Place the machine on a level ground, set the
gear shift lever to P position, and chock the
tires.
Check this item under the following conditions.
Coolant temperature: Normal temperature

Testing method
1. Disconnect breather tube (1) and blowby tube
(2), and remove cylinder head cover (3). For
details, see Disassembly and assembly,
"Removal and installation of cylinder head
assembly".

2) Remove cap (5), insert gear E1 and rotate it

to the normal direction.
By rotating gear E1 counterclockwise, the
crankshaft can be rotated to the normal
2. Remove cap (4) of the gear cover. direction.

3. Set the No. 1 cylinder to the compression top 3) Align TDC stamp line (a) of gear cover (7)

Testing and adjusting valve clearance

At the compression top dead center, the

rocker arm of No.1 cylinder can be moved
by valve clearance with hands. If the rock-
er arm does not move, cylinder is not at
the compression top dead center, so ro-
tate the gear further 1 turn.
Since the gear ratio between the supply
pump gear and crank gear is 2 : 1, 1/2
turn of the supply pump gear corresponds
to 1 turn of the crank gear.

6. After finishing the measurement, remove the

testing tools, and restore the machine.
Be sure to remove gear E1.
Replace gasket of head cover with a new
one.

4. While No. 1 cylinder is at the compression top

dead center, check the valve clearance marked
with in the following figure with feeler gauge
E2.
5. Rotate the crankshaft in the normal direction by
1 turn and check the valve clearance of the
remaining valves marked with .
You may check the valve clearance of No. 1
cylinder while No. 1 cylinder is at the com-
pression top dead center and then turn the
crankshaft in the normal direction by 120
deg. and check the valve clearance of each
cylinder in the firing order.
The valve clearance is correct when it is with-
in the standard value range. For the standard
values, see "Standard value table for en-
gine".
If you can move the rocker arm of air intake
valves (IN) with the hand by the valve clear-
ance amount, check the valves with mark
in the valve arrangement drawing.
If you can move the rocker arm of air exhaust
valves (EX) with the hand by the valve clear-
ance amount, check the valves with mark
in the valve arrangement drawing.
Firing order: 1-5-3-6-2-4

Adjusting
After testing, adjust the valve clearance according
to the following procedure, if necessary.
1. Loosen lock nut (9) with adjustment screw (8)
fixed.
2. Insert feeler gauge E2 in the clearance between
rocker arm (10) and crosshead (11) and adjust
the valve clearance with adjustment screw (8).
With feeler gauge E2 inserted, turn the ad-
justment screw (8) and adjust it (8) until the
feeler gauge E2 can move lightly.
For the valve clearance, see "Standard value
table for engine".
3. Tighten lock nut (9) with adjustment screw (8)
fixed.
Lock nut (9):
24 ± 4 Nm {2.45 ± 0.41 kgm}
After tightening lock nut (9), check the valve
clearance again.

4. After finishing the adjustment, remove the

testing tools, and restore the machine.
