This happened last week. My father made all arrangements to take us on a holiday to a beach resort. We
set out on a Saturday morning to Arugam Bay. There were four of us in the car; father, mother, sister, and
myself. After visiting a few other important places on the way we reached Pottuvil around five o’clock
in the evening. We had another 4 kilometers to go. When we were passing through Lahugala National
Park, father told us to be watchful as we would be able to see some wild animals. My sister and I were
much excited as we had not seen wild animals in their natural habitat before.

As we entered the park we got the feeling that we had entered a different world. We
heard only the cries of birds, monkeys and gnats. Father pointed to a herd of deer gazing on an open land
unruffled. He stopped the car and took some pictures of the deer. We were very happy and thrilled.

STUDY PACK-GRADE 10-TIRD TERM 12

Some wild boars ran across the road. They would have been disturbed by the sound of the car. When we
were half way through the park we were swerved and began to bump. Father took the car to a side of the
road and stopped. We were all agape. Father got off the car and went round looking at the wheels. ‘A flat
tyre’ he said. I thought that we got a good chance to see more of the forest. Sister and I got down the
vehicle and walked few yards into the jungle. Suddenly we heard the trumpeting of an elephant. We ran
back and got into the vehicle. We waited like mice making no stir. Another loud cry of an elephant! A
herd of elephants began to cross the road. A big elephant stood guard while the others crossed the road.
They took their own time and leisurely crossed the road.

Sister clung to mother through fear and excitement. Father pressed me on to him. The last elephant
crossed the road and walked into the thick jungle. Only the big elephant who was keeping guard was left
on the road now. I closed my eyes and waited. The elephant gave one last trumpet call. I half opened my
eyes to see what was happening. And he was walking at a good pace into the forest. We heard the
breaking of branches. Mother made a sigh of relief, sister looked round with wide open eyes. Father and
I fixed the spare wheel and soon we were back on the road.

1) Who made the arrangements for the trip?________________________________________________

2) What was their destination?____________________________________________
3) What was the distance from Potuvil to Arugam Bay?________________________
4) How many were in the vehicle?__________________________________________
5) What was their father’s advice as they entered the park?_______________________
6) Did the deer run away when they saw the car?_______________________________
7) Why did the car stop?__________________________________________________
8) What did the speaker and his sister do while father changed the wheel?___________
_______________________________________________________________________
9) Why did they run back to the car?_________________________________________
10) Who crossed their path for the last time?____________________________________
