PART 1: READING SKILLS

Read the letter. Then use the information to complete the activities that follow.

Only and Lonely

Dear Editor:
1 An article in your last issue said that more parents should have only one child,
but I disagree. I think that they should have as many children as possible.
Children should grow up and learn with other children around them. Kids will be
happier because of it!
2 I am an only child who grew up without any siblings. You may think it is a
stereotype to feel lonely, but I really did. I always expected a little brother or
sister to be born, but it never happened. All of my friends at school had siblings.

They were spoiled because they always had someone to play with. I always felt
like I didn’t belong whenever I spent time with their families.
3 Now I am 40 years old, and I am the mother of three boys. Raising three kids
is a challenge, but there are a lot of adults in my family who help. Sometimes
my
neighbors even help me. I have strict rules in the house, but the boys always find
a way to misbehave. My middle child is the biggest troublemaker of them all!
4 I believe my boys are happier because they have each other and always will.
Children are more likely to have fun and enjoy their childhood with
siblings.
Sincerely,
Carrie Kline
