Honeywell Materials License Agreement

The documents and information contained herein ("the Materials") are the proprietary data of
Honeywell International Inc. and Honeywell Intellectual Properties Inc. (collectively "Honeywell").
These Materials are provided for the exclusive use of Honeywell Service Centers;
Honeywell-authorized repair facilities; operators of Honeywell aerospace products subject to an
applicable product support agreement, their wholly owned-subsidiaries or a formally designated
third party service provider thereunder; and direct recipients of Materials from Honeywell's
Aerospace Technical Publication Distribution. The terms and conditions of this License Agreement
govern your use of these Materials, except to the extent that any terms and conditions of another
applicable agreement with Honeywell regarding the operation, maintenance, or repair of Honeywell
aerospace products conflict with the terms and conditions of this License Agreement, in which case
the terms and conditions of the other agreement will govern. However, this License Agreement will
govern in the event of a conflict between its terms and conditions and those of a purchase order or
acknowledgement.

1. License Grant - If you are a party to an applicable product support agreement, a Honeywell Service
Center agreement, or an authorized repair facility agreement, Honeywell hereby grants you a limited,
non-exclusive license to use these Materials to operate, maintain, or repair Honeywell aerospace products
only in accordance with that agreement.

If you are a direct recipient of these Materials from Honeywell's Aerospace Technical Publication
Distribution and are not a party to an agreement related to the operation, maintenance or repair of
Honeywell aerospace products, Honeywell hereby grants you a limited, non-exclusive license to use these
Materials to maintain or repair the subject Honeywell aerospace products only at the facility to which these
Materials have been shipped ("the Licensed Facility"). Transfer of the Materials to another facility owned
by you is permitted only if the original Licensed Facility retains no copies of the Materials and you provide
prior written notice to Honeywell.

2. Rights In Materials - Honeywell retains all rights in these Materials and in any copies thereof that are
not expressly granted to you, including all rights in patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets. No
license to use any Honeywell trademarks or patents is granted under this License Agreement.

3. Confidentiality - You acknowledge that these Materials contain information that is confidential and
proprietary to Honeywell. You agree to take all reasonable efforts to maintain the confidentiality of these
Materials.

4. Assignment And Transfer - This License Agreement may be assigned to a formally designated service
designee to the extent allowed under an applicable product support agreement or transferred to a
subsequent owner or operator of an aircraft containing the subject Honeywell aerospace products.
However, the recipient of any such assignment or transfer must assume all of your obligations under this
License Agreement. No assignment or transfer shall relieve any party of any obligation that such party then
has hereunder.

5. Copies of Materials - Unless you have the express written permission of Honeywell, you may not make
or permit making of copies of the Materials. Notwithstanding the foregoing, you may make copies of only
portions of the Material for your internal use. You agree to return the Materials and any copies thereof to
Honeywell upon the request of Honeywell.

6. Term - This License Agreement is effective until terminated as set forth herein. This License Agreement
will terminate immediately, without notice from Honeywell, if you fail to comply with any provision of this
License Agreement or will terminate simultaneously with the termination or expiration of your applicable
product support agreement, authorized repair facility agreement, or your formal designation as a third party
service provider. Upon termination of this License Agreement, you will return these Materials to Honeywell
without retaining any copies and will have one of your authorized officers certify that all Materials have been
returned with no copies retained.

7. Remedies - Honeywell reserves the right to pursue all available remedies and damages resulting from
a breach of this License Agreement.

8. Limitation of Liability - IN NO EVENT WILL HONEYWELL BE LIABLE FOR ANY INCIDENTAL

DAMAGES, CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, SPECIAL DAMAGES, INDIRECT DAMAGES, LOSS OF
PROFITS, LOSS OF REVENUES, OR LOSS OF USE, EVEN IF INFORMED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF
SUCH DAMAGES. TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, THESE LIMITATIONS AND
EXCLUSIONS WILL APPLY REGARDLESS OF WHETHER LIABILITY ARISES FROM BREACH OF
CONTRACT, WARRANTY, TORT (INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO NEGLIGENCE), BY OPERATION
OF LAW, OR OTHERWISE.

9. Controlling Law - This License shall be governed and construed in accordance with the laws of the State

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. System Description

A basic KHF 1050 HF Communication System (also known as a Primus HF 1050)

consists of three individual units: KAC 1052 Antenna Coupler, KPA 1052 Power
Amplifier, and KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter (refer to “Figure 1 - Typical System” ). A
compatible control unit is also required. Control units compatible with the system
include the PS440 (also known as Gables G7511) (refer to “Figure 2 - PS440 Control
Display Unit” ), Honeywell MC-850 Multifunction Control and Display Unit (refer to
“Figure 3 - MC-850 Multifunction Control and Display Unit (MCDU)” ) and Honeywell

1.A. System Overview

The KHF 1050 HF voice and data communication system is a solid state design
with 200 watts (PEP) of output power, operating at 28 Vdc. Frequency of operation
ranges between 2.0 and 29.9999 MHz with 100 Hz resolution. Systems may be
strapped to set the upper frequency limit to 22.9999 MHz.

The RM-855 RMU, the MC-850 MCDU, or the PS440 CDU allows the pilot to select
the frequency and mode of operation of the system and displays that information
to the pilot.

Receiver and low level transmitter signals are located in the KRX 1053
Receiver/Exciter. The KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter employs a master oscillator,
which requires a short warm-up period when operating at cool temperatures.

The KAC 1052 Power Amplifier amplifies the excitation signal from the KRX 1053
Receiver/Exciter to 200 watts PEP, or 50 watts of carrier power in AM. The
amplified signal is routed to the KAC 1052 Antenna Coupler, which matches the
various impedances of the antenna to the 50 ohm output of the transmitter. In
receive function, signals from the antenna pass through the KAC 1052 Antenna
Coupler to the KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter via the KPA 1052.

The KHF 1050 can be installed as a single or dual HF system. A configuration is

called a “dual system” when two KHF 1050 HF systems are installed in the same
aircraft to share one antenna. Both systems may receive simultaneously, but only
one system is chosen to transmit at any one time. An auto select transmit scheme
determines which system is selected to transmit. The characteristics of a dual KHF
1050 configuration are as follows:

• When one system is transmitting, reception on the other system is disabled.

• The first system (System 1 or System 2) to be keyed is selected to transmit, and
transmission from the other system is inhibited until the first system has
stopped transmitting.
• The KHF 1050 does not require any external accessories for dual system
operation other than a specially fabricated coaxial cable to allow
interconnecting the two KAC 1052 Antenna Couplers to the antenna.
• A primary advantage of a dual HF system is to provide HF-com redundancy. In
the event the pilot suspects improper operation of a dual KHF 1050 system, the
most robust performance is generally achieved by turning off one of the HF
systems. This will cause the remaining system to default to a single-system
status and potentially provide improved performance.

Page 4
Revision 6 23-10-09 Nov/2007
N
KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

When two independent HF systems employing two separate antennas are used on
one aircraft, it is important to maximize separation between the antennas. A
minimum of 6 ft. (2 m.) separation is recommended and the antennas should be
configured as orthogonally as possible.

WARNING: IN A DUAL KHF 1050 INSTALLATION, PERMANENT DAMAGE

WILL OCCUR TO THE SYSTEM IF EITHER THE RF OR CONTROL
CABLES ARE NOT CONNECTED PROPERLY BETWEEN HF1
AND HF2. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT HF1 CABLES BE COLOR
CODED RED AND HF2 CABLES BE COLOR CODED GREEN.

Several operating mode options are available for the KHF 1050 HF system to meet
particular operational needs.

USB Voice (upper sideband A3J) and AME (amplitude modulation equivalent A3H)
are standard modes of operation that should be enabled on all system
configurations.

Less commonly used functionality such as LSB, RC and Data modes are
discussed in paragraph “3.B.(1) Emission Modes” .

“Table 33 - Modes of Operation” lists the modes of operation applicable to the

PS440, MC-850, and RM-855 controllers.

The system is capable of operating in a channel (frequency preset) mode or a

direct frequency tuning mode. User channel information is stored in the controller.

“Figure 5 - Typical System Block Diagram” is a typical system block diagram. This
version of the block diagram does not attempt to show detailed interconnections
between the receiver/exciter, the power amplifier and the antenna coupler.

3. System Leading Particulars

3.A. General Specifications

The KHF 1050 HF System is a solid state design with 200 watts PEP of output
power, supplied by 28 VDC, with an operational frequency range of 2.0 to 29.9999
MHz with 100 Hz resolution. The KHF 1050 HF System has been type accepted by
the FCC and TSO approved.

3.B. System Operating Modes

3.B.(1) Emission Modes

Several operating mode options are available for the KHF 1050 HF system to
meet particular operational needs.

USB Voice (upper sideband) and AME (amplitude modulation equivalent) are
standard modes of operation that should be enabled on all system
configurations. Virtually all air traffic control communication is conducted in
USB voice mode.

LSB (lower sideband) operation is not used by stations operating in the aviation
services under FCC Part 87 (USA) regulations. LSB may be enabled for use in
regions or applications where its use is authorized.

AM or AME (amplitude modulation equivalent) may be used in some areas that

lack single-sideband (SSB) capabilities. AME is a form of amplitude modulation
that is more efficient than full AM, yet compatible with AM systems.

USB Data and LSB Data are the same as the above-mentioned USB and LSB
modes, except receiver audio and transmitter audio are connected to a
data-modem rather than to a speaker or microphone.

Page 28
Revision 6 23-10-09 Nov/2007
N
KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

A seldom used mode A3A (USB reduced carrier) is available for use in locations
that may utilize the mode. The reduced carrier (also referred to as a pilot carrier)
allows a receiving station to lock on to the transmitted carrier to minimize
frequency error.

“Table 33 - Modes of Operation” , lists the modes of operation applicable to the

Honeywell PS440, MC-850, RM-855, and the Collins RTU 4100/4200.

Note 1: When operating with an RM-855 controller, the CW
(continuous wave) mode is selectable. However, this is a
receive only function. The KHF 1050 system does not support
CW transmission.

Table 33 - Modes of Operation

3.B.(2) 23 MHz Limit Mode

The KHF 1050 HF system can be strapped to limit the frequency of operation
to an upper limit of 22.9999 MHz for certification in countries that may require
such an upper frequency limit. If using a PS440 controller, both the KRX 1053
and the PS440 must be strapped for the 23 MHz limit.

Page 29
Revision 6 23-10-09 Nov/2007
N
KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

3.B.(3) Channel Mode

When operating in the channel mode the KHF 1050 HF system can operate as
a simplex or semi-duplex communication system. Transmit and receive
frequencies are selected by selecting a pre-programmed channel.

The KHF 1050 supports three types of channel mode operation:

• User programmable channels (up to 99 channels, depending on the

controller used)
• 6 Emergency channels
• 246 ITU (Maritime Service High Seas Operator) channels

The emission mode is also part of the stored channel information.

3.B.(4) Direct Frequency Mode

When operating in the direct frequency mode the KHF 1050 HF system
operates as a basic communications system. Transmit and receive frequency
is determined by the selected frequency, which is entered directly on the control
unit.

3.B.(5) Data Mode

When the KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter is operating in the DATA mode, interface
with data modems or secure voice systems is enabled. The external modem
inputs and external modem outputs are available to bypass squelch and
compression functions in the KRX 1053. These levels are controlled by field
adjustments.

A 4 dB variation with reference to 1 KHz is possible in the audio response when

operating in the data mode.

Audio modulation from the modem is applied to the EXTERNAL MODEM

AUDIO INPUT. When the DATA KEYLINE is grounded, the transmitter
modulation is derived from the DATA AUDIO INPUT rather than from the
microphone.

3.B.(6) SELCAL Mode

NOTE: SELCAL mode requires a SELCAL decoder, not supplied.

SELCAL (SELective CALling) may be used to relieve background noises during

flight. The volume may be turned down completely while the system maintains
a watch for a SELCAL coded audio signal.

Page 30
Revision 6 23-10-09 Nov/2007
N
KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

When a decoded SELCAL signal is received, a call waiting is indicated. The

SELCAL decoder generates an audio alert for the crew.

The SELCAL AUDIO OUTPUT is connected to the external SELCAL decoder.

Regardless of the operating mode selected by the pilot, the SELCAL AUDIO
OUTPUT is derived from an AM receiver inside the KRX 1053.

Antenna Matching
Capability:
Wire Antenna: 10 to 25 feet grounded (55,000 feet maximum altitude).

25 to 30 feet may be grounded or ungrounded. If ungrounded,

30,000 feet max altitude.

30 to 75 feet ungrounded (30,000 feet maximum altitude)

Shunt Antenna Typically leading edges of the vertical stabilizer 10 feet or
longer.
Internal Protection: High SWR due to change in antenna impedance will force a
retune. An internal bleeder resistor provides a static discharge
path to ground.

Should the coupler not be able to tune the antenna at a given

frequency, a tune fault will result after the coupler has
attempted different network configurations to tune the antenna.

Notes:
1) Unless otherwise noted, receiver input levels are specified in “hard” uV, which includes a 6 dB
attenuator between the signal generator and the receiver. As such, the voltage at the receiver terminals is
one half the "hard" microvolts read on the signal generator.
2) Internally generated receiver spurious responses may degrade sensitivity below those specified on a
limited number of frequencies. A sensitivity of less than 6 dB signal/noise for a 2 uV SSB input signal may
be noted on some channels outside the frequency limits of the aeronautical mobile band (25 MHz Limit)
and maritime mobile bands. Equivalent degradation may be noted in the AM mode. Contact Honeywell
Product Support (913-712-0600) regarding specific frequencies of interest.
3) The KHF 1050 system is FCC certified under Parts 87 and 90 for J2D, J3D, H2D and H3D modes of

KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

4.A. System Functional Overview

The KHF 1050 HF Communication System supports a wide variety of

communication requirements. The major components of the KHF 1050 HF system
are listed below:

• KAC 1052 Antenna Coupler

• KPA 1052 Power Amplifier
• KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter
• Compatible Control Display Unit (CDU)

The basic KHF 1050 HF system is a mobile communication system for aircraft. It
operates in a frequency range between 2.0 and 29.9999 MHz offering several
different emission modes to provide voice communication.

By including the appropriate components in an installation, the KHF 1050 HF

system capabilities can be increased to allow the system to support Data, SELCAL,
and Secure Voice communication.
4.A.(1) System Power UP

Power-up is installation and controller dependant.

• PS440 - Press the Volume Control knob.

• MC-850 - Access the ON/OFF function from the second HF page, if so

configured.

• RM-855 - An ON/OFF Switch is not provided on the RM-855. An external

switch may be used.

Some installations may be configured to turn the KHF 1050 system “ON”
whenever the Avionics Master switch is turned “ON”. However, it is preferable
to provide a means of applying power to the KHF 1050 system so that the
system can be turned “OFF” on flights when HF communications is not
required.

TESTING AND FAULT ISOLATION

1. Fault Isolation

Fault isolation locates the source of system failure at the black box or aircraft wiring
level. Fault isolation is typically performed on the ground in response to failures
indicated during post-installation checkout, preflight testing, or flight operation.

Perform the System Performance Check (Paragraph “2. System Performance Check”
) and refer to the Fault Isolation Checklist (Paragraph “3. Fault Isolation Checklist” ) for
fault isolation in the KHF 1050 HF system.

2. System Performance Check

The system check detects problems in the installation that may cause the HF system
to fail, to degrade performance, or cause damage to the HF system, such as:

• Intermittent or improperly connected cables or connectors.

• Defective units.

• Poorly regulated aircraft DC power.

• Poor grounding of KHF 1050 HF system or poor aircraft bonding.

• Audio ground loops.

• RF interference.

CAUTION: POWER CARTS MAY REGULATE POORLY WHEN SUBJECTED TO

STRONG RF FIELDS. IF MORE THAN 20% FLUCTUATIONS IN
POWER CART VOLTAGES ARE NOTED WHEN TRANSMITTING, DO
NOT CONTINUE TESTING WITH POWER CART.

CAUTION: SOME INTERMITTENT CONDITIONS MAY CAUSE OUTPUT

TRANSISTORS TO FAIL, THEREFORE TRANSMIT ONLY AFTER
OTHER CHECKS HAVE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED.

Perform the steps in the stated sequence.

KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

2.A. Preliminary Check

1. Prior to turning the system ON, ensure that all connectors are properly seated
in their proper location.

2. Turn the system ON. As the system turns ON it performs a brief self-test.

NOTE: While a turn-on or pilot-activated test is taking place, an indication will be

available to the pilot indicating a test is in progress. For example, in the
case of the PS440, all of the display segments will be activated on the
panel. An RM-855 will display “TEST”, followed by a momentary display of
“HF PASS” or “HF ERR”.

Normally, after a few seconds, the HF controller (or HF window of a

multi-function controller) will show an HF operating frequency, mode of
operation and other operating parameters. Refer to the operating manual for
the specific controller for specific operation and the information available on the
display.

3. Push the TEST button on the controller to perform a system test. The
pilot-activated self-test takes approximately 15 seconds to complete.

4. KXR 1053 Receiver/Exciter Built-In-Test

The receiver/exciter design incorporates provisions for monitoring its own

operation to detect any condition or occurrence that the operator (a flight crew
member) might observe and interpret as a reason for requesting a maintenance
action.

These maintenance observations are stored in non-volatile memory within the

receiver/exciter so they can be retrieved with appropriate test equipment.

If a serious fault is detected, the “receiver/exciter status” bit of the Maintenance

Status message, label 351, is set to indicate a fault.

The KHF 1050 maintenance data collection provision includes the following
three types of monitoring: Power-On, Continuous Monitoring and Pilot Initiated
Tests. The BITE tests that typically are performed at system turn-on, at pilot
activated, or continuously are summarized in “Table 1001 - RX/EX BITE
Matrix” . The table shows which tests are performed for each of the three types
of monitoring.

NOTE: A Collins RTU 4100/4200 Radio Tuning Unit does not allow for Power-On
and Continuous Built-In-Test functions. Only pilot initiated tests results are
available in a numeric-coded format.

5. KPA 1052 Power Amplifier Built-In-Test

The power amplifier design incorporates provisions for monitoring its own
operation to detect any condition or occurrence that the operator (a flight crew
member) might observe and interpret as a reason for requesting a
maintenance action.

The maintenance data collection provision includes the following three types of
monitoring: Power-On Test, Conditions Monitoring and Initiated test, as defined
below.

PA Alarm 1 - This alarm will be generated whenever the SWR at the output of
the power amplifier is too high. The antenna coupler will try to retune to lower
SWR during transmit mode.

PA Alarm 2 - This alarm will be generated whenever an invalid band error

request occurs, a higher than normal SWR within the PA is generated, a higher
than normal output power occurs, an over-temperature condition exists, or the
PA has no output power. This alarm inhibits all transmissions.

The BITE tests that are performed at system turn-on, at pilot activated or
continuously are summarized in “Table 1002 - PA BITE Matrix” .

The antenna coupler design incorporates provisions for monitoring its own
operation to detect any condition or occurrence that the operator (a flight crew
member) might observe and interpret as a reason for requesting a
maintenance action.

These maintenance observations are stored in non-volatile memory within the

KHF 1050 system so they can be retrieved with appropriate test equipment.

If the maintenance observation is serious enough to indicate Antenna Coupler

failure, the failure shall be communicated to the receiver/exciter for reporting to
the HF controller.

7. In the event that a problem is detected during either the turn-on test or the
pilot-activated self-test, an error message will appear on the controller. The
error message may indicate a failure of one or more of the following:

• Controller
• Receiver/Exciter
• Power Amplifier
• Antenna Coupler

Refer to Paragraph “3. Fault Isolation Checklist” . Some of the BITE functions
may not be operational on early production units.

2.B. Failure Indications

Various failure messages can be displayed in response to system malfunctions

that are detected by the Built-In-Test. The exact message that is displayed is
dependant on the type of the controller used. For example, when using a RM-855,
a failure results in an “ERR” message being displayed to the pilot on the Radio
Page and a RTU 4100/4200 displays only a numeric code. However a PS440
provides more detailed information as defined below. It is possible that more than
one unit will show as being failed, even if only a single problem exists.

Depending on the nature of the failure, the failure messages that would appear on
a PS440 controller are:

• PANEL: Control Panel Failure. If there is a failure internal to the PS440, the
bottom row on the display will show PANEL.

• FAIL RXEX: Receiver/Exciter Failure. This indicates a failure in the Receiver

exciter or its interconnections, a loss of DC power to the unit or a loss of
communication between the KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter and the Controller.

• FAIL PA: Power Amplifier Failure. The FAIL PA message indicates a problem
in the KAC 1052, a loss of DC power to the unit or interconnection problems to
that unit.

• FAIL CPLR: Antenna Coupler Failure. This indicates a failure in the KAC 1052
Antenna Coupler or its interconnections, a loss of DC power to the unit or
problems in the communication between the Antenna Coupler and the
Receiver/Exciter.

• PRS W: Antenna Coupler Pressure Warning. Pressure inside the Antenna

Coupler is significantly below normal. Service should be preformed soon. See
Section “10.A.(2) KAC 1052 Pressurization” for pressurization information.

Page 1005
Revision 6 23-10-09 Nov/2007
N
KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

• PRS F: Antenna Coupler Pressure Failure. The pressure has been severely
reduced and the transmitter power has been reduced to 50 Watts. The antenna
coupler requires immediate service. See Section “10.A.(2) KAC 1052
Pressurization” for pressurization information.

When using an RM-855 controller, a failure will result in an “ERR” message being
displayed. More detailed failure information can be found on the Maintenance Log
page.

• ER 18, PA HOT is a general indication of a power amplifier failure; it does not

necessarily mean that the fault is temperature related.

• ER 28, CPLR FLT, indicated an antenna coupler failure, including a

pressure-fault condition.

• ER 29, R/T FLT, indicate a receiver/exciter failure.

Note: An antenna coupler low pressure warning is not indicated by the RM-855.

2.C. Antenna Coupler Tune Fault

The antenna coupler must tune the antenna prior to being able to make a
transmission. Keying the microphone on a previously untuned channel initiates a
tune sequence that can last up to 30 seconds. (If the channel has been previously
tuned, the retune time typically takes less that 50 msec.) In the event the antenna
coupler cannot find a tune, a tune-fault will be indicated. The manner in which the
tune-fault is manifested to the pilot is controller and set-up dependent. In addition
to any visual indication, in a system that has the tune tone enabled, a tune fault will
be indicated by the steady tune-in-progress tone changing to an intermittent
beeping tone.

Visual indications:

• Using a PS 440 Controller, the frequency digits will flash to indicate a

tune-fault.

• With a MC-850, a "TUNE FAIL" message will appear.

• When using a RM-855 Controller, no visual indication is available. The beeping

tone is the only tune fault indication.

To clear the tune fault, either change the operating frequency or momentarily press
the PTT. It is advisable to try up to three tune attempts to tune the antenna to a
particular frequency. If repeated tune faults are observed, refer to the Tuning
Failure Section in “Table 1004 - Fault Isolation Checklist” .

2.D. Receiver Performance Check

1. If an operating frequency is properly displayed on the controller, listen to the

speaker or headphones. Ensure that the aircraft audio panel is properly set to
select the HF audio.

2. Select the USB Voice (UV) mode, SBH type squelch. (SBH is the default
squelch type. If using an RM855, only the SBH type is available.) Adjust the
squelch level to OFF. Adjust the volume control on the PS440 controller, and/or
the volume control on the audio panel. Depending on the frequency or channel
selected, a signal may be heard - or perhaps just atmospheric static.

NOTE: If the aircraft is located in a metal hangar, both signals and noise may
be weak. It is advisable to have the aircraft outside the hangar to
perform the receiver or transmitter tests.

Select a channel with a known usable signal. One possibility is one of the
time-and-frequency standard stations operating on frequencies of 2.5 MHz, 5
MHz, 10 MHz, 15 MHz, or 20 MHz.
These stations are located in Fort Collins, Colorado and Kekaha, Hawaii.
Consult the HF frequency propagation chart in “Table 2009 - Typical HF Signal
Propagation Distance” for an overview of the frequency to use for a particular
time of day and distance from the transmitter. These stations transmit in the AM
mode. However, they can be received by the KHF 1050 System in the USB
Voice (UV), LSB Voice (LV), AM or Reduce-Carrier (RC) modes.

If a signal can not be heard, check the connection to the antenna, the antenna
itself and ensure that all coaxial cables that interconnect the KHF 1050 System
are properly connected.

4. Adjust the squelch level as needed to LOW, MED or MAX to achieve the
minimum level required to suppress the receiver noise on a channel tune has
no voice signal present.

2.E. Transmitter Performance Check

1. Select the HF position on the audio panel microphone switch.

CAUTION: VERIFY THAT NO ONE IS STANDING ON THE GROUND NEAR

THE AIRCRAFT OR TOUCHING THE AIRCRAFT. WITH MANY
TYPES OF AIRCRAFT HF ANTENNAS, THE ENTIRE AIRFRAME
BECOMES PART OF THE ANTENNA. ANYONE STANDING ON
THE GROUND COULD RECEIVE AN ELECTRICAL SHOCK IF
TOUCHING THE AIRCRAFT, OR IF ENTERING OR EXITING
THE AIRCRAFT DURING A TRANSMISSION BY THE KHF 1050

SYSTEM. DO NOT OPERATE THE HF SYSTEM WHILE THE

AIRCRAFT IS BEING FUELED.

2. Select a channel on which the aircraft is authorized to transmit, with the

appropriate mode of operation, which is typically USB Voice (UV). Momentarily
press the PTT switch to start the antenna tuning process.

Assuming the KAC 1052 Antenna Coupler has not previously been on this
frequency, the antenna coupler will begin to tune to the antenna and the
controller display will begin to indicate that tuning is taking place. Refer to the
controller information for the details of how tuning is annunciated by the
particular controller being used. When using an RM-855 controller, only an
audio tune tone is available.

In the event that the operating frequency selected had previously been tuned
by the KAC 1052 Antenna Coupler, the antenna coupler will utilize stored tune
information and match to the antenna in less than 50 msec. However, changes
in antenna impedance can occasionally result in the KAC 1052 needing to
retune on a previously tuned frequency.

3. Upon completion of the tune cycle, the tune indication will disappear and the
display will return to a normal receive window. The receiver audio will likely be
different than it was prior to tuning the antenna and it may be necessary to
readjust the squelch if there is significant noise on the channel. The system is
now ready to transmit voice communications.

4. In order to ensure good audio quality of the transmitted signal, a

microphone-ground-loop test is recommended. To check for microphone
ground loops, select the AM mode on an unused frequency. Key the system
with no modulation, preferably covering the microphone element with your
hand.

Listen for any squeal or popping sound in the speaker or headphones. A squeal
or popping sound tends to indicate that a microphone ground loop exists.
Microphone ground loops will result in distorted audio. Such a ground loop is
usually the result of the microphone audio low line being tied to airframe ground
at multiple points.

5. Listen to the sidetone in the headphones or speaker while transmitting, both in

USB Voice (UV) and in AM. A raspy sound may indicate that RF interference is
feeding back into the HF or audio system.

6. While transmitting a voice test message in USB Voice (UV), observe other
electrical equipment in the aircraft and note any interference observed that
correlates to the HF transmission. It is recommended that this test be repeated
on an authorized frequency in each aviation band listed in “Table 2009 - Typical
HF Signal Propagation Distance” .

7. Voice communications should be established with a ground station or another

aircraft. See Paragraph “7.B.(4) Post-Installation Test” .

3. Fault Isolation Checklist

FAULT ACTION

Turn-On or Pilot-Activated 1. Ensure that the coaxial connections at the KPA 1052
Self-Test Fault: are correct. J10526 (Transmitter Input) should connect
to the KRX 1053 Receiver Exciter. J10527 on the KPA
1052 (Transmitter Output) on the KPA 1052 should
connect to the KAC 1052 Antenna Coupler.
2. Check the connections to each unit having an
associated error condition.
3. Verify that 28 VDC power is being applied to each unit
and that the voltage is steady.
4. Ensure the integrity of each coaxial cable in the
system and verify that each is connected to the proper
connectors.
Tuning Fault: 1. Press the PTT switch once to clear the tune fault, then
press the PTT switch again to start another tune cycle.
2. Repeat Step 1 for up to a total of 3 tune cycles.
3. If unit fails to tune the antenna after 3 attempts, select
a different frequency and try to retune the antenna at
the new frequency.
4. Turn the KHF 1050 system off and check the coaxial
cable connections between the KAC 1052 and the
antenna feedpoint.
5. Ensure that there is no evidence of arcing in the
connectors, antenna feed-through insulator or at the
antenna.
6. Check the antenna. If it is a grounded antenna, verify
that the DC resistance to ground is very low. If it is an
open wire antenna, verify that the resistance to ground
is very high. Refer to the bonding information in
Paragraph “6.A. Electrical Bonding Connections” .

4. Bench Test Harness Considerations

The following kits and components are recommended for assembling a Bench-Test
Harness for the KHF 1050 System. Commonly available connectors, such as BNC jacks,
microphone jacks and banana or pin jacks can be purchased from local electronic
component suppliers. Nine-pin null-modem cables may be purchased from computer
supply sources. Also see “Figure 1001 - KHF 1050 System Bench Test Harness” .

1 155-02794-0001 Computer Cable (9-Pin D to Four-conductor Plug) (Note 2)
NOTE 1: For use with a PS440 Controller. For other types of controllers, substitute
appropriate connectors.

NOTE 2: To operate with the KHF 1050 Maintenance Program, connections must be
made between a personal computer and the KAC 1052 or KRX 1053. For
interfacing a personal computer to the KRX 1053, Honeywell recommends that
a 033-00230-0000 connector be installed in the bench test harness, and that a
155-02794-0001 cable assembly be used between the KRX 1053 and the PC.
See “Figure 1002 - PC Data Cable Connections” . Alternately, a 9-pin male
D-connector can be installed in the harness to permit connection to KRX 1053's
RS-232 Maintenance lines. This alternate approach allows the use of a
common null-modem cable (9-pin female to 9-pin female) to be used between
the PC and either the KAC 1052 or the KRX 1053. However, with this
alternate approach, a separate means of grounding pin 78 on the KRX 1053
connector, J10531, must be provided. Pin 78 must grounded to operate the
KRX 1053 with the Maintenance Program, then ungrounded for normal radio
operation. This ground is automatically provided if using the 033-00230-0000
connector and 155-02794-0001 cable assembly.

1.A. Instructions for Continued Airworthiness

The instructions for continued airworthiness given in the TC or STC approvals for
this product supplements or supersedes the instructions for continued
airworthiness in this manual.

Most Honeywell products are designed and manufactured to allow “on condition
maintenance”. On condition maintenance is described as follows; There are no
periodic service requirements necessary to maintain continued airworthiness. No
maintenance is required until the equipment does not properly perform the
intended function. When service is required, a complete performance test should
be accomplished following any repair action. Consult the appropriate unit
Maintenance/Overhaul Manual for complete performance test information.

The only exception to the “on condition maintenance” statement for the KHF 1050
System is the KAC 1052 pressurization check described in Paragraph “10.A.(2)
KAC 1052 Pressurization” .

5.B. Location of Equipment

5.B.(1) KAC 1052 Antenna Coupler Mounting Location

Refer to “Figure 2023 - KAC 1052 Antenna Coupler Single Horizontal Outline
and Mounting” , “Figure 2024 - KAC 1052 Antenna Coupler Single Vertical
Outline and Mounting” , “Figure 2025 - KAC 1052 Antenna Coupler Dual
Vertical Outline and Mounting” and “Figure 2026 - KAC 1052 Antenna Coupler
Helicopter Outline and Mounting” for mounting dimensions.

The location of the KAC 1052 Antenna Coupler is critical. It must be located
very close to the feedpoint of the antenna or the antenna feed-through
insulator. In order to maximize the efficiency of the HF system, it is desirable to
keep the length of the feedline less than 12 inches, if possible. The feedline
should not exceed 24 inches, including the connector length. Lengths in excess
of 24 inches can create significant operational difficulties.

NOTE: Due to the high level of RF voltage the KHF 1050 system is capable of
generating, only a specially fabricated Honeywell feedline may be
used. Refer to Paragraph “” for appropriate part numbers.

The KAC 1052 must be mounted in a location that will allow it to be well bonded
to the airframe. See Paragraph “6.A. Electrical Bonding Connections” for
bonding considerations.

For best reliability, the KAC 1052 should be mounted such that it is not
subjected to excessive vibration or heat.

The KAC 1052 can be mounted at any angle. Either a vertical mounting tray or
a horizontal mounting tray can be used to attach the KAC 1052 to any flat
surface in a fixed wing application. In helicopter applications only the helicopter
mounting tray, which is a horizontal configuration, may be used.

5.B.(2) KPA 1052 Power Amplifier Mounting Location

Refer to “Figure 2027 - KPA 1052 Power Amplifier Outline and Mounting” for
mounting dimensions.

The location of the KPA 1052 is generally not critical. It is recommended that it
be mounted near the KAC 1052, to minimize loss in the coaxial cable
interconnecting the KPA 1052 and the KAC 1052.

The cable length between the KPA 1052 and the KAC 1052 should not exceed
50 feet.

Page 2003
Revision 6 23-10-09 Nov/2007
N
KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

For best reliability, the KPA 1052 should be mounted such that it is not
subjected to excessive vibration or heat.

The KPA 1052 can be mounted to either a vertical or horizontal surface, or at

an angle.

5.B.(3) KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter Mounting Location

Refer to “Figure 2028 - KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter Outline and Mounting” for
mounting dimensions.

Mount the KRX 1053 so that the connection between the KRX 1053 and the
KAC 1052 does not exceed 50 feet. The KRX 1053 is typically mounted
vertically on a horizontal surface.

5.B.(4) CDU Mounting Location

Refer to “Figure 2020 - PS440 Control Display Unit Outline and Mounting” ,
“Figure 2021 - MC-850 Multifunction Control and Display Unit Outline and
Mounting” , “Figure 2021 - MC-850 Multifunction Control and Display Unit
Outline and Mounting” , “Figure 2021 - MC-850 Multifunction Control and
Display Unit Outline and Mounting” and “Figure 2022 - RM-855 Radio
Management Unit Outline and Mounting” for mounting dimensions.

Mounting of the CDU is not critical. Whatever controller is used, it should be

mounted so that physically it is within comfortable reach and sight of the
intended user .

5.B.(5) Antenna Location

To minimize RF exposure of personnel, install the antenna generally away from

areas where people are located. In situations where a person would be directly
exposed to the antenna, such as in a composite aircraft, a minimum separation
of 6.9 feet (2.1 meters) is generally required between any part of the antenna
and any location where a person may be permanently seated in the aircraft. The
necessary separation distance can be reduced to a minimum of 3.3 feet (1
meter) in applications where only SSB voice modulation is utilized, due to the
low duty factor of that mode. Lesser separation is acceptable in an aircraft
where a metal skin shields the occupants from the antenna.
The antenna is a primary factor for maximum performance of the KHF 1050 HF
system. While numerous options are available in the choice of antenna
configurations, some configurations are better suited for a particular installation
than others.

Page 2004
Revision 6 23-10-09 Nov/2007

KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

Commonly used aircraft HF antennas will generally fall into one of four
categories:

• "V" (Referring to the V shape formed by the antenna wire) and Long wire
antenna.
• Short grounded wire antenna.
• Shunt antenna.
Characteristics of these commonly used antennas and the compromise
associated with each type are described below, so the installer can select the
antenna that is best suited to a particular aircraft and type of operation. All
antennas should be installed in a manner that does not jeopardize the safe
operation of the aircraft.

5.B.(5)(a) "V" and Long Wire Antenna Mounting Location

Because of their generally good performance, consideration should be

given to the use of "V" and long wire antennas on all installations, except
very high speed fixed wing aircraft and helicopters. Wire antennas are not
recommended for use on helicopters, due to safety concerns in the event of
an antenna wire breakage.

"V" and long wire antenna performance will be enhanced by striving to meet
the following criteria:

• Maximize the length of wire (up to approximately 60 feet or 18 m.). The

total length of the antenna should be at least 25 feet (7.6 m).
• Maximize the separation between the antenna wire and the aircraft
structure. This is usually achieved by attaching the tensioner as high as
possible on vertical stabilizers.

Page 2005

KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

5.B.(5)(b) Wing Tip “V” Antenna Mounting Location

(refer to “Figure 2001 - Typical Wing Tip “V” Antenna” )

The wing type “V” is one of the most effective HF antennas which can be
utilized on an aircraft. It is well suited for slow and moderate speed aircraft
which require optimum HF communication and performance. It will exhibit a
rather omnidirectional radiation pattern and provide good efficiency at all
frequencies.

It has the disadvantages of having high drag, and on low wing aircraft is
prone to being walked into. The length of a wing tip “V” antenna is usually
30 to 45 feet (9.2 to 13.7 m).

Figure 2001 - Typical Wing Tip “V” Antenna

Page 2006
Revision 6 23-10-09 Nov/2007
N
KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

5.B.(5)(c) Inverted “V” Antenna Mounting Location

(refer to “Figure 2002 - Typical Inverted “V” Antenna” )

The inverted “V” antenna is recommended when a wing “V” is not practical
and the antenna coupler is to be mounted in the aft position of the aircraft.
The inverted “V” antenna will produce maximum signal strength off the side
of the aircraft and will produce a moderate amount of drag.

The vertical fin anchor should be located as high as possible on the vertical
stabilizer. The feedthru insulator should be located approximately 3 feet (0.9
m) forward of the base of the vertical stabilizers and near the centerline of
the top of the aircraft.

Figure 2002 - Typical Inverted “V” Antenna

Page 2007
Revision 6 23-10-09 Nov/2007
N
KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

5.B.(5)(d) Long Wire Antenna Mounting Location

(refer to “Figure 2003 - Typical Long Wire Antenna” )

The long wire antenna is used when the KAC 1052 Antenna Coupler is
located in the forward part of the aircraft. It will provide maximum signal
radiation off the sides of the aircraft. Significant nulls in signal strength may
be noted off the nose and tail of the aircraft.

Figure 2003 - Typical Long Wire Antenna

5.B.(5)(e) Short Grounded Wire Antenna Mounting Location

Short grounded wire antennas may be utilized on higher speed and/or high
altitude aircraft. These short wire antennas have a minimum drag and do not
develop as high of RF voltages as do the longer wire antennas, making
them suitable for operations up to 55,000 feet. However the efficiency of the
short antenna will be lower, especially at the low frequencies.

Typical short wire antenna lengths are approximately 8 feet (2.4 m) to 18

feet (5.5 m). The large antenna currents require the use of a wire with low
RF resistance (i.e., large diameter and highly conductive surface) to reduce
the power losses in the wire. The feedline and the antenna grounding must
have very low RF resistance. Only a tensioner with an attached ground wire
should be used to terminate the antenna.

Page 2008

N
KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

5.B.(5)(f) Short Wire to Vertical Stabilizer Antenna Mounting Location

(refer to “Figure 2004 - Typical Short Wire to Vertical Stabilizer Antenna” )

The most common form of short grounded wire antennas have the feedthru
insulator mounted on the upper aft part of the fuselage, as far forward of the
vertical stabilizer as is practical. The antenna wire runs from this feedthru to
the tip of the vertical stabilizer. It is important to ground this wire as high as
possible on the vertical stabilizer to maximize the efficiency and to reduce
the nulls in the pattern. This antenna will generally exhibit maximum
radiation off the side of the aircraft.

Figure 2004 - Typical Short Wire to Vertical Stabilizer Antenna

5.B.(5)(g) Short Wire to Wing or Horizontal Stabilizer Antenna Mounting Location

(refer to “Figure 2005 - Typical Short Wire to Wing Antenna” and “Figure
2006 - Typical Short Wire to Horizontal Stabilizer Antenna” )

In installations where the short wire to the vertical stabilizer may not be
practical, consideration may be given to a short grounded wire to the wing
or horizontal stabilizer. While such antennas produce only minimum drag,
they will tend to be directional off the side of the aircraft.

These antennas are also prone to being walked into. Maximum separation
between the wire and the aircraft structure is important, as is maximizing the
length of the wire.

5.B.(5)(h) Shunt Antenna Mounting Location

Two types of shunt antennas are commonly used. The most preferable type,
on a fixed wing aircraft, is designed by the airframe manufacturer as a part
of the airframe structure. It is most often an electrically isolated section of
the leading edge of the vertical stabilizer, grounded at the top. The other
type of shunt antenna is often referred to as a "tranline" or "towel bar", which
is simply a rod or tube run external to a section of the airframe and
grounded.

Shunt antennas are suitable for high altitude aircraft because they do not
develop extremely high voltage but do develop extremely high RF current
(up to 50 amps).

5.B.(5)(i) Leading Edge of Vertical Stabilizer Antenna Mounting Location

(refer to “Figure 2007 - Typical Shunt Leading Edge Antenna” )

A shunt antenna that is built into the leading edge of the vertical stabilizers
has become popular on many jet aircraft. Such an antenna provides no
drag, exhibits a rather omnidirectional radiation pattern and if well bonded
can provide moderate to good efficiencies. Good bonding of the antenna
and the KAC 1052 Antenna Coupler is essential.

A feedline exhibiting extremely low RF resistance must be used between

the KAC 1052 Antenna Coupler and the antenna.

Figure 2007 - Typical Shunt Leading Edge Antenna

5.B.(5)(j) Shorted Tranline or Towel Bar Antenna Mounting Location

(refer to “Figure 2008 - Typical Shorted Tranline or Towel Bar Antenna” )

Grounded transline (transmission line), often referred to as “towel bar”

antennas because their shape resembles a towel bar, are best suited for
helicopter applications. They can be attached parallel to the tailboom and
fed on the forward end. These antennas provide minimum drag but suffer
from poor efficiencies, especially at low frequencies.
Loss with this type of antenna can be minimized by observing the following
criteria:

• Space the antenna as far off the airframe as possible. 18 inches (0.46
m) is preferred, with spacing of 9 inches (23 cm) or more being required.
• The antenna diameter should be a minimum of 1 inch (2.54 cm) and
constructed out of a highly conductive material. Copper or aluminum is
generally used, with silver plating being recommended. Stainless steel
should be avoided due to its high resistance. This antenna should be a
continuous piece (non-spliced) and should be well bonded at both ends.
• A minimum antenna length of 12 feet (3.7 m) should be used. The
feedline coax length should be limited to 24 inches (60 cm).
• It is preferable to attach the antenna to a protruding surface, such as a
tail boom or a stabilizer element. Attaching to a wide section of the
fuselage will generally give poor performance.

5.C. Interwiring and Cable Fabrication

5.C.(1) Fabrication and Routing

“Figure 2032 - KHF 1050 HF System Interconnect” provides a KHF 1050 HF

Communication System interconnect summary.

Cabling must be fabricated according to the interwiring diagrams. The length of

the wires to parallel pins should be approximately the same length, for best
current distribution.

Wires for optional functions are shown on the interwiring diagrams. The actual
use of these wires will depend upon the installation, customer requirements and
capability of the units installed.

When the cables are installed in the aircraft, they must be supported firmly
enough to prevent movement and should be carefully protected against
chafing. Additional protection should also be provided in all locations where the
cables may be subject to abuse.

In wire bundles, the cabling should not be tied tightly together as this tends to
increase the possibility of noise pickup and similar interference. When routing
cables through the airframe, the cables should cross high-level lines at a right
angle.

The installer must be knowledgeable of any system variation peculiar to the

installation such as strapping requirements described in Paragraph “5.D.
Strapping Options” . Furthermore, the installer should use ARINC
Characteristic 735 as a guide and reference throughout the fabrication and
installation of the cabling in the aircraft.

5.C.(2) Interface Capability and Requirements

All RF coaxes must be double shielded.

Special care should be taken in the routing of the microphone input line. This
line is susceptible to noise. It should not be routed in the same harness
containing high current lines.

Page 2013
Revision 6 23-10-09 Nov/2007
N
KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

5.C.(3) Primary Power and Circuit Breaker Requirements

All units in the KHF 1050 system should be protected by circuit breakers in the
positive primary power lines. The KPA 1052 should use an individually
dedicated 30 amp slow-acting circuit breaker. The KAC 1052 and KRX 1053
can share a common 5 amp circuit breaker, or be individually protected by a 5
amp circuit breaker for the KAC 1052 and a 2 amp circuit for the KRX 1053. In
a dual installation, the KAC 1052 and KRX 1053 must share a circuit breaker.
If a PS440 controller is used in the system, it can share a circuit breaker with
the KRX 1053. An MC-850 or an RM-855 must not share a circuit breaker with
any HF system component.

Shielding of the 28V primary power lines is optional. In applications where these
power lines are routed close to the HF antenna or other RF sources, shielding
of those lines will reduce the potential for RF energy getting fed back into the
aircraft power bus.

5.C.(4) High-Voltage Concerns

The RF voltage at the antenna can be several thousand volts or more,

depending on the operating frequency and the impedance of the antenna. The
feedline components that connect to the center pin of P10528 on the KAC 1052,
as well as the antenna itself, can exhibit dangerous levels of RF voltage. Any
antenna components or feed-line components that are exposed have the
potential to develop corona at high altitudes or to arc to nearby objects. Care
should be taken to ensure proper safety measures are observed. These
measures include:

• No person should be able to touch a high voltage point or come within one
foot (0.3m) of a high voltage point when the KHF 1050 is transmitting. Also
observe the RF Exposure requirements described in Paragraph “5.B.(5)
Antenna Location” .
• Exposed conductors should be free of sharp corners or edges. Rounded
surfaces are less likely to develop corona or arcing.
• A minimum of 1.5 inches (38 mm) of separation should be allowed between
the high-voltage conductor and other conductive or partially conductive
objects or surfaces. Two inches (51 mm) or more of separation may be
required in some circumstances.
• Care should be taken to ensure that corona or arcing does not occur in any
area where it could present a fire or explosion hazard.
• In areas where corona or arcing can not be tolerated, a fully shielded coaxial
feedline and feedthrough must be utilized.
• The HN connectors on the antenna feed cable should be well tightened and
the mating surfaces kept clean and dry. Cables or connectors that show
evidence of contamination or arcing damage should be replaced.

5.C.(5) Antenna Cable Considerations

• Cable Type

The cable connecting the KAC 1052 antenna output (J10528) to the
antenna or antenna feed-through must be a specially fabricated feedline
supplied by Honeywell. Due to the high level of RF voltage the KHF 1050
system is capable of generating, substitute cables must not be used. Refer
to Paragraph “” for appropriate part numbers for the Honeywell supplied
HN-to-HN feedline assemblies.

• Special Helicopter Considerations

When a feedline with a right angle connector is used in a helicopter

application, it is recommended that the cable be secured with a clamp to
prevent rotation about the center pin of the connector. The clamp should be
attached around the cable within 3 inches (7.6 cm) of the body of the
connector and attached to a support point on the helicopter.

Similarly, in a dual-HF helicopter installation employing a Y-cable assembly

(PN 155-00298-XXXX or 155-0302X-XXXX), extra support may be needed
to support the cable near the triangle assembly. On any leg of the cable that
is greater than 9 inches in length, it is recommended that a clamp be placed
atound the cable at a point located within 2 inches (5 cm) of the triangle. This
clamp must attach to a support point on the helicopter.

5.C.(6) Dual Installation Feedline Considerations

In a dual installation where two KHF 1050 Systems share a common antenna,
the following information is applicable:

• The antenna connectors (J10528) of the KAC 1052 antenna couplers are
simultaneously connected to the antenna by the use of a specially
fabricated Y-cable assembly. The 155-0302X-XXXX series of Y-cables
provide a wide range of length and connector configuration options. See
“Figure 8 - High Voltage Dual Coupler Cables” for available configurations.
Special cables that do not fall into the numbering system of the
155-0302X-XXXX series may be available in the 155-02989-XXXX series of
Y-cables.
• Minimize the overall length of the feedline, with the longest
coupler-to-antenna path not to exceed 24 inches.
• The best performance will typically be realized if the two legs of the Y-cable
that attach to the antenna couplers are as short as is practical. The common

Page 2015
Revision 6 23-10-09 Nov/2007
N
KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

leg that goes to the antenna can be extended to obtain the required length,
up to a total of 24 inches for the longest coupler-to-antenna path.
• The minimum bend radius for each leg of the cable assembly is 2 inches
(51mm).
• If one antenna coupler is temporarily removed from the aircraft, the HF
system must not be operated with the Y-cable HN connector left open. The
preferred approach is to temporarily replace the Y-cable with P/N
155-02988-XXXX single-system cable of the appropriate style and length.
(See “Figure 6 - High Voltage Single Coupler Cable Assemblies” ).
Alternatively an HN cap, P/N 088-03514-0001, can be temporarily placed
over the unused connector. This HN cap is intended for temporary use only.

Notes:

1. The HN cap is for temporary use only in applications that develop

less than 3000 V peak and at altitudes not greater than 45000ft.
(Leading-edge antennas and grounded wire antennas less than 12
feet long typically develop less than 3000 V peak.)

2. Fully insert the HN cap into the unused plug of the Y-cable.

3. Some RF radiation will be experienced through the HN cap.

• For provisional dual installations, the aircraft should be equipped with a

single 155-02988-XXXX cable. When the second KHF 1050 system is
installed at a later date, a Y-cable should be installed at that time. It is
recommended that the single cable be kept available in the aircraft for use
if one HF system is pulled out for service.

5.C.(7) Overbraid

A conductive overbraid is recommended over the sections of the wiring harness

that are located in areas that are not inside a metal fuselage. The primary
purpose of this overbraid is to protect the wiring harness from RF radiation off
the HF antenna. The overbraid is to be of a type designed for RFI/EMI
protection and may be made of either tinned copper or aluminum. Overbraid
that is applied in a spiral wrap configuration is not recommended.

Typically, this overbraid should be grounded at only the KAC 1052 end. If it is
necessary to overbraid the harness between the Receiver/Exciter and the
Controller, the overbraid should be grounded only at the KRX 1053 end.

5.C.(8) Connectors

Mating connectors for the KHF 1050 HF system components are identified on
the appropriate outline drawing. Associated connector installation kits are
specified in the “DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION” section of this manual.
Crimping, insertion, extraction tools are identified in Paragraph “5.C.(11)
Connector Pin Tools” .

5.C.(9) Feedline Adapters

In applications in which the aircraft’s antenna is not configured with an HN

receptacle, adapters can be used to convert the HN cables to a post or screw
terminal. A feedline strap can then be connected between the screw or post
terminal and the feedpoint of the antenna. In such applications, the feedline
strap becomes part of the antenna radiating elements. Care must be taken to
observe the high-voltage concerns discussed in paragraph 5.C.(4) of the
Installation and Maintenance section of this manual.

Three feedline adapter options are available to interface the KAC 1052 to an
antenna via a strap or similar antenna feed arrangement as detailed in Table
2001.

Part Number Nomenclature Typical Application

050-03722-0000 HN Adapter Kit, Conversion between an HN coaxial

Bracket assembly and a feed strap, where the
adapter is surface mounted to an aircraft
panel or support.

050-03722-0001 HN Adapter Kit, Conversion between an HN coaxial

Feedthrough assembly and a feed strap, where the
adapter is used to feed through a metal
panel or the skin of the aircraft.

076-01136-0004 HN Connector When the feed strap extends all the way
Adapter to P10528 on the antenna coupler, the
feed strap can be essentially connected
directly to the antenna coupler. A coaxial
feedline is not used in this application.

The 050-03722-0000 and 050-03722-0001 kits include all of the necessary

hardware to connect a feedline strap to the threaded 10-32 post on the feedline
adapter’s connector. Strap thickness up to 0.12 inches (3 mm) can be used.
The mounting plate for these adapters should be well bonded to the airframe
using the techniques described in paragraph 6.A. of the Installation and
Maintenance section of this manual. Coaxial cable assemblies (PN

155-02988-XXXX, 155-02989-XXXX or 155-0302X-XXXX) are used to connect

between P10528 on the KAC 1052 and the HN connector on the feedline
adapter. See ”Figure 2029 - Feedline Adapter Bracket” and ”Figure 2030 -
Feedline Adapter - Feedthrough”.

Connector adapter 076-01136-0004 can be used if the feedline strap extends

all the way to the KAC 1052. It is recommended that the strap be attached to
the 10-32 threaded portion of the adapter with a stainless steel screw of the
appropriate length and two silver plated washers, PN 076-03210-0002 (not
included) or equivalent. See ”Figure 2031 - Connector Adapter Installation”.
This adapter is recommended only for applications that develop less than
3000V peak and operate at altitudes not greater than 45,000 feet.
(Leading-edge antennas and grounded wire antennas less than 12 feet long
typically develop less than 3000V peak.)

The feedline strap should be made of a solid material. Silver plating the strap to
minimize losses is preferred. A 1 inch (25.4 mm) wide, 0.01 inch (0.25 mm)
thick, silver plated beryllium copper strap is available from Honeywell (PN
047-06261-0036) in a 36 inch (0.91 m) length that can be trimmed to fit the
installation. It is recommended that feedline straps be appropriately supported
to prevent excessive flexing and to prevent excessive forces from being applied
to the feedline adapter.

5.D. Strapping Options

5.D.(1) KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter Strapping Options

NOTE: Asserted = GND, Not Asserted = OPEN

Refer to “Figure 2032 - KHF 1050 HF System Interconnect” for KRX 1053
strapping options.

5.D.(1)(a) Power ON/OFF Control - (J10531-23) PWR CONT

An external controller turns on the KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter by asserting

(grounding) the POWER ON/OFF CONTROL discrete input. In an
installation in which LRU power is to be controlled by a radio master switch
or relay, this input may be permanently strapped to ground. Also see
Paragraph “4.A.(1) System Power UP” .

This input is continuously read.

5.D.(1)(b) Controller Select - (J10531-57) CONT SEL

When set up to operate in the continuous TUNING MODE, the

CONTROLLER SELECT discrete determines which HF controller input is
active.

The KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter accepts tuning and control data from the
HF CONTROLLER INPUT #1 when the CONTROLLER SELECT and
TUNING MODE discrete inputs are not asserted.

The KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter accepts tuning and control data from the
HF CONTROLLER INPUT #2 when the CONTROLLER SELECT discrete
input is asserted and the TUNING MODE discrete input is not asserted.

This input is continuously read.

5.D.(1)(c) Burst/Continuous Tuning Mode - (J10531-15) TUNE MODE

When the BURST/CONTINUOUS TUNING MODE discrete input is not

asserted, the KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter operates with continuous ARINC
429 tuning and mode control data and the CONTROLLER SELECT discrete
input determines the active controller input.

NOTE: Continuous mode not available on 064-01073-0101/5101 KRX

1053 units.

Page 2034
Revision 6 23-10-09 Nov/2007
N
KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

When the BURST/CONTINUOUS TUNING MODE discrete input is

asserted, the KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter operates by receiving bursts of
ARINC 429 tuning data.

In a system consisting of two external HF controllers, with one controller

connected to HF CONTROLLER INPUT #1 data bus and the other
connected to HF CONTROLLER INPUT #2 data bus, this tuning and control
mode allows the receiver/exciter to automatically accept tuning/control data
bursts from either controller.

In either the BURST or CONTINUOUS mode, the receiver/exciter sends

continuous data to the controller.

The KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter processor samples the state of this discrete
input only at initial power application. The state of this discrete is assumed
to not change during operation.

5.D.(1)(d) Left Side (J10531-98) L SIDE and Right Side (J10531-13)

When the LEFT SIDE discrete input is asserted (grounded) and the RIGHT
SIDE discrete input is not asserted, the KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter accepts
ARINC 429 data in which the SDI field is set to 10B, 00B, or 11B. (SDI field
00B identifies an “all call” message and SDI field 11B identifies a “tune both”
message.)

Additionally, the KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter sets the SDI field of all ARINC
429 transmitted messages to 01B (bit 9 = 1, bit 10 = 0). This condition
identifies the system as HF #1.

When the RIGHT SIDE discrete input is asserted (grounded) and the LEFT
SIDE discrete input is not asserted, the KRX 1050 Receiver/Exciter accepts
ARINC 429 data in which the SDI field is set to 01B, 00B, or 11B.
(SDI field 00B identifies an “all call” message and SDI field 11B identifies a
“tune both” message.)

Additionally, the KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter sets the SDI field of all ARINC
429 transmitted messages to 10B (bit 9 = 0, bit 10 = 1). This condition
identifies the system as HF #2.

When neither the LEFT SIDE discrete input nor the RIGHT SIDE discrete
input is asserted (grounded), or when both the LEFT SIDE and RIGHT SIDE
discrete inputs are asserted:

• The KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter does not accept ARINC 429 data.

Page 2035
Revision 6 23-10-09 Nov/2007
N
KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

• The KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter sets the SDI field of all ARINC 429
transmitted messages to 00B, and it sets bits 30 and 31 (status field) of
all messages except that with label 351 to 11B, indicating an invalid
condition shall set bits 30 and 31 (status field) of the label 351
Maintenance Status message to 00B, indicating a fault condition. It is
intended that at least one of these discrete inputs, but not both, be
asserted.

The KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter processor samples the state of these

discrete inputs only at initial power application. The state of these discretes
are assumed to not change during operation.

5.D.(1)(e) Narrow/Wide Freq Range - (J10531-100) NAR/W FREQ RNG

When the NARROW/WIDE FREQ RANGE discrete input is asserted

(grounded), the KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter restricts operations to the
frequency range from 2.0000 MHz through 22.9999 MHz, and clears bit 18
of the Receiver/Exciter Output Label 037, Word ID #1 (Control Status) word
to logic 0.

When the NARROW/WIDE FREQ RANGE discrete input is not asserted,

the KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter operates over the full frequency range from
2.0000 MHz through 29.9999 MHz.

If the NARROW/WIDE FREQ RANGE discrete input is asserted and the HF

controller commands a transmit or receive frequency above 22.9999 MHz,
the receiver/exciter will go to 22.999 MHz.

The KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter processor samples the state of this discrete
input only at initial power application. The state of this discrete is assumed
not to change during operation.

5.D.(1)(f) Stuck MIC Protection- (J10531-36) STUCK MIC PTCT

When the STUCK MIC PROTECTION discrete input is asserted

(grounded), the receiver/exciter stops transmitting after a transmission
duration equal to a constant set in non-volatile memory during
manufacturing test or service center test.

• This time duration can be set to a value between 30 seconds and 240
seconds. The default time is 120 seconds.
• The KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter processor samples the state of this
discrete input only at initial power application. The state of this discrete
is assumed to not change during operation.

5.E. Analog Inputs and Outputs

5.E.(1) Microphone Input

The microphone input will operate with voice signal levels typically from 0.20
VRMS to 2.5 VRMS. A DC bias current equivalent to that provided by a voltage
source of +15 VDC in series with 470 ohms is provided on pin 21. The
audio-frequency input impedance is 150 ohms (typical).

5.E.(2) Receiver Audio/Sidetone Audio Output from the Receiver/Exciter

(J10531-40 and 82)

The Receiver Audio/Sidetone is a balanced audio output capable of supplying

100 mW into a 600 ohm load. This signal is the combination of the receiver
audio output signal and the transmitter sidetone signal. Also included in this
audio is the antenna coupler tune tone, if activated. When operating in data
modes, this output is muted.

This output is factory adjusted to 7.75 VRMS +/-5% (100 mW) into 600 ohms,
at maximum volume. As shipped from the factory, the level of the sidetone is
the same as the level of the receiver audio.

The Receiver Audio/Sidetone output level can be adjusted three ways. It can
be adjusted via the volume control on the ARINC 429 controller, if the controller
is equipped with volume control capability, as is the PS440. It can also be
adjusted by use of a service adjustment located on the top of the Receiver
Exciter. Refer to Paragraph “10.B. Field Alignment” for the location of this
adjustment. Accessing this adjustment requires removing the dust cover.
Finally, the transmitter sidetone level can be adjusted with respect to the
receiver audio by use of the KHF 1050 Maintenance Program software (PN
222-30144-0000). Changing the sidetone level also changes the level of the
antenna coupler tune tone, if activated. Refer to Paragraph “10.C.(6)
Installation Setup” .

5.E.(3) SELCAL AUDIO Output from Receiver/Exciter

(J10531-19 & 61)

This SELCAL Audio Output provides an unsquelched AM-mode balanced

audio output compatible with an ARINC 714 SELCAL decoder. Regardless of
the operating mode selected by the pilot, this output is always an AM
demodulated signal. The signal level is factory adjusted to 1 mW (.775 Vrms)
into a 600 ohm load, and can be adjusted by a service adjustment located on
the top of the Receiver Exciter. See Paragraph “10.B. Field Alignment” for the
location of this adjustment. Accessing this adjustment requires removing the
dust cover.

5.E.(4) EXTERNAL MODEM AUDIO Output from Receiver/Exciter

(J10531-42 & 62)

The receiver/exciter provides an unsquelched, EXTERNAL MODEM AUDIO

Output that is a balanced output for use by an external modem. This output is
factory adjusted to provide 0.775 VRMS +/-5% (1 mW) into a 600 ohm load, and
is active when the receiver/exciter is receiving in any modulation mode. If
necessary, this output can be adjusted by a service adjustment located on the
top of the Receiver Exciter. See “10.B. Field Alignment” for the location of this
adjustment. Accessing this adjustment requires removing the dust cover

5.E.(5) External Modem Audio Input High/Low- (J10531-42/62)

EXT MODEM AUD INPUP H/L

The audio signal level is typically 0.775 VRMS across 600 ohms.

The KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter presents a balanced, floating 600 ohm load to
this signal.

This input does not present direct-current bias to the signal source.

There is no audio clipping or compression associated with this input at normal

operating levels.

This input is factory adjusted so that 1 KHz modem input signal of 0.775 VRMS
yields nominal Data USB output power from the KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter.

5.F. Discrete Inputs and Outputs

5.F.(1) Key Event - (J10531-13) KEY EVENT

The KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter asserts (grounds) the KEY EVENT discrete
output when the transmitter is activated by any activation method.

This output may be used by external equipment, such as a flight recorder, to

sense when the HF system is transmitting. Maximum sink current is 100 mA.

5.F.(2) Maintenance Test- (J10531-78) MAINT TEST

When the MAINTENANCE TEST discrete input is asserted (grounded), the

KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter RS-232 Maintenance port accepts test commands
from the KHF 1050 Maintenance Program software (P/N 222-30144-0000).

This input is continuously read.

Page 2038
Revision 6 23-10-09 Nov/2007
N
KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

5.F.(3) External Data Keyline HI (J10531-38) EXT DATA KEYLINE H

When the external resistance between the EXTERNAL DATA KEYLINE HI and
LO pins is ten ohms or less, the KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter activates the
transmitter and uses the audio at the EXTERNAL MODEM AUDIO INPUT as
the modulation source.

The EXTERNAL DATA KEYLINE LO pin may be connected externally to

airframe ground in some installations.
The KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter interprets a resistance of 10 ohms or less
between the EXTERNAL DATA KEYLINE HI and LO pins as a command to
transmit, whether the LO pin is grounded or left floating.

This input is continuously read.

5.F.(4) Voice Push-To-Talk HI- (J10531-16) VO PTT H

When the external resistance between the VOICE PUSH-TO-TALK HI and LO

pins is ten ohms or less, the KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter activates the
transmitter and uses the audio at the MIC AUDIO INPUT as the modulation
source.

The KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter interprets a resistance of 10 ohms or less

between the VOICE PUSH-TO-TALK HI and LO pins as a command to
transmit, whether the LO pin is grounded or left floating.

This input is continuously read.

NOTE: The VOICE PUSH-TO-TALK LO pin may be connected externally to

airframe ground in some installations.

5.F.(5) Other Side PTT- (J10531-37) OTHER SIDE PTT

When asserted (grounded), the OTHER SIDE PTT input prevents the system
from transmitting.

This input is continuously read.

In a dual system installation, when this input is connected to the KEY EVENT
output of the KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter in the opposite system, it prevents this
system from transmitting whenever the KEY EVENT of the other system is
asserted.

When asserted (grounded), bit 18 of message (Output label 037), word ID #1

“Other side keyed” is set to 0.

Page 2039
Revision 6 23-10-09 Nov/2007
N
KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

The OTHER SIDE PTT and the KEY EVENT discrete inputs/outputs function as
an “interlock” to ensure that both systems can not transmit at the same time.
Such an interlock function is required when two HF systems share a common
antenna on an aircraft.

Example: If the co-pilot is transmitting (or tuning the antenna) on the right-side
HF system, the pilot will not be able to key the left-side system until the
right-side system returns to the receive mode. Once the right-side system has
returned to receive mode, the pilot will be able to immediately transmit (or tune
the antenna) on the left-side system.

5.F.(6) Other Side On

(J10531-49)

This input line is part of the dual system interface and is continuously read.
When pulled to +12 Volts by the CR COM line of the opposite system, the first
system is set to operate as part of a dual system. The result is that the receiving
action always utilizes the bridging amplifier in the KAC 1052.

When this input line is allowed to float to ground, the system performs as a
single system, typically bypassing the bridging amplifier and receiving through
the tuned matching network. This input is not active on receiver/exciters with
P/Ns 064-01073-0101/5101.

6. Equipment Installation

6.A. Electrical Bonding Connections

6.A.(1) Antenna Coupler Electrical Bonding Connections

The importance of properly bonding the KAC 1052 Antenna Coupler to the
airframe can not be over emphasized.

Good RF bonding of the KAC 1052 Antenna Coupler to aircraft metal structure
is essential in achieving maximum efficiency from the system and minimizing
interference with other systems in the aircraft.

The primary electrical bonding path is through a ground strap from a ground
post on the KAC 1052 to a point on the airframe near the antenna feed point.
More than one ground strap can be used. Additional grounding is achieved via
the KAC 1052 mounting tray and mounting shelf. The shield of the coax also
contributes to the overall bond of the KAC 1052 to the airframe.

Page 2040
Revision 6 23-10-09 Nov/2007
N
KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

6.A.(2) Bonding Strap Considerations

Make bonding straps as short as practical and installed in such a manner that
the resistance of each connection does not exceed 3 milliohms. The straps
must not interfere with moveable aircraft elements, such as surface controls,
nor should the movements of these elements result in damage to the bonding
straps.

The bonding strap should be made of a solid conductive material rather than
braid. Strap thickness should be 0.010 inches or greater. A one inch wide silver
plated copper strap, available from Honeywell, is recommended. P/N
047-06261-0036 is a 36 inch length of the strap. This strap can be cut to length
and punched as necessary.

6.A.(3) Bonding Connection and Corrosion Prevention Techniques

Because the mounting surfaces are an important part of the ground system,
bonding between these surfaces requires special attention.

NOTE: All nonconductive finishes such as primer, paint, anodizing films, or

zinc chromate, must be totally removed from the entire mating surface
before assembly. Techniques such as spot-facing or cleaning only
small area of the mating surfaces do not provide adequate RF bonding.

Ground strap connections must be totally free of any non-conductive finishes.

Corrosion resistance for aluminum mating surfaces should be achieved by

cleaning the aluminum surfaces with Alumiprep #33 (P/N 016-01127-0000),
and then applying Alodine #1001 (P/N 016-01128-0000). Alodine #1001 (as
well as Alodine #600) provides good electrical conductivity, other Alodine
coatings should be avoided.

Only after the shelves are assembled and mounted, and ground straps
installed, may nonconductive or poorly conductive protective finishes, such as
zinc chromate be applied. Periodic inspection should be made of all bonds to
ensure that corrosion is not occurring. Any observed corrosion should be
cleaned off.

6.B. KAC 1052 Antenna Coupler Installation

6.B.(2) Power Requirements

The KAC 1052 Antenna Coupler will operate from a 28 Vdc power supply. The
unit must be connected to the aircraft power supply with a circuit breaker with
not less than 5 Amp rating.

6.B.(3) Grounding Requirements

NOTE: The importance of properly bonding the KAC 1052 Antenna coupler to
the airframe can not be over emphasized.

NOTE: Except for the ground provided by the feedline coax shield, bonding
should not be done with braided wire but with solid conductive straps,
typically one inch wide.

Good RF bonding of the KAC 1052 Antenna Coupler to aircraft metal structure
is basic in achieving maximum efficiency from the system and eliminating any
possible interference to other systems in the aircraft. See Paragraph “6.A.
Electrical Bonding Connections” for bonding considerations.

6.B.(4) Procedure

• After a location has been selected, mark the location of the four mounting
screws.

Note: Helicopter applications will require the marking of eight mounting

screw locations.

• Drill four (or eight) #8 holes.

• Mount the tray to the mounting surface with four (or eight) # 8-32 fasteners
and lock nuts.
• With the mounting tray secured, locate a point on the airframe structure near

6.E.(2) PS440 Lighting Adjustments

The PS-440 HF control panel is capable of dimming the display, panel, and
annunciator lighting from either a 5 VAC, 5 VDC or 28 VDC lighting bus source.
The dimming bus pins only sense the voltage being applied. Minimal current is
drawn from the dimming bus inputs. All lighting current is drawn from the 28
VDC input power pins of the panel.

The dimming curve for the panel lighting follows a standard curve from
extinguished lighting at 0 V to full bright at the maximum voltage on the
appropriate dimming bus. The dimming curve for the display backlighting and
annunciator lighting follow a similar curve. However, when the dimming bus
voltage is less than approximately 20% of the maximum voltage (based on
dimming bus input used: 5 V or 28 V), the display and annunciator lighting will
trip to a full bright condition (maximum illumination). This is referred to as the
FBAZ (Full Bright at Zero) condition.

NOTE: Later software releases allow a maximum brightness adjustment. The

“full bright'' condition occurs during daylight hours when no dimming
bus voltage is present.
The unit is designed with fully adjustable dim settings for the display
backlighting, panel lighting and annunciator lighting. It is shipped from the
factory with standard adjustments, which should be satisfactory for most
installations.

Page 2044
Revision 6 23-10-09 Nov/2007
N
KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

To change these settings from the factory presets, the following procedure
should be followed.

(This is typically a bench procedure only. It is recommended that J1-p be left

open in the aircraft installation.)

1. With the unit powered off, ground the ATE (FCDE) TEST IN pin (J1-p).

2. Turn the unit on. After a brief display of the software number and version
and a fault code display screen, rotate either knob in any direction and a dim
settings display shall be shown.

3. Rotating the appropriate knob, as described below, shall display the

corresponding information:

Large Knob:

• 'HI L' (high setting)

• ‘LO L’ (low setting for the LCD display lighting)
• 'F0 L' (for adjusting how bright the FBAZ LCD brightness is) *
• 'HI P' (high setting)
• ‘LO P’ (low setting for the panel lighting
• 'HI A' (high setting)
• ‘LO A’ (low setting for the annunciator lighting)
• 'F0 A' (for adjusting how bright the FBAZ annunciator brightness is) *
• ‘EP 0” (threshold voltage at which FBAZ switches on or off)*

Small Knob:

• Adjustment value from 0 - 100, 0 being OFF and 100 being full bright. EP
0 values range from 0-20. A value of 0 disables the FBAZ function.

NOTE: F0L, F0A and EP 0 show only for software releases 160 12 and
higher, found in PS 440s with Mod F and higher.

• The unit will following a semi-linear curve for each dimming bank (panel,
LCD backlighting and annunciator lighting) from the LO setting to the HI
setting. As mentioned, the full bright function shall apply to the
annunciator and LCD backlighting curves. Do not set the HI value for any
of the banks lower than the LO value.
• When the acceptable settings are dialed in, remove the ground from the
FCDE pin, returning the unit to normal operation. These settings are now
retained in non-volatile memory.
• The factory default settings are:

6.F. Antenna Installation

6.F.(1) Selecting an Antenna Configuration.

While numerous options are available in the choice of antenna configurations,

some configurations will be better suited for a particular installation than others.
Refer to Paragraph “5.B.(5) Antenna Location” when selecting an antenna
configuration.

6.F.(2) Bonding

Good electrical bonding of all antenna connections is required. Particularly

important is the bonding of the far end of the antenna in a grounded-antenna
configuration. If using the KHF 1050 Antenna Kit (P/N -71-01214-0002), the
ground plate associated with the 25ARM300-20E 30 feed-through termination
must be well bonded to the fuselage.

Similarly, good grounding is also required if using the 15ARM300-21 grounded

shackle. Additionally, it is important that the surface to which the antenna is
grounded be well bonded to the rest of the aircraft structure.

When using shunt antennas, such as described in Paragraph “5.B.(5)(i)

Leading Edge of Vertical Stabilizer Antenna Mounting Location” and
Paragraph “5.B.(5)(j) Shorted Tranline or Towel Bar Antenna Mounting
Location” , the importance of using low resistance conductors and ensuring that
all connections are well bonded is critical. Refer to Paragraph “6.A.(1) Antenna
Coupler Electrical Bonding Connections” for special electrical bonding
considerations when installing an antenna configuration.

7.B. System Checkout

7.B.(1) General

The KHF 1050 HF Communication System requires three stages of

post-installation testing to ensure proper operation: (1) A system interwiring
check is performed before installation of system components and before power
is applied, to verify that all aircraft and HF system interconnections are correct.
Continuity of power pins is double-checked. (2) After system components are
installed, a visual inspection of the equipment and connections is made. (3) The
post-installation test applies power to system components and checks out
system functions.

7.B.(2) System Interwiring Check

7.B.(2)(a) Check that all cables and interwiring are installed according to the
interwiring and cable fabrication instructions Paragraph “5.C. Interwiring

7.D. SWR and Power Measurement Procedures

The following information is provided as an aid, in the event transmitter problems

are encountered during post-installation testing.

A SWR/wattmeter can be connected between the KPA 1052 Output (J10527) and
the KAC 1052 Input (J10523) to check the RF output power and to verify the
Antenna Coupler is finding a good tune. J10527 should connect to the wattmeter
input and J10523 to the wattmeter output.

It is important to use a wattmeter that is capable of operating as either an

average-reading wattmeter or peak-reading type. Average-reading wattmeters will
not give accurate indications of transmitter power in the SSB modes. The
average-reading mode is preferred for some measurements, such as during
antenna coupler tuning.

To observe the power and SWR during the Antenna Coupler tuning process, set
the wattmeter to the average-reading mode. When the Antenna Coupler is tuning,
a forward power of 10 to 50 watts will typically be observed. During the tuning
process, both the SWR and RF power will vary. The tuning sequence will stop
when the antenna coupler finds an acceptable tune, or determines a tune cannot
be found.

Once the antenna coupler is tuned, a forward power of typically 200 Watts
Peak-Envelope-Power (PEP) will be observed on USB voice transmissions if the
controller is set to MAX power. It is important that the wattmeter be set to the
peak-reading mode for measurements utilizing voice modulation. 100 or 50 Watts
PEP will be observed if the controller power setting is MED or MIN respectively.
The SWR reading should be 2.5:1 or less. When transmitting in USB voice with no
one speaking into the microphone, the power should be near zero. Similar power
readings will be observed in LSB voice. If operating in Reduced Carrier (RC) mode,
similar readings will be observed, however significant output power will be read
with no modulation.

In AM mode, a carrier power of approximately 50 Watts will be observed with no

modulation, and 200 W PEP or slightly less with voice modulation. This power will
be observed regardless of the power setting on the controller. When using the data
modes, the power observed will be highly dependent on the type of modulation
used. The wattmeter’s peak-reading mode is typically used for measuring the
power with data modulation.

9. Maintenance Procedures

9.A. In-Aircraft Adjustments

9.A.(1) General

All alignment and adjustment procedures are accomplished during bench

maintenance. When unit performance indicates an adjustment or an alignment
is required a technician should remove the unit from the aircraft, then reference
should be made to the related Maintenance Manual.

9.A.(2) Audio Levels

The audio inputs and outputs of the KRX 1053 are factory adjusted to the
following levels:

• Receiver/Sidetone: 7.75 Vrms into 600 ohms at maximum volume

• Data Input: 0.775 Vrms across 600 ohms
• Microphone Input: 200 mVrms to 2 Vrms (typical) into 150 ohms
• Data Output: 0.775 Vrms into 600 ohms
• SELCAL Output: 0.775 Vrms into 600 ohms

If necessary, these levels may be adjusted for compatibility with other aircraft
systems. To access the adjustments, loosen the two Dzues fasteners on the top
of the unit and remove the dust cover. Refer to “Figure 2019 - KRX 1053
Adjustments” for adjustment locations on the KRX 1053. Replace and secure
the dust cover once the adjustment is complete.

9.B. System Protection

The KHF 1050 system is primarily protected by circuit breakers located at the
circuit breaker panel in the aircraft. The KPA 1052 and KRX 1053 contain internal
fuses for additional protection.

9.C. Lubrication

No lubrication is required. There are no moving parts that require lubrication in the
KHF 1050 HF Communication System.

9.D. Cleaning

Page 2054
Revision 6 23-10-09 Nov/2007
N
KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

The exterior of the units should be wiped with lint-free cloth dampened with the
approved cleaning agent, when deemed necessary, depending upon
environmental exposure and intensity of use.

NOTE: Limit cleaning of equipment interiors to that required at bench overhaul.

10. System Maintenance Programs

10.A. System Maintenance Recommendations

10.A.(1) General

Perform a system performance check when a component of the system is

replaced or installed.

To confirm satisfactory system operation a system performance test may be

performed as required.

After major aircraft maintenance cycles a system performance check should be

performed.

10.A.(2) KAC 1052 Pressurization

The RF matching networks in the KAC 1052 can develop RF voltages in excess
of 3000 volts with some antennas at a 200 W power level. Such high voltages
could cause arcing internal to the antenna coupler in high-altitude
environments. To prevent such arcing, the KAC 1052 is normally pressurized
with nitrogen.

On an annual basis, the pressure of the KAC 1052 should be measured at the
valve adjacent to J10522 using a precision gauge, by using the KAC 1052
Maintenance Program software or by using a voltmeter. If below 8 psig, add
nitrogen to bring the pressure up to 8 to 10 psig (55 - 69 kPa gauge). Reference
“Figure 2018 - KAC 1052 Pressurization Valve” .

To check the pressure in the Antenna Coupler using the Maintenance Program
software, connect the personal computer to the KAC 1052 as described in
“10.C.(5) Connection to a Personal Computer” . Access the ACP Maintenance
page. The internal pressure will be displayed in the upper right portion of the
screen. To measure the pressure again, click on Gauge Pressure.

To check the pressure in the Antenna coupler using a digital voltmeter, remove
the protective cover from P10522. Connect the positive (+) lead of the voltmeter
to P10522-7 and the negative lead (-) to P10522-4. A reading of 3.0 to 3.3 VDC
indicates that the pressure is between 8 to 10 psi.

Page 2055
Revision 6 23-10-09 Nov/2007
N
KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

Figure 2018 - KAC 1052 Pressurization Valve

If using the KHF 1050 Maintenance Program software, some variation in

indicated pressure from one reading to the next is normal. Averaging multiple
readings is recommended.

In the event that the pressure leaks to a point below approximately 4 psig (27
kPa gauge) or 2.5 VDC (voltmeter method) between annual maintenance
checks, more frequent monitoring of the pressure in that antenna coupler is
advisable. If the rapid pressure loss persists, service on the coupler is
suggested to check for leaks.

NOTE: Pressure readings by any of the recommended methods can differ by

up to 3 psig (21 kPa) due to the effects of temperature and barometric
pressure at the time the readings are taken. Averaged multiple
readings from the Maintenance Program software is the most accurate
method for determining the pressure of the KAC 1052.

10.A.(3) KAC 1052 Pressure Warnings

In the event the pressure drops significantly below the normal value, a Label
351 Coupler-Pressure-Warning bit is set so that it can be used to advise the
pilot that the KAC 1052 should be serviced soon (typically repressurized). For
example, with a PS440 controller "PRS W" appears on the display when bit 15
is set (and bit 28 is zero). During the Coupler Pressure Warning the KHF 1050
system will continue to operate normally. A Pressure Warning indicates that the
antenna coupler may be approaching a Pressure Fault condition.

Page 2056
Revision 6 23-10-09 Nov/2007
N
KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

10.A.(4) KAC 1052 Pressure Faults

In the event the pressure drops to a level where there is a risk of arcing inside
the antenna coupler, both bits 15 and 28 of Label 351 are set. This can be used
to indicate to the pilot that a Coupler-Pressure-Failure condition exists. With a
PS440 controller, "PRS F" appears on the display when both bits 15 and 28 are
set. During the Coupler Pressure Fault, the KHF 1050 system will automatically
reduce the transmitter power to 50W PEP, regardless of the transmit power
selected by the pilot. This reduced power will in turn reduce the RF voltages
seen inside the antenna coupler. The low-power condition will be reflected in
transmitter power bits 22 and 23 of Label 037, Word 1, output by the KRX 1053
being set to 00B (MIN Power) as long the Coupler Pressure Warning exists. As
a practical matter, the inside of the antenna coupler would have to experience
an altitude typically above 5k ft MSL to issue a Pressure Fault.

10.C.(1) General

Page 2059
Revision 6 23-10-09 Nov/2007
N
KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

The KHF 1050 Maintenance Program software (PN 222-30144-0000) is

available as a tool to assist the installer and maintenance shop personnel. This
program installs on a personal computer (PC) and is intended to serve several
functions:

• As an aid in setting up installation-related setup parameters in the KRX 1053

Receiver/Exciter. The Maintenance Program information contained in this
manual primarily deals with this aspect of the software.
• For evaluating the contents of the fault memories in the KRX 1053 and KAC
1052 units.
• For checking the revision level of the software in the KAC 1052 or KRX
1053.
• To measure the pressure in the KAC 1052 Antenna Coupler.
• Allows the tune memories in the KAC 1052 to be cleared.

10.C.(2) Installation Setup Parameters

Four software adjustable parameters of the KRX 1053 are available for setup
by the installer:

• Stuck MIC Time

• Beep Control
• Sidetone Level
• Squelch Type
More complete information on these setup parameters are described in
Paragraph “10.C.(6) Installation Setup” . To utilize these setup parameters, the
PC must be connected to the KRX 1053.

10.C.(3) BITE Information

The maintenance data collection features of the KHF 1050 System include the
following three types of Built In Test (BITE) monitoring:

• Power-On
• Pilot-Initiated
• Continuous Monitoring
Various parameters are monitored with each of the above BITE types. When
failures are detected, these failures are stored in a fault memory and can be
retrieved for maintenance purposes. Refer to the HELP files associated with the
KHF 1050 Maintenance Program for more information.

Additionally, if the KAC 1052 fails to tune the antenna at a particular frequency,
information regarding the tune fault is available in the KAC 1052’s BITE
memory.

10.C.(4) Checking the Software Revision Level and Antenna Coupler Pressure

The Maintenance Program software can be used to check the pressure in the
antenna coupler, which is measured on an annual basis. Also, the revision
levels of the software in the KRX 1053 and KAC 1052 can be verified by this
Maintenance Program.

10.C.(5) Connection to a Personal Computer

Using a personal computer with an RS-232 port, a connection can be made to

the KAC 1052 Antenna Coupler to access the maintenance information of the
KAC 1052. Or, a connection can be made to the KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter to
monitor maintenance information, or to adjust certain setup parameters. The
KPA 1052 Power Amplifier does not have provisions for RS-232 interface.
Faults generated in the KPA 1052 are recorded in the KAC 1052.

Connection to the KRX 1053 Receiver/Exciter's RS232 pins (J10531, pins 33

and 75) is made through an installation-provided connector that can be built into
the aircraft harness or test-bench harness. Honeywell recommends that a
033-00230-0000 connector be installed in the aircraft harness or test bench
harness, and that a 155-02794-0001 cable assembly be used between the KRX
1053 and the PC. It is important to note that, when operating the KRX 1053 with
the Maintenance Program software, pin 78 on the KRX 1053 connector J10531
must be grounded. It must then be ungrounded for normal radio operation. The
155-02794-0001 cable assembly provides this grounding function. This same
cable can be used for updating the software in the KRX 1053, and for reading
fault information stored in the Receiver/Exciter. See “Figure 1002 - PC Data
Cable Connections”

The connection between the PC and the KAC 1052 Antenna Coupler's TEST
connector (J10522) can be made with a null-modem cable (9-pin female to
9-pin female). This cable would be used for reading the fault information stored
in the KAC 1052. Additionally, this same cable can be used for updating the
software in the KAC 1052, if required.

Com Port Select: The Maintenance Program can operate off either serial com
ports of a personal computer, or off the USB ports if using a USB-Serial
adapter. The default port is Com 1. The RS-232 parameters are fixed by the
program so as to be compatible with the KHF 1050 system.

10.C.(6) Installation Setup

(RX/EX Defaults Setup Variables)

Page 2061
Revision 6 23-10-09 Nov/2007
N
KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

The installer has the ability to adjust the following four parameters via the
Maintenance Program by accessing the using the RX/EX Maintenance page.
To make adjustments, click on Read Defaults to determine the present default
settings. It is advisable to write these values down so that you can return to
them if necessary. Adjustments are then made by using the up or down control
arrows to the right of the value window. Finally, clicking on Set Defaults records
the new values in the KRX 1053.

Stuck Mic Time: If the stuck mic protection feature is activated by grounding pin
36 of KRX 1053 connector J10531, this will control how many seconds the mic
can be continuously keyed before the transmitter turns itself off. Range: 30 to
240 seconds. The factory default is 120 seconds.

Beep Control: Controls the function of the antenna-coupler tune-tone and

associated tune-fault audio indication. Factory setting: 3.

If set to zero, no tune tone is heard in the headphones (or speaker); the pilot
has to rely on a visual indication on the HF controller for indication of a
tune-in-progress or of a tune-failure of the KAC 1052.

When Beep Control is set to a value of 1 to 99, a constant tone will be heard in
the headphones (or speaker) while the KAC 1052 is attempting to tune the
antenna. The tone will disappear when a successful tune is found. In the event
a tune fault is encountered, the tone will become intermittent and beep at about
a 1-second repetition rate. The number of beeps that are heard before they turn
themselves off is set by this Beep Count value. The pilot can terminate the
tune-fault beeping at any time by simply pressing the PTT or changing the
frequency, regardless of the Beep-Count setting. If the tune-fault beeping is
terminated by the beep-count time-out, the pilot will continue to receive a visual
tune-fault indication on the controller, assuming the controller provides for such
a tune-fault indication.

Sidetone Level: This sets the level of the sidetone heard in the headphones (or
speaker), relative to the level of a received signal. This adjustment affects the
level of both the antenna-coupler tune-tone (if activated) and the microphone
sidetone. A value of 255 (factory setting) sets the sidetone level at
approximately the same level as that of the received signal. Some pilots may
prefer a lower setting of approximately 128 (-6dB), rather than the factory
setting of 255.

Squelch Type: The KHF 1050 System offers four types of squelch. If using a
controller that does not allow for the selection of the squelch type (i.e. does not
send ARINC 429 word 0), the squelch type established by this setting will
determine the squelch used by the KRX 1053 receiver. For example, the
Honeywell RM-855 RMU does not allow for the selection of the squelch type.
SBH is a syllabic squelch that is generally preferred for voice communications
and is the factory default setting. Other selections are SBL, SQL and SQH.

SBH - (Syllabic Squelch High). This is the default squelch and is usually best
for normal voice communications. A syllabic squelch opens upon receiving a
signal with voice-like characteristics while ignoring other signals. With syllabic
squelch, there is the possibility that the first syllable of a voice reception may be
partially squelched. The possible adjustment levels are open, meaning no
squelch action (OPN), minimum (MIN), medium (MED) and maximum (MAX).

SBL - (Syllabic Squelch Low). This squelch is also a syllabic squelch and is
intended for voice communications where the desired signal is very weak and
noisy. This squelch is more prone to opening on noise than the SBH squelch.
The possible adjustment levels are open (OPN), minimum (MIN), medium
(MED) and maximum (MAX).

SQH - (Signal/Noise Squelch High). This is a traditional signal-to-noise squelch

best suited for listening to non-voice signals, or voice signals that do not
respond well to one of the syllabic squelches. Compared to the syllabic
squelches, a higher signal level is generally required for this squelch to perform
well. The possible adjustment levels are 1-32, where 1 is open squelch.
SQL - (Signal Level Squelch). This is a signal strength squelch which opens on
any strong input signal. It opens quickly on strong signals, but also opens on
strong noise or static. Use of SQL is recommended for use only with strong
signals and under low noise conditions.
10.C.(7.) Clearing the KAC 1052 tuning-network memories.

Page 2063
Revision 6 23-10-09 Nov/2007
N
KHF 1050 SYSTEM INSTALLATION MANUAL

The KAC 1052 stores the tuning-network information for each frequency it has
previously tuned. This allow for almost instantaneous antenna tuning when
returning to a previously tuned frequency. If a change is made to the aircraft's
antenna configuration, or if the KAC 1052 is transferred into a different aircraft,
it is advisable to erase the stored tuning information so the antenna coupler can
find a "fresh" tune for the antenna. This will generally provide for the selection
of the most efficient tuning network.

The tuning information can be cleared using the Maintenance Program. To

clear the tuning information in the KAC 1052, connect the personal computer to
the KAC 1052 as described in “10.C.(5) Connection to a Personal Computer” .
1. Access the ACP Maintenance page.
2. Click on "Clear Tuning Data",
3. Click "Yes" in the first dialog box
4. Click "OK" in the second dialog box.
5. Allow about 3 minutes for the clearing process to complete. Take care not
to let the DC power to the unit be interrupted during the clearing process.
6. At the completion of the clearing process click "OK" in the
Coupler-Clear-Complete dialog box.
7. Turn off the DC power to the KHF 1050 system. When DC power is
reapplied, the tuning memory will be cleared.
8. The KAC 1050 will now find a new tune for each operating frequency
selected.
