company and some excitement.

He rushed down towards the village calling out "Wolf, Wolf," and the villagers came out to meet

villagers came to his help.

But shortly after this, a wolf actually did come out from the forest, and began to worry the
sheep, and the boy of course cried out "Wolf, Wolf," still louder than before.

deceiving them, and nobody stirred to come to his help.

not right. They needed someone to rule them.

So, they went up to Jupiter, the king of all gods, and pleaded, “O mighty Jupiter, send us a
king that would rule over us and maintain order in our swamp!” Jupiter laughed at their
croaking and devised a plan to teach them a lesson. He threw a huge log into the swamp, which
landed with a big splash.

The frogs were frightened at first and all of them rushed to the bank and looked at the log.
They waited for some time for the log to speak to them, but the log did not move.

“Who is this?” one of them asked.

“He’s our king!” said the elders.

The Ant and the Grasshopper

One summer afternoon a Grasshopper was hopping about in a field. He was singing
merrily and enjoying the day. On his way, he met an Ant who was struggling to take a grain of
corn to his nest.

The Grasshopper was a lazy fellow. He thought he had nothing to do. So, when he saw the
Ant, he said, “Why don’t you come and chat with me instead of toiling so hard? We will have a
great time!”

“I am trying to collect and store food for the winter. I can’t waste time being idle. I think
you should start saving food for winter too” said the Ant.

The Grasshopper yawned and said, “Winter is too far away. There is plenty of time. Why
do you worry about it today when I have more than enough to eat!” but the Ant went on his way
and continued to work hard. Days passed, then months. The Grasshopper enjoyed himself and
the Ant collected enough food for the winter.

When the winter came, the leaves had fallen and the grass was dry. The Grasshopper had
nothing to eat. It started to snow and he had nowhere to go. He thought he would die of hunger
and cold. On the other hand, the Ant was enjoying the fruits of his hard work. He had a nice and

Lesson Fourteen
Competency level: 7.3 Writes for personal purposes

Personal Letter Writing

Introduction

Letter writing is fun.

❖ Have you ever received a personal letter?

❖ How did you feel as you read the letter?
❖ Did you write back?

There are two types of letters: formal and informal (personal/friendly).

• A personal letter is longer than a note.

• It is not limited to a specific message.
• Good personal letter writing feels much like a good conversation.
• When writing a personal letter, you can afford it to be friendly and make use of
personal/ emotional tone.

Personal letter format

• There are fewer formatting rules for personal letters than there are for formal letters.
• So, there is no set format for personal letters.
• But, there is a general pattern that we usually follow.

Look at the parts of a personal letter .

There are five main parts of a personal letter.

1. The Heading: the heading can include your address and the date. If the recipient
of the letter is in another country do not forget to write your country as well. In
casual, friendly letters your address is not necessary.

2. The Salutation (Greeting) : Since you know the person you are writing to, the
greeting can be informal too.

eg. 1) Dear
* If he/ she is a close friend, you can greet them by their first name. - Dear
Supipi,
*If you are writing to your relatives ( your mother, father, aunt, uncle,
grandmother etc.), - Dear mother,
*If you are writing to an elder person, someone you respect, like yor teacher, you
can address them as Mr. or Mrs. - Dear Mrs. Pavithra,
2) Hi/ Hello
These are less formal than using Dear - Hi Ranga,

3. Body : This can be of three parts.

40
GRADE NINE-SECOND TERM_STUDY PACK

1) Introductory paragraph – This sets the tone for the whole letter. It should
be casual and comforting. You can begin the letter by
✓ asking the recipient about their well being.
✓ saying that you hope the letter finds them in good health and great
spirits.
eg. Thanks for your letter.
Lovely to hear from you.
How are you?
Hpe you are well.

2) Body of the letter – State the main reason to write the letter.
✓ You have to adjust the language and the wordings according to who
you are writing to.
eg. With a friend you can be very casual.
But with an elder relative , you must be respectful and
considerate.

3) Conclusive paragraph – Conclusion and end of the letter

✓ Say an affectionate good bye to the reader. Do not forget to invite
the reader to reply to your letter.
eg. Well, that’s all for now.
Write back soon.
Loking forward to hearing from you again.
See you soon.

4. Closing : There are different ways to sign off informal letters.

eg. Lots of love,
Best,
Best wishes,
Regard,
Kind regards,
Kindly,

5. Signature : Your name
