BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Performing measuring and calculation in computing comes with understanding

the digital unit conversion measurements that helps you interpret the sizes of
storage devices optimally and efficiently. You also need to be familiar with the
basic language of digital units to better recognize the storage limits and capacity.

A computer works by combining input, storage, processing, and output. All the main
parts of a computer system are involved in one of these four processes.

The process begins when you boot your computer and enter
a command from your keyboard, mouse and other input
devices. The CPU interprets the command and instructs the
hard drive to load the command or program into the memory
and instructs the hard drive to load the command or program
into the memory. Once the data is loaded into the memory,
the CPU is able to access it quickly to retrieve it from the hard
drive and provide results in the output devices like printer or
monitor.
https://homepage.cs.uri.edu/faculty/wolfe/book/images/R04/mb.gi

The components that can be measured in a computer system are CPU, memory and storage
devices. The speed of the CPU tells you how much data it can process in a specific time. The
speed is measured in gigahertz (GHz) while memory/storage devices are any type of hardware
that is capable of storing and retrieving data.

Computer memory / storage can be classified in three ways; primary, secondary and off-line.

Primary
Primary memory is the computer’s main memory, which is directly
accessible by the CPU and often much faster than secondary
storage.

RAM will hold the loaded operating system, plus all running
applications and files.

Examples of primary memory / storage:

• Random Access Memory (RAM) – solid state
• Read Only Memory (ROM) – solid state

Secondary
Secondary storage is a non-volatile medium that holds data until it is deleted or overwritten.
It is sometimes referred to as external memory and auxiliary storage. Secondary storage is
where programs and data are kept on a long-term basis.
Examples of secondary memory / storage:
• Hard Disk Drive (HDD) – magnetic storage

5
• Solid State Drive (SSD) – solid state
Off-line
Off-line refers to non-volatile storage that can be easily removed from the computer. This is
often used to transport data and keep backups for protection.
Examples of off-line memory / storage:
• CD, DVD, Blu-ray – optical storage
• USB Flash Drive – solid state
• Removable HDD / SSD

When choosing a memory/storage device we come across to the terms “1 TB hard drive””
or “4GB of RAM”. Identifying the storage capacity is essential in understanding data in a
computer. These is represented in a series of bits (binary digits) or ones and zeroes which
can be measured by converting binary data into decimal data and calculating the capacity of
components.

Memory/Storage Method Capacity

ROM Solid State 4 to 8 MB
RAM Solid State 1 to 256 GB
Hard Disk Magnetic up to 1 TB
CD Optical 640 MB to 680 MB
DVD Optical 4.7 GB to 17 GB
Blu-ray Optical up to 25GB (single-layer disc) /up to 50 GB (dual-
layer disc )
USB Flash Drive / Pen-Drive Solid State 512 to 2 TB
Hard Disk Magnetic up to 16 TB
Solid State Drive Solid State up to 16 TB

Electronics/Measuring Instruments
One of the most electronic/measuring instrument used in computer components is the
multimeter most especially when troubleshooting the component and analyzing computer
circuits. These instruments are available in both analog and digital readout form and can be
used to directly measure electrical values of voltage (V), current in milliamperes (mA) or
amperes (A), and resistance in ohms. Therefore, these devices are referred to as VOMs (volt-
ohm-milliammeters) for analog types, or DMMs (digital multimeters) for digital types.

To properly maintain the measuring instrument, you must consider the following:
1. Proper handling of measuring instruments
2. Cleaning the instrument before and after using
3. Proper storage of instruments is carried according to the manufacturer’s specifications
and standard operating procedures.

Carryout Measurements and Calculation

A modern digital computer represents data using the binary numeral system. Text,
numbers, pictures, audio, and nearly any other form of information can be converted into a
string of bits, or binary digits, each of which has a value of 1 or 0.
• A Bit is a single binary value that may be 1 or 0 (on or off)

6
• A Nibble is a group of 4 bits.
• A Byte is a group of 8 bits and is equal to one character.
1 byte = 8 bits (e.g. 10011011)

A piece of information can be handled by any computer or device whose storage space
is large enough to accommodate the binary representation of the piece of information, or
simply data. The measurement of how much data can be stored in a storage device is called
The data storage capacity.

Example: if you have flash drive with 32GB storage capacity, what will be the
equivalent in MB.
1 GB = 1,000 MB
Convert 32 GB to MB = 32 GB = 32 x 1000MB = 32000 MB

Convert Binary to Decimal

Conversion of binary to decimal (base-2 to base-10) numbers and back is an important
concept to understand as the binary numbering system forms the basis for all computer and
digital systems.
Binary Digits (base-2)
27 26 25 24 23 22 21 20
128 64 32 16 8 4 2 1

Example: Convert the binary number 00011101 to decimal

1. Write down the binary number and list the powers of 2 from right to left.
128 64 32 16 8 4 2 1
2. Write the digits of the binary number below their corresponding powers of two.
128 64 32 16 8 4 2 1
0 0 0 1 1 1 0 1
3. Write down the final value of each power of two, then add the final values
128 64 32 16 8 4 2 1
0 0 0 1 1 1 0 1
0 0 0 16 8 4 0 1
16 + 8 + 4 + 1 = 29

7
4. Write the final answer: 00011101 = 29

Convert Decimal to Binary

The number system that we use in our day-to-day life is the decimal number system. Decimal
number system has base 10 as it uses 10 digits from 0 to 9. In decimal number system, the
successive positions to the left of the decimal point represent units, tens, hundreds, thousands
and so on.

Example: Convert decimal 534 to binary

1. Write the decimal number as the dividend inside an upside-down "long division" symbol.
2 534
2. Divide. Write the integer answer (quotient) under the long division symbol, and write the
remainder (0 or 1) to the right of the dividend.

Quotient Remainder
2 534 = 267 0
267 = 133 1
133 = 66 1
66 = 33 0
33 = 16 1
16 = 8 0
8 = 4 0
4 = 2 0
2 = 1 0
1 = 0 1

3. Write out the equivalent binary number. Starting with the bottom remainder, read the
sequence of remainders upwards to the top.
534 = 1000010110

Checking: Convert binary to decimal

512 256 128 64 32 16 8 4 2 1
1 0 0 0 0 1 0 1 1 0
512 0 0 0 0 16 0 4 2 0
512 + 16 + 4 + 2 = 534

BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Technical drawing is an essential tool for young people learning about

technology and communicating ideas in industry and engineering. For us to easily
understand technical drawing we must be familiar with symbols, perspectives,
units of measurement, notation systems, visual styles and instrument needed in
measuring and interpreting drawings.

Technical drawings are graphic and technical communication tools that is used by person
who works with technology like engineers, architects, designers, technologists, technicians
and specialized workers.

There are many types of technical drawings, including:

• 3D drawings (isometric, perspective)
• Exploded-view 3D drawings
• Complete working drawings
• Detail drawings (2D orthogonal projections)
•Diagrams are another form of technical drawing with looser, less universal standards.

12
In computer, diagrams like flowcharts is used. This can provide a step-by-step diagram
for mapping out complex situations, such as programming code or troubleshooting problems
with a computer.

One of the most popular computer program you can use to design and create flowcharts
and diagrams is the Microsoft Visio.

Below is an example of a basic flowchart for troubleshooting computer issues. This can be
followed systematically to help determine the cause of computer problem.

Flowcharts can also be created for any of the situations below.

represents an individual step or activity in
Process the process (an instruction or command)
Rectangle
shows a decision point, such as yes/no or
go/no-go. Each path emerging from the
Decision diamond must be labeled with one of the
possible answers.
Diamond
Connects the symbols. The arrow shows
the direction of flow of instructions.
Flowline

Pairs of on-page connecter are used to

On-page replace long lines on a flowchart page. A
Connector letter placed in the circle clarifies the
continuation.
Circle
An off-page connector is used when the
Off-page target is on another page. A letter placed
Connector in the circle clarifies the continuation.

14
Aside from flowchart there is what we call schematic diagram which is use to represents the
components of a process, device, or other object using abstract, often standardized symbols
and lines. Although schematic diagrams are commonly associated with electrical circuits,
many examples can be found in other industries. In computer, block diagram is also used. It
is It is a diagram showing in schematic form the general arrangement of the parts or
components of a complex system or process.
