General information
What is Plug & Charge?
Plug & Charge is a functionality of the charging station. The user doesn’t have to scan his/her card anymore
to start the charging session. This can be used if the charging station is used only by the owner. When the
user gets to their charging station, plug in your vehicle and immediately start charging.

Do I still need a charge card?

For charging, you don’t need a charge card anymore. However, you need to register your charge card at
the beginning. You can do this via ICU Connect.

Can I use more than 1 card for Plug & Charge?

No, you can only register one charge card for Plug & Charge. The card number will be saved in the
charger and every charging session will be charged to this card number.

How do I start charging with Plug & Charge?

You just have to put the cable in the charging station. When the cable is connected to the charging station
and the car, the charging station recognizes the cable and will start the charging session. When the cable
is only connected to the charging station, the charging station won’t start the charging session. When you
have a charging station with a fixed cable, you just need to connect the cable to the charging station.

How do I stop charging with Plug & Charge?

You can stop the charging session by unplugging the cable from the car. When you have a charging
station with a socket, the cable will also disconnect when you unplug the cable of the car

What kind of charging station do I have?

The main difference is whether the charging station is connected to a back office. If the charging station
isn’t connected to a back office, it’s a stand-alone charging station. When it’s a stand-alone charging
station, you can only configure it via ICU Service Installer.

1 Which configuration do you use?
There are three different ways to configure Plug & Charge for a charging station. If it’s a stand-alone
charging station or not connected to the ICU back office, this will be the only way of configuration. You can
only configure it via ICU Service Installer because it’s not connected to a back office. If the charging station
is connected to a back office, you can configure the whole Plug & Charge system via ICU Connect. Every
charging station which is connected to a back office, should be registered as Plug & Charge in that back
office.

2. Charging station with connection to back office:

If you don’t have access to the ICU Service Installer, download the ICU Service installer at
http://alfen.com/downloads. For credentials, go to http://support.alfen.com, go to the configuration tool and
create a ticket via request for sign up.

2 P&C configuration ICU Service Installer
This is the only way to configure a stand-alone charging station. If you’re configuring a charging station that
is connected to a back office, this could be the first step. It’s important to also perform step two then.

The following chapter explains how the charging point can be configured using the ICU Service Installer.

2.1 Step 1: Go to ICU Service Installer

Go to the charging station in ICU Service Installer.

20180216 008
2.4 Step 4: Fill in Plug/Charge ID
Fill in the “Plug/Charge ID”. The Plug/Charge ID is the (virtual) card to which all charging sessions will be
charged. It’s important to get the right Plug/Charger ID, otherwise the charging station won’t recognize a
valid (virtual) card and won’t start charging.

In this case, the order number of the charging station is 57186r004.

The Plug/Charge ID must be 8 characters and hexadecimal. To

use the ordernumber we you have to remove the “R” (not
hexademical) and add a character: the “A” at the front.

So the Plug/Charge ID is: A57186004. By using this procedure an A number is always recognizable as a
Plug/Charge ID in ICU Connect.
