers and

answering queries about

our business. While

Alianah, Nicole, Abil,

Errol, and Marcus are (Group 2 zoom meeting every Friday)

assigned to make, package

and finalize the products, as they are the people who can keep in touch in Manila.

But, unfortunately, a group meet-up isn’t possible due to the quarantine protocols so at

the first day of making the products, Alianah was the only member to meet up with Nicole and

get started on the products. Juliette provided a document with the prototype of each product

—9—
and their themes while Alianah printed the designs on a shrink paper using the printer ink we

bought before going to Nicole's. Alianah and Nicole got started on heating the shrink papers in

the oven. They only made 5 charms with varying color properties to experiment on the

appropriate look. At the same time, they were video calling Juliette on Messenger for she is

incharge of editing the designs and controlling the color properties to be sent as a file. After

getting appropriate printouts, they put resin on the charms and let them dry overnight.

The next day, Alianah wasn’t able to go to Nicole's house so Nicole volunteered to get

started on putting the products in the chain. But, after letting the

charms with resin dry overnight, Nicole informed us immediately

that the print was washed out by the resin. After a week of

brainstorming on the group chat, we immediately fixed the

problems by placing a normal paper printout, covering it with tape, (Failed shrink charm)

then placing the resin as the finisher.

For our final production of items,

step one was printing the layout on a

plastic sheet called shrink paper and also

on bond papers. After the printing is done

on the shrink paper, they are cut into

separate pieces piercing a hole on top for

the jump ring and then put inside the

oven to heat up and start the shrinking

process. When the designed shrink

(Clustro.ph Facebook page) paper is shrunk, we place the designed

— 10 —
bond paper on top, cover it with tape and then add resin on top so that it will look glossy and

finished. We inserted the jump rings for them to be used as charms. We also made small paper

packages for each keychain, bracelet and earring. Meanwhile, plain facemask cases were

ordered and then designing them with a sticker on top was how we made our facemask case

merch.

After the production was finalized, we

got our first three orders. Errol, Alianah, Abil,

and Marcus met up at Errol's house. It gave us

an advantage that Alianah, Errol, Abil, and

Marcus are neighbors but, unfortunately, Nicole

is not, so she was tasked to collaborate with

Mary Rose in promoting our social media

sites. Everybody participated in sharing news

and content about our business. Mary Rose and

Nicole being hands-on with their task.

(What you see when you open the box)

Clustro.ph sells in a way that we make bundle

deals for every package, with every bundle having its own

unique names and prices from a small one to a large one.

Many people inquire about those bundles and Hanz

diligently explains the difference between Alpha package,

(Clustro.ph Thank you card)
Beta package and Omega package. After the products are

made, we make our own packaging consisting of a corrugated box, the small folded papers for

the products, a paper to cover the products, a thank you card, the jute string to tie the package

— 11 —
and also including our designed and named logo for the packaging of the products as we

package it properly with care. After the whole process of producing the product, we ship it to

Shopee through the help of Niccolo as he prepares the shipment of the products. Shopee is an

online selling platform that we chose because it is convenient for our business, especially in

accumulating feedback and communicating with our buyers.

The operation continued for a while, as Abil, Alianah, Marcus, Nicole and Errol do their

best to provide good quality products. Like cogs, we did our best in our own roles to make this

work. Kudos to our leader, Alianah, for being an all-rounder in every process and for guiding us

accordingly. The entire set up was hard for all of us as we can only communicate as a

complete group through online messages and video calls. But, we survived and succeeded in

taking this form of challenge. The nine of us will surely celebrate this accomplishment.

CONCLUSION

Through hard work and perseverance, we managed our business to become

prosperous. We have established our own business name and the creativity of our products,

we accepted the challenge that was given to us, choosing to face it head on. This kind of

experience will serve as a guide in the future if we want to establish our own business. Always

remember that success is not given, all you need is to make necessary changes to bring that

out. Make the year your best year.
