Introduction
This book has been compiled with the intention of facilitating teachers to align the textbook and
the teacher guide to complete the competency levels to be covered within the first term.

Due to Covid-19 pandemic learning has been shifted from classroom to home. Therefore it is a
quite challenging task to the teachers to cover the syllabus in distant mode. Thus this book
will help teachers to use as a supplementary material in distant learning. Further , this book can
be used as a self-study material for the students who do not have facilities to access e-learning.

Please note that the suggested activities included in this material can be adapted according to
the standards of the students.

Apostrophe
1. We use an apostrophe to show the omission of a letter. ( contraction)
A contraction is a shortened form of two words written as one word and
an apostrophe („) takes the place of the missing letter or letters.

Lesson Four
Competency Level - 4.5 Forms the plurals of nouns
Introduction
Plural nouns

 A noun that names more than one person, animal, place or thing is called plural noun.
 A plural of noun is usually formed by adding -s to singular noun.
Eg:- dog dogs book books

Nouns ending in o/ s /x /sh /ch/ ss formed the plural by adding - es .

Eg : - bus - buses
boss - bosses
fox – foxes
dish - dishes
ostrich - ostriches

Nouns ending in -y proceed by a consonant is formed into a plural by changing -y into -ies

Eg :- city - cities
country -countries

Nouns ending in -y proceed by a vowel formed their plurals by adding -s


Eg :- boy - boys
key – keys

Some nouns ending in -f or-fe are made plural by changing -f or -fe to -ves

Eg :- knife -knives

We write instructions to explain how to make or do something.

Remember to:
- write instructions in present tense.
- use imperative verbs to write each step( add / put).
- use time words ( first / then /next).
- use adverbs when necessary ( add flour gradually / stir well ).

Lesson Six

Competency Level – 6.2 -Uses pronouns appropriately

Pronouns
A pronoun is a word that replaces a noun in a sentence.

Examples:

Gihani‟s bag is heavy. Mother is cooking Amal and Bimal are cleaning the classroom.
Her bag is heavy. She is cooking. They are cleaning the classroom

They, Her, She are pronouns here. There are different kinds of pronouns. They are subject pronoun, object
pronoun and possessive pronoun.
In this lesson, we will learn about possessive pronouns.
What are possessive pronouns?
Possessive pronouns show that something belongs to someone. It simply gives the idea of ownership.
Examples:

It is my cap. It is our company. It is his car.


This cap is mine. The company is ours. The car is his.

 my, our, his, her, its, their and your are called possessive adjectives. They usually come before a
noun.

 mine, ours, his, hers, theirs and yours are called possessive pronouns. They are used instead of a
noun.

Poison Dart Frog

If you were a meat- eating jungle animal looking for a tasty snack, there is one you'd want to avoid
eating at all coasts- the poison dart frog!
Most poison dart frog species live in Central and South America. They came in a variety of bright
colours. Including yellow, gold , blue , red, green , copper and black. Their colours warn potential
predators to watch out!These frogs don‟t bite. They don‟t even have teeth.
Unlike most frogs, poison dart frogs are active during the day. Adult poison dart frogs do not live in
water instead, they live in the leaf litter and rocks of their rain forest habitat. A few species also live
high in the trees.
Like all frogs ,poison dart frogs start out as tadpoles and spend their early stages of development
in the water.
Adult dart frogs have long sticky tongues. Their tongues zip out quickly to catch the food they eat;
spiders, and small insects like flies, termites, ants, and centipedes.

Adjectives
Adjective is a word that describes noun or pronoun. There are three types of adjectives. They are positive,
comparative and superlative.

 Positive adjectives do not compare people, things or places.


eg. tall boy, huge tree, important place
In this lesson, we will learn about comparative adjectives.
Comparative adjectives.
We use comparative adjectives to compare two people, things or places.

eg. 1. tall taller eg.2. large larger

Hashan Ruvan
hippopotamus elephant
 Ruvan is taller than Hashan.
 Elephant is larger than hippopotamus.

 Let‟s see how comparative adjectives are formed.

Rule Adjective Comparative


1. For short adjectives add –er tall taller
2.If the last letter is „e‟ add only –r close closer
3.For the adjectives ending with „y‟, drop –y and add -ier healthy healthier

4. Short adjectives with CVC ( consonant +vowel+ consonant) big bigger


pattern , double the last letter and add -er
5.For long adjectives, add „more‟ before the adjective . beautiful more beautiful
6.Irregular adjectives form comparatives in different ways. bad worse

 We use comparative adjectives to compare two people, things or places.
In this lesson, we will learn about superlative adjectives.

Superlative adjectives
We use superlative adjectives to compare one person, place or thing in a group ( more than two)

Black pencil is the shortest pencil. Yellow bag is the biggest bag.

Let‟s learn how we can make the superlative forms.

Rule Positive Comparative Superlative

1.For short adjectives we add–est to the tall taller tallest

2.We add -st when the adjective ends with „e‟ close closer closest
